I was there the first time around, for "The River" tour at the Sports Arena, back in '81, I went with my friend Robin who liked me and had huge boobs but who I just couldn't touch.
I'd just stopped living with my live-in girlfriend.
And I coped by going to UCLA Extension, where I found other people as dedicated to rock and roll as I was. I was free, but at loose ends. Robin and I drove downtown after midnight to the Original Pantry and we got up at the crack of dawn to line up for Springsteen tickets at Tower Records in Westwood.
We thought we got good ones. We bought multiple nights. We couldn't sell the others, we went twice...the first experience was better.
Here's where I whip out my pedigree. I saw Springsteen at the Bottom Line back in '74, when he debuted "Jungleland," a full year before he graced the covers of both "Newsweek" and "Time." I'd purchased the debut and never quite warmed up to it, loved "Spirit In The Night," but when the second LP came out I was hooked, the entire second side was required listening, but who could resist "Kitty" and "Sandy" on side one, never mind "Wild Billy's Circus Story."
And on my first date with my ex-wife I played "Candy's Room" at full blast.
But by that time Bruce Springsteen was everybody's, he'd sold out a week at the Coliseum. He was considered pop.
But really he never was.
Unlike back in '81, I had a phenomenal seat. And standing by the stage was a guy with a thick neck and greased back hair sporting an upper body built big in the gym and tattoos upon his back and arms. He was a Jersey guy.
Bruce Springsteen is a Jersey guy. From back before Jon Bon Jovi rehabilitated the state. From back before Atlantic City was resuscitated and then collapsed again. When the state smelled and your goal was to get out of there.
Live long enough in Los Angeles and you forget all this.
But I remembered it Thursday night.
Bruce Springsteen has a bump in his nose, his face is cute, but mere feet away you see he's a misfit, who channeled his desire and talent to success which soothes him but never satiates him. Because he's an outsider.
Who lived in bars and practice halls with a dream in his sights that few could understand.
That's where the music lived, in bars. You did covers and a few originals. The patrons got drunk and tried not to fight. And you honed your chops and got high and got laid and other than having no bucks you were living the life.
Not that you thought it was forever, it couldn't be forever, you had to break through.
And Bruce Springsteen did. He became a star relatively early in his tenure. Got married, went to the shrink, got divorced, had a family and is now out on the road reliving the glory days.
I'm too old to do all this. I didn't have children. I can't go for a victory lap when I've had no success.
And all of this went through my mind watching the Boss at the Sports Arena. My life slid by. People my age are thinking of retirement.
But once upon a time we were the youth, we were the cutting edge, there were no social networks, cell phones were a "Star Trek" fantasy, we had to leave the house to connect, to feel alive, and where I felt the most comfortable was at the show.
It was completely different. No one stood, except for maybe the encores. There were seats. You didn't go to be seen, you went to communicate with the music, bond with the gods.
And it was like that Thursday night.
And it won't ever be that way again.
It can't be. Mystery is history. You can see it all online. And scarcity is a thing of the past. You laid down your money for "The River" and it's all you listened to for a week, maybe longer, because it's all you could afford, and you wanted to digest its truth.
And the highlights Thursday night were the slow songs. Most notably "Independence Day," but also "I Wanna Marry You," never mind the title track, "The River." You sat there transfixed...how did I get from here to there, I avoided so many potholes, but a few I fell in, a few I never recovered from.
But the band kept playing on. That's what musicians do, play. Stardom is a byproduct, at best.
This was a tunnel to the past, exuding a certain amount of love, but there was no pretext that Bruce Springsteen still mattered, was still hip, was still ruling the charts. By playing "The River" complete and a bunch of hits not only did Bruce give the audience what it wanted to hear, he could be loose, he had nothing to prove.
Other than he was the best damn rock star on the face of the planet.
That was the scary part. After the two hours of "The River" the Boss did an hour of hits and...he started out at 11 and stayed there. I can't say a negative thing about it, it was positively thrilling, it's how he built his career, but I couldn't help thinking what a screwed-up guy he was, that he needed to do this, he had us at hello, when he took the stage, never mind went into "The Ties That Bind."
But at this point, deep into the show, the audience was no longer individuals but a great big mass, you see Bruce was in a trance, he was home, in his element, it was what he lived for, he was gonna give us that high and get one in return.
No one does this anymore.
Because no one's done that many dates. And what we consider a star is far different from who Springsteen was and is. Springsteen is Sally Field, he can't believe everybody really likes him.
But they do.
So you're listening to "The River" remembering what once was. Before Bruce danced in the dark, when he was just another guy on the FM with a hit who was soldiering on, when our albums were our most treasured possessions, when we knew every word because we'd heard them so much.
And it was astounding how everybody sang along, especially on "Hungry Heart," a second-rate tune on an A level album. But "Hungry Heart" was the hit, so the assembled multitude could sing the entire first verse without Bruce's help. Hits still rule, they're the anchor upon which you build your career.
But it's when Bruce played "Badlands" that the building started to levitate. This show was really for fans, and in my mind it's a toss-up whether the second album or "Darkness" is the best.
And although the band also played "The Promised Land," the first highlight of the encore section of the program was "Backstreets," that's when heads started to explode, because there's nothing like hearing live songs you know by heart, ones that make you forget all the detritus in your life and just feel good, and seeing Bruce and his compatriots channel the gods made you feel good.
And they did "Rosalita." Even "Dancing In The Dark."
But one of the thrills of the show is having songs you liked but didn't love get elevated to iconic status, you understand them in ways you previously did not, and that happened with "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out." As exuberant as the number is, Bruce was denied. We've all been denied, we've all been on the losing end.
But we just put on another record and soldier on.
The hero of the band, its driver, the underpinning, the one who holds it all down, is Max Weinberg. He may not have a good rep, we've all heard the stories of what went down at "Conan," who was there by the way, along with a slew of other luminaries, but to watch this sixtysomething pound the drums and keep the beat for three plus hours was a revelation, he was the one element the band could not do without.
Other than Bruce himself. Who kept us marveling that he was still doing this act at 66. Jumping up and down, clowning and cajoling. Single-handedly proving that rock and roll is still alive, even if it might sometime die.
And the rest of the players showed their age, not in their playing, not in their performance, but their mugs, their hair, their countenance. They're lifers, this is all they can do. In the seventies they were kings, amongst the richest in America, now they're paupers compared to the bankers and the techies but...they don't care, they're just strumming and smiling all the while.
As were those in attendance.
This was nothing other than what it was billed as. Like I stated above, there was no pretense that this was young, relevant and hip. This was just what it always was and forever more shall be.
The first generation of classic rockers is dying off.
The second is starting to show wear and tear.
And at some point in time there will be no mas. The records will live on, you'll be able to hear them, but you will no longer be able to go to the show and experience the magic of what once was. Hell, the E Street Band has holes in it, illness and death have taken their toll.
We're a nation of individuals. Searching for connection. Looking to feel we belong.
And on Thursday night I felt I was part of a vast continuum, of misfits who'd lived for the music each and every day. Who knew all the players, the producers and the engineers, who needed to get closer, who considered the venue their church and those on its pulpit their priests.
Bruce Springsteen is just a vessel. He's channeling commitment and desire and anger and frustration and laying them all out for us to explore and experience.
Strip away the endorsements. Strip away the streaming payment debates. Strip away the fame. Strip away the hype.
And what you're left with is a performance.
And Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band blew us away Thursday night.
They'll tear the Sports Arena down. Not everyone will see the band again.
But we'll all remember.
When fifteen thousand threw their hands in the air and said...
I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL!

Bob,
What a couple of months it has been.
My working life seems to be disappearing.
So many great musicians have passed away in such a short period.
I was thinking about George Martin last night and all the work we did together and now Keith.
I promoted many of the Nice shows in the UK including their last performance in London.
ELP was a favourite band to work with.
They were special, innovative and explosive on stage.
Stewart Young became their manager on my recommendation.
He was a class mate at school.
During their time they conquered the world.
Keith used to pop into my office for tea.
He lived nearbye in London.
He will be missed, as will all the others who have passed this year.
Last week Roger Daltrey, Bill Curbishley and myself celebrated our birthdays at dinner in New York.
We talked about how good life was.
And now another great artist has passed.

Atlantic bands during those days and were all nice guys to boot.

There shows always sold out and Keith always stole the show

Just viewed the video of Chip and his son Max after the basketball game and it said it all. Chip loved his family, and his work. I had the honor and privilege to work with Chip for many years. You'd think your were doing him a favor by booking a band you had never heard of but then when the show sold out turns out Chip was the one doing the favor, like when we did Phish at IU Auditorium in Bloomington.
Chip's demeanor was always positive never heavy handed or negative, just cheerfully focused on doing the best for his artists and managers, whether it was booking a baby act into a club or a national tour with Dave Matthews Band.
He will be sorely missed.

He is the father of the entire modern recorded music industry. It is his genius and imagination that changed the recording studio from a place for the rigid and faithful reproduction of live performance to an instrument of sublime creativity and endless possibility. He saw in recording the ability to tell stories and create worlds through music and sound using techniques created for radio drama - many by him personally. He extended the "stage" of recorded music past the four walls of the studio out into a whole new universe of sonic imagery. Though it all seems almost commonplace now, this was truly revolutionary stuff in his time. And all of us who tell stories in sound and music owe our craft mostly to him and the Beatles.
At the same time, he was the archetypal refined English Gentleman; a soft and well spoken, brilliant man of profound principle and respect for the world in which he lived. He was warm, humble, impish and imposing all at the same time. And he was, above all, ethical and totally genuine in his dealings with others. He earned his title in every way and I'm sure many called him "sir" even before he was knighted.
I have a funny George Martin story. So many of us do. But right now, as I head to the studio in the same way I have for decades, I can only think of him and his wonderful story, and of my profound gratitude for his historical life and work - and for the wonderful life and career that he (and the late, great Jack Richardson) made possible for me.

The time I had the opportunity to meet him briefly, I knew what I wanted to ask. I wanted to know exactly what was going on in his head, heart and gut when he made the decision to sign The Beatles.
His response sent chills down my spine: "I thought they were actually a pretty crappy band, and there was no evidence that they could write songs, but when they walked in the room together, there was so much overwhelming charisma, I felt like they changed the molecules in the room. I signed them because they were special people".

I've never sent in a response before and I don't know if you'll see this. However, I just wanted to say I hate that it's beginning to be the norm for artists to not put their albums on Spotify. I've been a fan of The 1975 for a few years. I've gone to their shows, even travelling a few hours away, and I've bought merch along with theirlast album. I hate that they didn't release their album on Spotify this time. With the way they do their marketing, I didn't feel compelled to go out and buy it. Sure, I liked the few songs they released but it wasn't enough for me to be like, "I need to go buy this album. I need to know what's on it immediately!" Call me crazy... And I guess they were worried people wouldn't buy the album if it was on Spotify but I don't think that's the case. Or is it?
Am I refusing to give into change because I won't sign up for Apple Music? I'm 24. I studied music business in college, and I work in digital marketing but no one talks about Apple Music. But then you have these artists who continue to do exclusives on that platform. Why? Money? Because it's always money. Money over exposure, it seems. And when it comes to Adele, sure millions of people bought her album, but like you said.. are people still listening and who are these people? Who can name a few songs off the album besides Hello or When We Were Young?
Anyways, I'm interested to see if ZAYN releases his album on Spotify...

Yes Ezrin did work on The Elder which wasn't well received (although many fans have come to appreciate it over the years). But, several years before that (in fact, 40 years ago next month) he produced Destroyer, from which KISS still plays up to 6 songs from on any given night. I would say that was pretty well received by fans.

A fascinating and entertaining mailbag today, Bob --
I was impressed by Bob Ezrin's description of the producer's task. I know it's the producer's charge to help the artist achieve his musical vision, and I know Bob did that. But I confess that for most of the 60 albums I produced, I also tried to make the record one that would please not the only artist, but me too. I suspect that many producers hoped the band wasn't particularly engaged in the recording process itself, thus allowing the producer to have his way...
And about Glenn -- I was fortunate to have been both a golf partner and, for an afternoon, a producer for Glenn Frey. On the course and in the studio he was courteous, funny, engaging, talented, and above all, totally dedicated to the task at hand. He played a lead break for me, and since this was Glenn Frey, and since I wanted him to see what a careful listener I was, I made some quick notes on the spots I thought he should fix.
When he returned to the control room for a listen, I told him there were three spots he might want to replay; he said "I heard seven."

As a Black man, Kanye is an embarrassment and I wish we could give him to another race. Like Bill Cosby, I wish he would just go away. His Grammy appearances detract from the show's credibility - what little it has. He has a big machine (not that one) behind him, and like Trump, the media feels compelled to give him attention. I was surprised to read Steve Gorman's very kind words in your mailbag regarding music moguls.
Not surprised that Steve would say something so complimentary, he was always very appreciative of my counsel and was not The Black Crowes band member he referenced in regard to "pushing away" my advice.
However I was caught off guard that he took the time to express his feelings publicly.
I'm writing because I want to thank you for including his comments in your newsletter.
It was a very pleasant surprise to come across as I was planning an escape to Bora Bora while on the phone "arm wrestling" with another artist who was hard at work attempting to sabotage their career :-)
In any case, I will conclude by saying that from my experience, management is a game played by rules self created; part entrepreneurial, part motivation, part manipulation, part vision, part smoke and mirrors with daily dosages of both ecstatic joy and unexpected horror.
I recall the great Irving Azoff quote when asked what he felt was the worst thing about management and he replied, "Having to give the artist 80%."
There was a time when I looked at management commission as compensation for relentless effort and results.
As the years went on, I came to see it more as, let's just call it, hazard pay.

Subject: Getting our attention - Collect ZIP CODES Too!
Bob,
Good article on collecting e-mails. Something else that artists overlook - collecting ZIP CODES of fans.
If you have the Zip Codes, you know where your fans are located, can send out tour dates when you are in their area.
You may look at a zip code and perhaps 50 miles within that area you have a couple 100 or couple 1,000 (more successful indie artists) fans.
Send the fans in the designated area an e-mail to see if they would want you to do a house concert or play a local venue.
Let's say you play a venue, it is sold out in advance because you communicated to your fan base. Then call the local radio station and see if they would like to come to the show, introduce you on stage as it gives the local radio station some promotion in front of their fans and just maybe, opens a door to the station for the future - as you are selling tickets in their area.
Have an area of your website - "capture page" that you give a song or two to download to your fans in exchange for the zip code and e-mail.
Then engage with your fans - invite them to join the fan club that can include streaming from your home or studio once a month or whatever works for you. What if we could have done this with our favorite artists years ago - would we have paid to join the artist fan club -- HECK YEA!
ZIP CODES - collect your fans ZIP Codes for shows, fan clubs and merch in the future and oh yea - to sell your music to them too!

I have never had an actor friend who didn't wish he or she was a rockstar...Why? Because actors are in search of a character and musicians are SO brutally real ( at least they use to be...Yes even I who was the kid in big bands in the late 80s and 90s is as old as dirt now).
Most of the great actors I know behind closed doors are bananas ( comedians are even darker).
This isn't a put down but they are shells looking for a role to complete who they are or wish they were. My last actor girlfriend one day showed up with a new haircut and a new conservative set of clothes. I asked Wow what's going on?

I couldn't watch Vinyl here in Paris but I played The Mercer Arts Center many times. It was the classiest venue NYC ever had. There were multiple rooms with many bands playing and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest previewed as a play there before it came out as a film. The only booking policy was that you had to be good or original. Sometimes both. Biggest band to break out of there was KISS. The Dolls were huge when they were still unsigned and their show at the uptown Waldorf Astoria Hotel was indeed a true riot. I opened for them at Academy of Music when bassist Arthur Kane's girlfriend tried to cut his thumb off the night before. And at this same time over at Max's Kansas City on Park Ave South everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Bob Marley and myself was playing for pocket-sized crowds. In my opinion the pre-punk early 70's NYC scene was the Golden Age for music in my old hometown...but I'm prejudiced. It was eclectic and accomplished and it paved the way for CBGBs and all that
followed. At least, it seems, they got that right.

Hey you know what ? The more RocknRoll on TV the better. I'm not going to go there & say it wasn't like that back in the day .. There's enough archetypes in there to fulfill anyone's RocknRoll dream of what the 70's were like.
I'm a big NY doll's fan since about '73, just a mere mention of them let alone a entire scenario portraying them doing 2 or 3 songs is beyond belief.
They were truly one of the greatest RocknRoll, not rock, bands to ever step on to a stage.
Their influence is immeasurable, so the point being any kudos leaped upon the Dolls is good with me.
They truly were, at the height of their powers, RocknRoll Gods.
Guess you had to be there?
I was.
So the daze of Hullabaloo & Shindig are well passed, so is MTV.
We have Vinyl to be thankful for & it's good for business.

This little story might be instructive as it relates to the music industry versus the fictionalized music industry:
In the early 1980's as I was tasting an early measure of success as a music executive (In this case Head of A&R for Epic/CBS Records in Los Angeles) I was asked through corporate channels if I would allow a couple of young Harvard Grad major-studio-attached screenwriters to shadow methrough my work days (and nights) for a week or so. The writers' intent was to gather and absorb what really was going on behind the scenes inthe biz for purposes of some movie they had up their sleeves. I agreed and these fellows did indeed sit in my office all day long, had access tocompany meetings, demo pitches, phone calls with managers, attorneys, publicists, marketing and promotion execs, whatever. Nothing off limits.
Into the evening with me they came. Dinner (wish I could remember where...Le Dome? La Serre? Martoni's? then a few clubs for shows (ditto wish I could remember...Troub? Madame Wong's? The Country Club? Whiskey?). Finally, some courtesy calls to in-studio projects at what certainly would have been The Record Plant (3rd Street) or the Village or maybe the earliest incarnation of Conway. They got to meet some amazing producers and engineers, etc. that night. In those days among them would have been some legends. John Boylan, Tom Werman for sure. Paul Grupp, Mick Gazauski, Ed Cherney, Rose Mann, Chris Stone I would imagine as well. This all would have been a pretty typical - and typically long - work day for me in those days. They saw it all.
Next morning these gents met me back at my office for what I expected would be round two of a few more days of this. They sheepishly thanked me and then said they had what they needed and were going to end their research early. Let me guess, I said. You were expecting coke spoon necklaces, diamond pinkie rings, a bit of heroin, murder threats, hookers, groupies, The Mafia, and fistfights. Right? And all you saw was bunch of people working hard at making music, promoting music, selling music. People talking on phones, sitting at recording consoles. Musicians actually playing their instruments. Artists concerned about hitting the right notes. To their credit, the screenwriters AGREED! Nothing going on - in the world I was able to show them at least - fit the preconceived narrative of their screenplay about The Music Business, even though it WAS The Music Business! Reality had no place in this endeavor.
Now I'm not saying the salacious stuff wasn't around or never happened. And I'm not saying I deserved a Merit Badge for perfect personal conduct in those days. That would be stupid. Some crazy stuff happened. Of courseit did. Just not everywhere, all the time and for everybody. What I hope my tiny tale above points out, and as some of your commenters have already commented, is that the version of the music business in Vinyl is based on a generation's long held fantasy of The Music Business. A fictional framework for an audience who wants their stories to hew to the dramatic narrative they want to believe whether it's true or not. It's more fun that way. Those of us (meaning me, most of your readers and, you, too, Bob) are too close. The actual world of 70's NYC music certainly existed but like so much of the past, it, too, has now become a fantasy.

My mom gave her this advice: "All buyers are liars." Don't use my name if you print this, I apologize for the length, I think / hope you'll get a kick out this though.
I'm 46 and online dating came around when I was about 30. I used to tear up OKCupid and JDate and in fact met my lady whom I currently live with on Jdate about ten years ago and we've been serious for almost 8 years. Before that after much experimentation I'd figured out a system that allowed me to meet and bed over 100 women in the course of a six or seven year run. I am painfully socially awkward and very rarely in my life have I ever been able to meet women while being out and about, plus I work in bars and venues and that's the last place I want to be when I don't have to be... so online dating was like a Godsend to me.
I can't tell you how many women I met who lied about their own height / figure / job / likes / dislikes, and who used pix that were years old, showed up on dates looking entirely different than their pix, so it goes both ways. I'm not a great looking guy, at least I don't think so, but I'm well put together and well groomed and all my pix were current. I got really tired very quickly of being "interviewed" for husband material at some pub or bar somewhere.
I began to be able to spot red flags in advance and avoid the obvious ones. I discovered that if a woman only had upper body pix on her profile chances are she's heavy, so eventually I'd skip over that (shallow I know). If she has no pictures of her with friends or family chances are she's a sociopath, and if all of her profile text was poorly written stuff about long walks on the beach and looking for a serious marriage minded man, chances are greater that she'd sleep with me very quickly, but then wind up being a stalker or overly emotional because she felt like if I had sex quickly with her I owed her something. Also "Work Hard and Play Hard" was a huge red flag indicating that she only likes frat guys, muscleheads or is a gold digger. I stopped going on dates with women I met online entirely, opting instead to find a way to either go to their place or have them come to mine. Eventually I only dated women who would come to my place to meet for the first time.
Also I discovered that a woman will NEVER have sex with you after a dinner date because she's full of food and feels fat, so there's no way she will want to be naked or even risk being tempted by making out, plus even if I was super attracted and thought we could have a relationship, the more "dates" we went on, the more power she would have to choose when and whether to sleep with me, which of course is what I was looking for at the time. I discovered I didn't have much patience for courtship.
So I began to look for well written, more poetic, deeper prose, and goofiness and began experimenting with my own profiles, lots of run-on sentences that re-wrote the standard phrases - sure everybody "likes" walks on the beach, but everybody LOVES "the sound of waves crashing while we are feeding gulls French fries and giggling about it while the sun goes down." I began my profile with "Lovable rock n' roll vagabond scamp and secret nerd seeks clever spiritual smartipants for late night pillow talk about life, the universe and everything, and maybe even a few eskimo kisses and glasses of Spanish red wine if we hit it off. Not looking to jump into anything too quickly but open to deep connections that could develop into some kind of "best friends who can't keep their hands off each other" situations."
This clarifies that you are that you are dating around and somewhat choosy without saying it outright. Also everybody says they like red wine, but I like 'SPANISH red wine" which give the impression that I have a discerning taste, which I'd like to think that I do. Plus I never ever mentioned looks / beauty as all women are self-conscious about that. If I reached out to her it's a given that I'm attracted. They know that.
Anyway, bottom line, people want to FEEL SOMETHING when searching online for opposite sex, logic comes later. I got a lot of women who would email me first with stuff like "wow, you are a breath of fresh air" or "why are you still single???"
I know this is long, but in the interest of NOT having to go on drink / dinner dates, I developed a nice rap that I called the "secret agent" rap, which, once I got it honed, got me more than 50% response rate when reaching out, 30% meet rate, and a 20% bed rate after a little flirting for sometimes even less than a week, and I never had to leave my house. So generally for every ten women I wrote or who wrote me online, five of them would respond and generally two of them would sleep with me. Not bad for a socially awkward average looking guy!
"I'd say something like - Hey I know you are getting clobbered with emails from a sea of jackasses, my girlfriends (friends who are girls) tell me they are getting clobbered and sometimes show me the idiots who write them. Wow do I feel for you! Meanwhile you seem like a cool chica, too cool for this website, you must be some sort of a secret agent who lures unsuspecting boys on the interwebs for your nefarious purposes! I'm on to you!"
I made it fun and goofy, and when I'd get their phone number I would start texting them "secret agent 009, what sort of intriguing mission are you up to today?" They'd always play along, and after some text flirting, I knew there was a connection and I would assign them the following mission:
"Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to procure a corkscrew and deliver it to the following location at 20:00 hours on Tuesday evening. Make sure you are not being followed as the location and the mission are TOP SECRET" The location would be my house. They knew that too. The psychology behind it is that if a woman gets you something or does something for you, that's a rationalization that she likes you and the secret mission says you are fun. I had a drawer full of corkscrews by the time I met my current girlfriend!
Some women would balk and insist on meeting for drinks or dinner. I'd tell them I'm really busy, but maybe next week, usually we both would just flake. It was ok because there were always more in the wings.
When they would show up I would answer the door very confidently, invite them in and just tell them "look I know you came to my house, and you probably don't do things like this. I figure we'll pop open a bottle of vino and see if we get along, if you feel uncomfortable you can leave at any time and I will totally understand." I would show absolutely no creepiness or focus on sex, just some wine and convo, and usually within an hour or so if we clicked I'd tell her I'm so relieved that she's not some psycho axe murderer and that she's as cute as her pix. Somewhere in the conversation I would mention a couple of my gold / platinum records of artists I've worked with but I don't want to show them just yet because they are in my bedroom and I don't trust her to not take advantage of me if I show her my bedroom. Eventually we'd make it up there, meanwhile I had Aretha's "Live At The Fillmore" in the CD player and a candle ready to go. By the time it got to "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
I'd ask her to dance, we'd slow dance and I would always let her make the first move, which she would ALWAYS do. Very rarely were these one night stands, they usually resulted in casual dating that would last anywhere from a few weeks to a few years or more.
I know this is totally different than the article in the Times, but similarly to what Birnbaum did, I experimented a LOT until I found the right system, and when I was ready to stop dating around I was in a great position to find someone to love.

I was doing on-line dating years back and at 5'2, I noticed a lot of men list a 5'6 minimum height request. I started listing 5'6 on my profile. Normally I wear heels and none of the men noticed I was not 5'2 when we met.
I did not meet anyone that worked out online.....but I did meet my current boyfriend at a party and he is 6'5. Funny Bob...he said he would not have dated me if he met me online as he was normally not interested in women that were 5'2 . His minimum was at least 5'6. Too funny really.

I've been a subscriber to your newsletter for a long time. When we submitted our story to the Times wedding announcements I never thought we would end up in the vows section. I certainly never thought we would end up in one of your posts.
I think you hit on the most important part of searching for love. People really don't know what they want. When presented with a list of checkboxes during signup they think they can be super specific and narrow in their search. The reality is a perfect match doesn't exist. As you said its about acceptance.
The punchline to our story is that even though Tracy is 4'11" she had her minimum height set at 5'8". She was the one who made the initial contact which means that if I hadn't changed my height we most likely wouldn't have met.

And then he started Eagles. And then he married "…my dream girl, Cindy". This guy left a big, wide, beautiful path that musicians have been traveling for over 40 years.

But at this point the hype has exceeded my interest. All the press stories on her new album...bounced right off of me.
BOB, PLEASE DEFINE HYPE, IS IT BECAUSE YOU THINK IT'S ALL BOUGHT AND SOLD? MAYBE SOME OF THE A-LIST ARTISTS CAN MANIPULATE THE MEDIA TO GET FAVORABLE COVERAGE, BUT NOT IN OUR WORLD. WHEN YOU DO SOMETHING AT A CONSISTENTLY HIGH LEVEL FOR 35+ YEARS AND CONTINUE TO RAISE THE BAR, AS SHE'S BEEN GIVEN CREDIT FOR ON THIS RECORD, IT'S NOT HYPE. MORE SPECIFICALLY, I'VE ALWAYS THOUGHT YOU HAVE A BLIND SPOT FOR THE "MIDDLE CLASS" ARTISTS. YOU HAVE WRITTEN MUCH ABOUT THE 1% ARTISTS SUCH AS THE EAGLES, U2, TAYLOR SWIFT, ADELE ETC., OFTEN USING EXAMPLES THAT ONLY APPLY IN THEIR WORLDS. It swings, from the opening notes, the call and response of the two guitarists, you're immediately hooked, you find yourself nodding your head, even though this is the first time you've ever heard it.
We live in a world where the "hits" get all the attention, the toppermost of the poppermost on the radio. And some of those tracks are great confections, but if you make music just a bit outside the format you get no airplay, people are unaware of you, but that does not mean they don't hunger for what you're offering.
I've got no idea what Bill Frisell looks like, nor Greg Leisz either. But I can hear the years of practice, the honing of their chops, and their interplay is reminiscent of Duane and Derek on that double album so long ago. A lot slower, with even more soul. I'm sure Eric would love to participate.
Actually, Greg Leisz played in Clapton's band, got to give Slowhand credit.
YOU ARE SPOT ON ABOUT YEARS OF PRACTICE AND HONING CHOPS. BEING ABLE TO WATCH THEM WORK TOGETHER IN THE STUDIO WITH LU'S BAND WAS ABSOLUTE MAGIC.
But Eric hasn't riveted me this way recently.
"Dust" is otherworldly, hypnotic, you can hear the Americana roots, but the track is not burdened by that moniker. It's just music. Made by people who put sound first, as opposed to revenue.
NO ONE HAS EVER KNOW WHAT CATEGORY TO PUT HER IN, HER ROOTS ARE HER ROOTS BUT YOU'RE RIGHT, SHE JUST PLAYS MUSIC. ANYONE WHO WANTS TO ACTUALLY LISTEN TO HER PAST RECORDS CAN LISTEN ON SPOTIFY, BECAUSE ALL OF HER UNIVERSAL CATLOG IS THERE.
AND YES, YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT -WE DID AND ALWAYS WILL PUT HER SONGS AND THE MUSIC/SOUND FIRST. AND BY THE WAY THIS TRACK IS ONE LIVE TAKE IN THE STUDIO. THE WHOLE ALBUM WAS DONE THAT WAY.
And there ain't gonna be much revenue if Lucinda continues to march forward with one hand behind her back.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHERE THE REVENUE IS -I KEEP ASKING AND NO ONE CAN TELL ME WHERE THE END OF THE RAINBOW IS. TO ME IT'S VERY SIMPLE BUSINESS-THE UPSIDE, WHICH TO ME REMAINS NEBULOUS, DOESN'T OUTWEIGH THE DOWNSIDE, WHICH IS CURRENTLY NOT AS NEBULOUS. IF THE UPSIDE IS DISCOVERY, AS YOU SEEM TO BE SAYING, SHE HAS 10+ CATALOG RECORDS AND THE SINGLES FROM THE LAST TWO RECORDS ON SPOTIFY.
THE DOWNSIDE -BEYOND THE CANNIBALIZED SALES, AND I'VE YET TO SEE ANY TANGIBLE EVIDENCE THAT SPOTIFY DRIVES SALES.
HERE'S ANOTHER EXAMPLE, LUCINDA HAD HER SONG, CHANGE THE LOCKS, PLAYED IN AN IMPACT SCENE ON THE TV SHOW THE AFFAIR, AND IN THE NEXT WEEK WE HAD SOMETHING LIKE 15,000 DOWNLOADS-HOW MUCH OF THAT WOULD I HAVE LOST IF IT WAS ON SPOTIFY? AND THAT WASN'T THE ONLY SONG THAT SHE HAD ON TV RECENTLY. IN REGARDS TO OVERALL SALES, IN THE U.S. HER LAST RECORD, DOWN WHERE THE SPIRIT MEETS THE BONE WILL BE EQUAL TO HER LAST UNIVERSAL RECORD AND DID GREAT IN THE REST OF THE WORLD. THAT WAS A THREE YEAR SPAN IN WHICH THE OVERALL INDUSTRY WAS DOWN, WHAT 30%? AND WE'RE FLAT, SO YOU CALL THAT A 30% LIFT. THE NEW RECORD JUST CHARTED IN 10 COUNTRIES OUTSIDE THE US, EASILY THE MOST SHE'S EVER HAD. AND BECAUSE WE NOW OWN HER MASTERS AND HER PUBLISHING OUR REVENUE IS SOLID. I THINK WE'RE DOING PRETTY GOOD.
Yes, I laud her publicity campaign, however meaningless. But keeping her album off Spotify? Why? When you can stream on YouTube, steal from Russia... Why are musicians so ignorant, I understand they're financially challenged, but anybody who knows anything about today's music business knows that availability is key, you've got to make it easy, if you put money first you're demonstrating short term thinking, there's plenty of dough for those who connect.
UP ABOVE YOU JUST MENTIONED THAT RECORD SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS MADE WITH SOUND FIRST, REVENUE SECOND. BUT IF I THINK ABOUT MONEY AND KEEPING A BUSINESS MOVING FORWARD I'M A SHORT TERM THINKER? SO BE IT. BUT IN THE LONG TERM I STILL HAVE TO PAY THE FOR THOSE GREAT MUSICIANS AND THE STUDIO AND THE GREAT ENGINEERS THAT MAKE IT SOUND GREAT. YEP, THIS JUST IN, RECORDS COST MONEY TO MAKE, MAYBE NOT AS MUCH AS THEY USED TO BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY YOU STILL GOTTA WRITE THOSE CHECKS. IGNORANT? NOT HARDLY. I'M IGNORANT TO DRINK THE SPOTIFY KOOL-AID. THE SPOTIFY DOUGH WOULDN'T PAY FOR THE GAS TO DRIVE TO THE STUDIO.
DO YOU KNOW HOW FEW CD'S/DOWNLOADS TO MAKE UP FOR THE "LOST" SPOTIFY REVENUE.

IT SEEMS HE HASN'T BEEN GETTING PAID FOR THE USE OF HIS COPYRIGHTS BECAUSE SPOTIFY DELEGATED THE JOB OF PAYING MECHANICAL ROYALTIES TO THE HARRY FOX AGENCY, WHO IS RUNNING SEVERAL YEARS BEHIND. SPOTIFY HAS YET TO ADDRESS THE CONCERNS OF THE INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING COMMUNITY ENSURING THAT THESE PAYMENTS ARE MADE TO THE ARTISTS/WRITERS WHO DEPEND ON THEM FOR THEIR LIVELIHOOD. THEY ARE LEGALLY BOUND TO DO SO, AND UNTIL THEY DO THAT IT IS JUST ANOTHER REASON WHY I CHOOSE TO SIT ON THE SIDELINE.

NO THEY DIDN'T, YOU YOURSELF MENTION RUSSIA ABOVE. AND FRANKLY, I'M NOT COMPLETELY SURE WHICH IS WORSE, SOME KIDS PIRATING SOME MUSIC FOR THEIR OWN ENJOYMENT (SOMETIMES) OR PEOPLE GETTING FILTHY RICH OFF THAT SAME MUSIC AND AT THE SAME TIME TELLING YOU HOW GREAT IT IS FOR YOU. P.S. I own no stock in Spotify, I receive no remuneration from the company. But I've got to applaud an enterprise that cut down piracy and put all the world's music in one place for one low price. As for its free tier... You can't be much of a music fan if you employ it. You can't pick what you want to hear on your mobile device, and we live in a mobile world of instant access. We just want to know what to listen to. And it turns out that Spotify's algorithm is better than Apple's hand curation, the same way Amazon's recommendation algorithms are better than the human recommenders the company used to employ. That's right, more books were sold by algorithmic recommendation than by human recommendation. Amazon fired all the humans. But we need humans to create art, to play music, and "Dust" demonstrates so much humanity, if only Lucinda and Tom would employ the new means of getting the word out.

What a couple of months it has been.
My working life seems to be disappearing.
So many great musicians have passed away in such a short period.
I was thinking about George Martin last night and all the work we did together and now Keith.
I promoted many of the Nice shows in the UK including their last performance in London.
ELP was a favourite band to work with.
They were special, innovative and explosive on stage.
Stewart Young became their manager on my recommendation.
He was a class mate at school.
During their time they conquered the world.
Keith used to pop into my office for tea.
He lived nearbye in London.
He will be missed, as will all the others who have passed this year.
Last week Roger Daltrey, Bill Curbishley and myself celebrated our birthdays at dinner in New York.
We talked about how good life was.
And now another great artist has passed.

Just viewed the video of Chip and his son Max after the basketball game and it said it all. Chip loved his family, and his work. I had the honor and privilege to work with Chip for many years. You'd think your were doing him a favor by booking a band you had never heard of but then when the show sold out turns out Chip was the one doing the favor, like when we did Phish at IU Auditorium in Bloomington.
Chip's demeanor was always positive never heavy handed or negative, just cheerfully focused on doing the best for his artists and managers, whether it was booking a baby act into a club or a national tour with Dave Matthews Band.
He will be sorely missed.

He is the father of the entire modern recorded music industry. It is his genius and imagination that changed the recording studio from a place for the rigid and faithful reproduction of live performance to an instrument of sublime creativity and endless possibility. He saw in recording the ability to tell stories and create worlds through music and sound using techniques created for radio drama - many by him personally. He extended the "stage" of recorded music past the four walls of the studio out into a whole new universe of sonic imagery. Though it all seems almost commonplace now, this was truly revolutionary stuff in his time. And all of us who tell stories in sound and music owe our craft mostly to him and the Beatles.
At the same time, he was the archetypal refined English Gentleman; a soft and well spoken, brilliant man of profound principle and respect for the world in which he lived. He was warm, humble, impish and imposing all at the same time. And he was, above all, ethical and totally genuine in his dealings with others. He earned his title in every way and I'm sure many called him "sir" even before he was knighted.
I have a funny George Martin story. So many of us do. But right now, as I head to the studio in the same way I have for decades, I can only think of him and his wonderful story, and of my profound gratitude for his historical life and work - and for the wonderful life and career that he (and the late, great Jack Richardson) made possible for me.

The time I had the opportunity to meet him briefly, I knew what I wanted to ask. I wanted to know exactly what was going on in his head, heart and gut when he made the decision to sign The Beatles.
His response sent chills down my spine: "I thought they were actually a pretty crappy band, and there was no evidence that they could write songs, but when they walked in the room together, there was so much overwhelming charisma, I felt like they changed the molecules in the room. I signed them because they were special people".

I've never sent in a response before and I don't know if you'll see this. However, I just wanted to say I hate that it's beginning to be the norm for artists to not put their albums on Spotify. I've been a fan of The 1975 for a few years. I've gone to their shows, even travelling a few hours away, and I've bought merch along with theirlast album. I hate that they didn't release their album on Spotify this time. With the way they do their marketing, I didn't feel compelled to go out and buy it. Sure, I liked the few songs they released but it wasn't enough for me to be like, "I need to go buy this album. I need to know what's on it immediately!" Call me crazy... And I guess they were worried people wouldn't buy the album if it was on Spotify but I don't think that's the case. Or is it?
Am I refusing to give into change because I won't sign up for Apple Music? I'm 24. I studied music business in college, and I work in digital marketing but no one talks about Apple Music. But then you have these artists who continue to do exclusives on that platform. Why? Money? Because it's always money. Money over exposure, it seems. And when it comes to Adele, sure millions of people bought her album, but like you said.. are people still listening and who are these people? Who can name a few songs off the album besides Hello or When We Were Young?
Anyways, I'm interested to see if ZAYN releases his album on Spotify...

Yes Ezrin did work on The Elder which wasn't well received (although many fans have come to appreciate it over the years). But, several years before that (in fact, 40 years ago next month) he produced Destroyer, from which KISS still plays up to 6 songs from on any given night. I would say that was pretty well received by fans.

A fascinating and entertaining mailbag today, Bob --
I was impressed by Bob Ezrin's description of the producer's task. I know it's the producer's charge to help the artist achieve his musical vision, and I know Bob did that. But I confess that for most of the 60 albums I produced, I also tried to make the record one that would please not the only artist, but me too. I suspect that many producers hoped the band wasn't particularly engaged in the recording process itself, thus allowing the producer to have his way...
And about Glenn -- I was fortunate to have been both a golf partner and, for an afternoon, a producer for Glenn Frey. On the course and in the studio he was courteous, funny, engaging, talented, and above all, totally dedicated to the task at hand. He played a lead break for me, and since this was Glenn Frey, and since I wanted him to see what a careful listener I was, I made some quick notes on the spots I thought he should fix.
When he returned to the control room for a listen, I told him there were three spots he might want to replay; he said "I heard seven."

As a Black man, Kanye is an embarrassment and I wish we could give him to another race. Like Bill Cosby, I wish he would just go away. His Grammy appearances detract from the show's credibility - what little it has. He has a big machine (not that one) behind him, and like Trump, the media feels compelled to give him attention. He's quiet on social issues, ignoring topics like the Flint water crises and instead focusing on his own egomaniacal rants.Maybe he can take a year long break and come back as someone else - even if it's Chris Gaines.

Not surprised that Steve would say something so complimentary, he was always very appreciative of my counsel and was not The Black Crowes band member he referenced in regard to "pushing away" my advice.
However I was caught off guard that he took the time to express his feelings publicly.
I'm writing because I want to thank you for including his comments in your newsletter.
It was a very pleasant surprise to come across as I was planning an escape to Bora Bora while on the phone "arm wrestling" with another artist who was hard at work attempting to sabotage their career :-)
In any case, I will conclude by saying that from my experience, management is a game played by rules self created; part entrepreneurial, part motivation, part manipulation, part vision, part smoke and mirrors with daily dosages of both ecstatic joy and unexpected horror.
I recall the great Irving Azoff quote when asked what he felt was the worst thing about management and he replied, "Having to give the artist 80%."
There was a time when I looked at management commission as compensation for relentless effort and results.
As the years went on, I came to see it more as, let's just call it, hazard pay.

Subject: Getting our attention - Collect ZIP CODES Too!
Bob,
Good article on collecting e-mails. Something else that artists overlook - collecting ZIP CODES of fans.
If you have the Zip Codes, you know where your fans are located, can send out tour dates when you are in their area.
You may look at a zip code and perhaps 50 miles within that area you have a couple 100 or couple 1,000 (more successful indie artists) fans.
Send the fans in the designated area an e-mail to see if they would want you to do a house concert or play a local venue.
Let's say you play a venue, it is sold out in advance because you communicated to your fan base. Then call the local radio station and see if they would like to come to the show, introduce you on stage as it gives the local radio station some promotion in front of their fans and just maybe, opens a door to the station for the future - as you are selling tickets in their area.
Have an area of your website - "capture page" that you give a song or two to download to your fans in exchange for the zip code and e-mail.
Then engage with your fans - invite them to join the fan club that can include streaming from your home or studio once a month or whatever works for you. What if we could have done this with our favorite artists years ago - would we have paid to join the artist fan club -- HECK YEA!
ZIP CODES - collect your fans ZIP Codes for shows, fan clubs and merch in the future and oh yea - to sell your music to them too!

I have never had an actor friend who didn't wish he or she was a rockstar...Why? Because actors are in search of a character and musicians are SO brutally real ( at least they use to be...Yes even I who was the kid in big bands in the late 80s and 90s is as old as dirt now).
Most of the great actors I know behind closed doors are bananas ( comedians are even darker).

I couldn't watch Vinyl here in Paris but I played The Mercer Arts Center many times. It was the classiest venue NYC ever had. There were multiple rooms with many bands playing and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest previewed as a play there before it came out as a film. The only booking policy was that you had to be good or original. Sometimes both. Biggest band to break out of there was KISS. The Dolls were huge when they were still unsigned and their show at the uptown Waldorf Astoria Hotel was indeed a true riot. I opened for them at Academy of Music when bassist Arthur Kane's girlfriend tried to cut his thumb off the night before. And at this same time over at Max's Kansas City on Park Ave South everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Bob Marley and myself was playing for pocket-sized crowds. In my opinion the pre-punk early 70's NYC scene was the Golden Age for music in my old hometown...but I'm prejudiced. It was eclectic and accomplished and it paved the way for CBGBs and all that
followed. At least, it seems, they got that right.

I'm a big NY doll's fan since about '73, just a mere mention of them let alone a entire scenario portraying them doing 2 or 3 songs is beyond belief.
They were truly one of the greatest RocknRoll, not rock, bands to ever step on to a stage.
Their influence is immeasurable, so the point being any kudos leaped upon the Dolls is good with me.
They truly were, at the height of their powers, RocknRoll Gods.
Guess you had to be there?

So the daze of Hullabaloo & Shindig are well passed, so is MTV.

This little story might be instructive as it relates to the music industry versus the fictionalized music industry:
In the early 1980's as I was tasting an early measure of success as a music executive (In this case Head of A&R for Epic/CBS Records in Los Angeles) I was asked through corporate channels if I would allow a couple of young Harvard Grad major-studio-attached screenwriters to shadow methrough my work days (and nights) for a week or so. The writers' intent was to gather and absorb what really was going on behind the scenes inthe biz for purposes of some movie they had up their sleeves. I agreed and these fellows did indeed sit in my office all day long, had access tocompany meetings, demo pitches, phone calls with managers, attorneys, publicists, marketing and promotion execs, whatever. Nothing off limits.
Into the evening with me they came. Dinner (wish I could remember where...Le Dome? La Serre? Martoni's? then a few clubs for shows (ditto wish I could remember...Troub? Madame Wong's? The Country Club? Whiskey?). Finally, some courtesy calls to in-studio projects at what certainly would have been The Record Plant (3rd Street) or the Village or maybe the earliest incarnation of Conway. They got to meet some amazing producers and engineers, etc. that night. In those days among them would have been some legends. John Boylan, Tom Werman for sure. Paul Grupp, Mick Gazauski, Ed Cherney, Rose Mann, Chris Stone I would imagine as well. This all would have been a pretty typical - and typically long - work day for me in those days. They saw it all.
Next morning these gents met me back at my office for what I expected would be round two of a few more days of this. They sheepishly thanked me and then said they had what they needed and were going to end their research early. Let me guess, I said. You were expecting coke spoon necklaces, diamond pinkie rings, a bit of heroin, murder threats, hookers, groupies, The Mafia, and fistfights. Right? And all you saw was bunch of people working hard at making music, promoting music, selling music. People talking on phones, sitting at recording consoles. Musicians actually playing their instruments. Artists concerned about hitting the right notes. To their credit, the screenwriters AGREED! Nothing going on - in the world I was able to show them at least - fit the preconceived narrative of their screenplay about The Music Business, even though it WAS The Music Business! Reality had no place in this endeavor.
Now I'm not saying the salacious stuff wasn't around or never happened. And I'm not saying I deserved a Merit Badge for perfect personal conduct in those days. That would be stupid. Some crazy stuff happened. Of courseit did. Just not everywhere, all the time and for everybody. What I hope my tiny tale above points out, and as some of your commenters have already commented, is that the version of the music business in Vinyl is based on a generation's long held fantasy of The Music Business. A fictional framework for an audience who wants their stories to hew to the dramatic narrative they want to believe whether it's true or not. It's more fun that way. Those of us (meaning me, most of your readers and, you, too, Bob) are too close. The actual world of 70's NYC music certainly existed but like so much of the past, it, too, has now become a fantasy.

Don't use my name if you print this, I apologize for the length, I think / hope you'll get a kick out this though.
I'm 46 and online dating came around when I was about 30. I used to tear up OKCupid and JDate and in fact met my lady whom I currently live with on Jdate about ten years ago and we've been serious for almost 8 years. Before that after much experimentation I'd figured out a system that allowed me to meet and bed over 100 women in the course of a six or seven year run. I am painfully socially awkward and very rarely in my life have I ever been able to meet women while being out and about, plus I work in bars and venues and that's the last place I want to be when I don't have to be... so online dating was like a Godsend to me.
I can't tell you how many women I met who lied about their own height / figure / job / likes / dislikes, and who used pix that were years old, showed up on dates looking entirely different than their pix, so it goes both ways. I'm not a great looking guy, at least I don't think so, but I'm well put together and well groomed and all my pix were current. I got really tired very quickly of being "interviewed" for husband material at some pub or bar somewhere.
I began to be able to spot red flags in advance and avoid the obvious ones. I discovered that if a woman only had upper body pix on her profile chances are she's heavy, so eventually I'd skip over that (shallow I know). If she has no pictures of her with friends or family chances are she's a sociopath, and if all of her profile text was poorly written stuff about long walks on the beach and looking for a serious marriage minded man, chances are greater that she'd sleep with me very quickly, but then wind up being a stalker or overly emotional because she felt like if I had sex quickly with her I owed her something. Also "Work Hard and Play Hard" was a huge red flag indicating that she only likes frat guys, muscleheads or is a gold digger. I stopped going on dates with women I met online entirely, opting instead to find a way to either go to their place or have them come to mine. Eventually I only dated women who would come to my place to meet for the first time.
Also I discovered that a woman will NEVER have sex with you after a dinner date because she's full of food and feels fat, so there's no way she will want to be naked or even risk being tempted by making out, plus even if I was super attracted and thought we could have a relationship, the more "dates" we went on, the more power she would have to choose when and whether to sleep with me, which of course is what I was looking for at the time. I discovered I didn't have much patience for courtship.
So I began to look for well written, more poetic, deeper prose, and goofiness and began experimenting with my own profiles, lots of run-on sentences that re-wrote the standard phrases - sure everybody "likes" walks on the beach, but everybody LOVES "the sound of waves crashing while we are feeding gulls French fries and giggling about it while the sun goes down." I began my profile with "Lovable rock n' roll vagabond scamp and secret nerd seeks clever spiritual smartipants for late night pillow talk about life, the universe and everything, and maybe even a few eskimo kisses and glasses of Spanish red wine if we hit it off. Not looking to jump into anything too quickly but open to deep connections that could develop into some kind of "best friends who can't keep their hands off each other" situations."
This clarifies that you are that you are dating around and somewhat choosy without saying it outright. Also everybody says they like red wine, but I like 'SPANISH red wine" which give the impression that I have a discerning taste, which I'd like to think that I do. Plus I never ever mentioned looks / beauty as all women are self-conscious about that. If I reached out to her it's a given that I'm attracted. They know that.
Anyway, bottom line, people want to FEEL SOMETHING when searching online for opposite sex, logic comes later. I got a lot of women who would email me first with stuff like "wow, you are a breath of fresh air" or "why are you still single???"
I know this is long, but in the interest of NOT having to go on drink / dinner dates, I developed a nice rap that I called the "secret agent" rap, which, once I got it honed, got me more than 50% response rate when reaching out, 30% meet rate, and a 20% bed rate after a little flirting for sometimes even less than a week, and I never had to leave my house. So generally for every ten women I wrote or who wrote me online, five of them would respond and generally two of them would sleep with me. Not bad for a socially awkward average looking guy!
"I'd say something like - Hey I know you are getting clobbered with emails from a sea of jackasses, my girlfriends (friends who are girls) tell me they are getting clobbered and sometimes show me the idiots who write them. Wow do I feel for you! Meanwhile you seem like a cool chica, too cool for this website, you must be some sort of a secret agent who lures unsuspecting boys on the interwebs for your nefarious purposes! I'm on to you!"
I made it fun and goofy, and when I'd get their phone number I would start texting them "secret agent 009, what sort of intriguing mission are you up to today?" They'd always play along, and after some text flirting, I knew there was a connection and I would assign them the following mission:
"Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to procure a corkscrew and deliver it to the following location at 20:00 hours on Tuesday evening. Make sure you are not being followed as the location and the mission are TOP SECRET" The location would be my house. They knew that too. The psychology behind it is that if a woman gets you something or does something for you, that's a rationalization that she likes you and the secret mission says you are fun. I had a drawer full of corkscrews by the time I met my current girlfriend!
Some women would balk and insist on meeting for drinks or dinner. I'd tell them I'm really busy, but maybe next week, usually we both would just flake. It was ok because there were always more in the wings.
When they would show up I would answer the door very confidently, invite them in and just tell them "look I know you came to my house, and you probably don't do things like this. I figure we'll pop open a bottle of vino and see if we get along, if you feel uncomfortable you can leave at any time and I will totally understand." I would show absolutely no creepiness or focus on sex, just some wine and convo, and usually within an hour or so if we clicked I'd tell her I'm so relieved that she's not some psycho axe murderer and that she's as cute as her pix. Somewhere in the conversation I would mention a couple of my gold / platinum records of artists I've worked with but I don't want to show them just yet because they are in my bedroom and I don't trust her to not take advantage of me if I show her my bedroom. Eventually we'd make it up there, meanwhile I had Aretha's "Live At The Fillmore" in the CD player and a candle ready to go. By the time it got to "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
I'd ask her to dance, we'd slow dance and I would always let her make the first move, which she would ALWAYS do. Very rarely were these one night stands, they usually resulted in casual dating that would last anywhere from a few weeks to a few years or more.
I know this is totally different than the article in the Times, but similarly to what Birnbaum did, I experimented a LOT until I found the right system, and when I was ready to stop dating around I was in a great position to find someone to love.

I did not meet anyone that worked out online.....but I did meet my current boyfriend at a party and he is 6'5. Funny Bob...he said he would not have dated me if he met me online as he was normally not interested in women that were 5'2 . His minimum was at least 5'6. Too funny really.

I think you hit on the most important part of searching for love. People really don't know what they want. When presented with a list of checkboxes during signup they think they can be super specific and narrow in their search. The reality is a perfect match doesn't exist. As you said its about acceptance.
The punchline to our story is that even though Tracy is 4'11" she had her minimum height set at 5'8". She was the one who made the initial contact which means that if I hadn't changed my height we most likely wouldn't have met.

And some of those tracks are great confections, but if you make music just a bit outside the format you get no airplay, people are unaware of you, but that does not mean they don't hunger for what you're offering.
I've got no idea what Bill Frisell looks like, nor Greg Leisz either. But I can hear the years of practice, the honing of their chops, and their interplay is reminiscent of Duane and Derek on that double album so long ago. A lot slower, with even more soul. I'm sure Eric would love to participate.

YOU ARE SPOT ON ABOUT YEARS OF PRACTICE AND HONING CHOPS. BEING ABLE TO WATCH THEM WORK TOGETHER IN THE STUDIO WITH LU'S BAND WAS ABSOLUTE MAGIC.

"Dust" is otherworldly, hypnotic, you can hear the Americana roots, but the track is not burdened by that moniker. It's just music. Made by people who put sound first, as opposed to revenue.
NO ONE HAS EVER KNOW WHAT CATEGORY TO PUT HER IN, HER ROOTS ARE HER ROOTS BUT YOU'RE RIGHT, SHE JUST PLAYS MUSIC. ANYONE WHO WANTS TO ACTUALLY LISTEN TO HER PAST RECORDS CAN LISTEN ON SPOTIFY, BECAUSE ALL OF HER UNIVERSAL CATLOG IS THERE.
AND YES, YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT -WE DID AND ALWAYS WILL PUT HER SONGS AND THE MUSIC/SOUND FIRST. AND BY THE WAY THIS TRACK IS ONE LIVE TAKE IN THE STUDIO. THE WHOLE ALBUM WAS DONE THAT WAY.

IN REGARDS TO OVERALL SALES, IN THE U.S. HER LAST RECORD, DOWN WHERE THE SPIRIT MEETS THE BONE WILL BE EQUAL TO HER LAST UNIVERSAL RECORD AND DID GREAT IN THE REST OF THE WORLD. THAT WAS A THREE YEAR SPAN IN WHICH THE OVERALL INDUSTRY WAS DOWN, WHAT 30%? AND WE'RE FLAT, SO YOU CALL THAT A 30% LIFT. MORE THAN ANYTHING THAT OVERRIDES THE MESSED UP BUSINESS SIDE. I KNOW I'VE ALREADY GONE ON WAY TOO LONG, BUT I HAVE TO TELL YOU STORY THAT JUST HAPPENED LAST WEEK AT UCLA'S ROYCE HALL SHOW. A FAN'S FRIEND EMAILED AND SAID THAT HIS FRIEND WAS A HUGE LUCINDA FAN AND THAT HE WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE A SERIOUS SURGERY, BUT AGAINST DOCTOR'S ORDERS HE HAD TO SEE LUCINDA ONE MORE TIME IN CASE IT WAS THE LAST TIME. I EMAILED THE FRIEND BACK AND SAID WE WILL LEAVE AFTER SHOW PASSES FOR YOUR FRIEND. HE FREAKED OUT AND GOT AHOLD OF HIS FRIEND. HE CAME BACK AFTER THE SHOW AND HAD A GREAT CONVERSATION WITH LU- HE GOT TO TELL HER HOW MUCH HER MUSIC MEANT TO HIM. IT TURNED OUT HE WAS A REGARDED PSYCHOTHERAPIST. THAT, MY FRIEND, IS THE REAL REWARD.
P.S. I own no stock in Spotify, I receive no remuneration from the company. But I've got to applaud an enterprise that cut down piracy and put all the world's music in one place for one low price. As for its free tier... You can't be much of a music fan if you employ it. You can't pick what you want to hear on your mobile device, and we live in a mobile world of instant access. We just want to know what to listen to. And it turns out that Spotify's algorithm is better than Apple's hand curation, the same way Amazon's recommendation algorithms are better than the human recommenders the company used to employ. That's right, more books were sold by algorithmic recommendation than by human recommendation. Amazon fired all the humans. But we need humans to create art, to play music, and "Dust" demonstrates so much humanity, if only Lucinda and Tom would employ the new means of getting the word out.

John Oliver Wins The Online Derby
Talk about paying your dues...
John Oliver was a second, maybe a third banana on the "Daily Show" until he replaced Jon Stewart when the host was on a hiatus and ended up with his own half hour program on HBO on Sunday night.
This is contrary to the music business, where youth rules and the experienced are thrown over the transom. In music it's the behind the curtain people who are the stars, the producers, the executives...
But on HBO they let the talent run free.
Remind you of anything?
Nothing so much as the Warner Brothers Records of the seventies, history's most legendary label, wherein the biggest stars of the era were allowed to do what they wanted and sales soared, oftentimes not on their first LPs, but their third, fourth or fifth.
All the press is about Fallon.
But it's Oliver who's winning.
But we know the press is a step behind.
But we also know the world is changing, truth is key, honesty and credibility are calling cards. The cardboard stars flog their popcorn projects on Fallon because he's nice all the time. Know anybody like that in real life? I certainly don't. Whereas there are no guests on Oliver's show, no promotional elements, only skewering of the truth via research and presentation.
Research, what a concept.
Oliver's team puts in a better effort than the 24 hour news channel known as Fox, never mind its competitors, who believe what's on screen is the only thing that counts. Roger Ailes is a genius! Hail Caesar!
Hail the man who Trump has tied in knots, the Donald refusing to even debate, and ultimately defeating the handpicked candidates of the Fox, er, Republican, establishment.
Oliver's 22 minute take-down of Trump drew 22 million views on YouTube. (https://goo.gl/Jp7SgF ) While we make it ever shorter, more bite-sized, with more hooks, Oliver is taking the viewers on a journey, thrilling them along the way. "Whipping Post," indeed.
Oliver has 82.2 million online views of his political clips online. Yup, that includes not only YouTube, but Facebook, Instagram, Twitter...
Fallon only has 62.7 million. Colbert 30.7. Kimmel 23.6.
So if you achieve excellence, and have distribution, you can make it.
How many excellent records are being released? Even the superstar product is blah.
But watching Oliver every week stimulates me, I'm riveted as he speaks truth, which I can get nowhere else.
How come every damn act is whoring itself out to corporations but Oliver does not. HBO is the no endorsement platform. People expect truth from HBO, not from records.

Where else can you find a reasoned analysis of the Apple encryption case, which is not so much about the Cupertino company and the government, but hackers.
Where else can you get a techie criticizing failed legislator logic by saying they think "If we can put a man on the moon, well surely we can put a man on the sun."
Our society is changing, BECAUSE of the tools.
That's the story of the year, that tech has taken a back seat, and what it has been utilized for is key.

And if you read the papers, look at the media, you'd believe Oliver is a distant also-ran.
But the truth is he's winning, despite lacking the endless puff pieces and hosannas.
Everything you know is wrong. The Firesign Theatre was right. And if the nitwits in Washington, D.C. believe the rank and file care about getting an anti-abortion, pro-Citizens United Supreme Court justice... Then they still think that people want fewer taxes on the rich so gays can't get married and immigrants can't steal their jobs.
There's the classic Republican position right there.
But homey don't play that no more. Trump doesn't want to cut entitlements, people know the truth...
That they're broke without opportunity.
And you can contradict this all you want, from up on high, but the numbers don't lie, people are gravitating to truth, honesty and the American Way!

Founders
Don't take no for an answer. But when their product is in the marketplace to no acclaim, to little adoption, they pivot.
He who is invested in the present will get lost in the future.
Founders remember when they were broke, what it took to gain traction, managers can do only thus. Which is why Apple is failing under Tim Cook yet burgeoned under Steve Jobs. Jobs remembered working in the garage, hustling... When Steve came back to Apple he was willing to make the big decisions, the big leaps forward, he slimmed the product line, narrowed the focus and went all in on an advertising campaign that satisfied himself, not focus groups. If you're not willing to leave some people out, you will never succeed. Play to somebody, not everybody. Remember when Jobs famously said he was ceding the enterprise to focus on education? Today education is owned by the Chromebook. You must own something or you own nothing. Right now Apple has a huge footprint in mobile phones, but worldwide iOS is dwarfed by Android. Will the next great leap forward come from Apple? Probably not, probably from another outsider with nothing to lose who has pivoted from failure to success. There is no
founder left at Apple, it's to their detriment. There are no founders left at the major record labels, to their detriment. With the roll-up of live entertainment scrappy founders have been eviscerated, centralized buying might do well for the bottom line today, but hampers you in the future, there's no one with their ear to the ground taking chances locally, and concert promotion will always be a local business.
Founders are not hampered by their education. The reason so many successful entrepreneurs never finished college is because college too often puts you in a box, tells you how to think, emphasizes no instead of yes.
Founders have vision, and although they should never stop listening to the input of others, they must make decisions based on their own inner tuning fork. The difference between failure and success is often 1%. Something resonates with the public or not. The founder is the barometer of that 1%, he knows what works and what doesn't. For every story of a label forcing an act to make a hit single, there are tons more of acts defying labels and refusing to cave and ultimately having success. The record company didn't want to put out John Cougar Mellencamp's "American Fool," but he stood his ground and "Hurts So Good" became a huge hit and he can still do good business today. Whereas he who is molded by the man is forgotten tomorrow.
Society tries to make the renegades conform, yet ultimately flocks to the renegades. It's a conundrum, I know. Rubio said what the Republican brass wanted to hear, Trump said what the Republican rank and file wanted to hear. You either work for the man or are the man, make your decision.
Timing is everything. He who goes out on a limb may find his ass on the ground if it's too early, his rewards may be reaped by someone following in his path.
Rule-breakers are excoriated until they are embraced. If you can't handle the hatred, work for the man.
Backward compatibility is a recipe for death. If you're not willing to toss over the past, you will not win in the future. Best example, Microsoft. And if you think owners are bitching because the MacBook only has a USB-C connector, you don't own one.
You're broke, then money comes in hand over fist, then you triumph by working the edges. When someone is working the edges, employing subterfuge and leverage, you know it's time for them to be disrupted, they're too inured to the past, the way things have been done, their profit, to take a risk.
Failure is not a badge of honor because of the loss, but because of the experience. The reason VCs invest in those who have failed is because they've been in the trenches, they've learned lessons. No one likes failure, no one wants to invest in failure, it's not a badge of honor, but it does build character.
Founders are willing to bet the farm, they're all in. They're the crazy people who will bankrupt you, but they're also the people who will make you rich. The most successful artists are the most impossible people.
Founders have incredible insight, incredible powers of analysis. That's what separates the winners from the losers, the ability to see that which no one else can. You're born with some of it, but most you learn through experience and education. It's about putting the pieces of the puzzle together, not knowing just one specific piece, otherwise you're just a cog in their game.
Founders don't fight unwinnable battles. If there's no point of entry, if the odds of success are low, they don't start.
Founders often twist their past experience into a new venture. Simon Cowell didn't burgeon until he took his A&R act to TV. And he triumphed because he didn't change who he was, he didn't sand off his rough edges once he was in the public eye. America hates a phony.
Founders don't tell people what they want to hear, they give them what they need.
A founder knows when to jump to the big time, when to compromise, when to do that deal. He understands that success breeds new opportunities and you must make deals to grow. He who is unwilling to change, unwilling to be expedient, should be avoided at all costs. This sounds like a contradiction, but really it's all just nuance. You've got to stick to your guns on the song, but if it's twenty minutes long you've got to let the label do a radio edit. If you're making money by manufacturing in your basement, you must be willing to source overseas to produce 100 or 1000x cheaper, even if it means ceding some management and ownership functions. We live in a society, and he who needs to function alone forever never wins.
Founders can be assholes, but if they're successful we'll tolerate nearly every personality. But it's very hard to be that successful right out of the gate. People skills are key, but never sacrifice your backbone.
Experienced professionals will tell you you're on the wrong path. But founders can see something they can't. If you're moving forward on sheer passion and desire and everybody else is saying no you're probably not on a path to victory. But if you're playing three-dimensional chess when they can only see two, you've got a chance.

Disruption
Enterprise topples when it does its job too well.
And right now the major labels are doing an exceptional job, especially for themselves.
Forget the old turn of the century construct, that the labels were doomed because of the internet. Turned out when chaos reigns he with the most infrastructure and relationships wins. If you're not on a major, it's nearly impossible to get noticed. And despite recorded revenue being down, most labels now share in ancillary income, from live to merchandise. The labels have adjusted.
By only releasing pop music, that which can instantly sell.
The labels are not stupid, they're helmed by brilliant, experienced gentlemen, who realize the investment in money and manpower it takes to make a hit. So, they've gravitated to only that which will hit. If you make music outside today's hit paradigm, which is primarily pop and urban, you can't get signed.
This blind spot will be the death of them.
The same way it was the death of Geffen Records.
That name is still in use, but the company itself has been eviscerated, because Geffen refused to sign rap. And then rap dominated and the company folded.
Can today's majors fold?
Look at publishing. The inroads made by Kobalt are remarkable. Because Kobalt provides the one thing traditional publishers do not, transparency.
Since inception not only have record labels given artists bad deals, they haven't even paid on those deals. You can't get an accurate accounting, and the deals are written to ensure that you don't. But with Kobalt, you can access all your info on a regular basis.
Transparency is coming to the recorded music side. As well as fairer deals.
But it will require a few outliers to sacrifice their careers for it.
Curt Flood was an exceptional baseball player. But today he's known primarily for opening the floodgates of free agency. Used to be owners made all the money, franchise holders were not bitching about losing cash, the players were indentured servants.
But not after Curt Flood.
Who will sacrifice themselves for the good of today's music industry?
Well, unlike sports, there's no league, the barrier to entry in music is exceptionally low. However the ability to get noticed is nearly impossible.

The majors are not in the incubation business. They want you to prove success before they're interested. But what if you proved success and refused to sign? What if someone opened the floodgates and a bunch of acts poured through.
It will happen.
Because it happened before, many times.
There was the British Invasion, the San Francisco sound, the Philly sound, the Seattle sound, the hip-hop revolution. But each time the winners signed with the majors, what if they don't?
Like I said, the forebears will probably get screwed. But when the leader of a new sound breaks down the walls, a lot of players could come through.
Kind of like in EDM. A scene dominated by indies, Live Nation paid quite handsomely for its foothold in the business. Today that's where outsiders start, live. You generate sales and the big boys come 'a knockin'.
But EDM's penetration into mainstream recorded music has been minimal. Influential, but minimal.
Furthermore, we haven't had a musical revolution this century, just endless refinements of the same damn sounds, pop and hip-hop. Do you think this will go on forever?
Of course not, but the major labels will not institute the change, outsiders will.
The majors have no incentive, they've refined their business practices, they're engines of profit and success.
Whereas startups are engines of starvation, with many blind alleys.
You don't start outside as a supernova, you evolve there, via trial and error. But today's acts don't want to do this, they're inured to the instant rich and famous paradigm, whether it be Bieber or Kardashian, they want some of that. The music is secondary to the celebrity, the Fortune 500 foot the bill.
But chances are the corporations will want nothing to do with the breakthrough artists, who are in it for the music and are not only talented and experienced, but have something to say.
The corporations wanted nothing to do with the Beatles, they were too scruffy...and then everybody wanted a piece.
Major corporations ran from hip-hop, now they embrace it.
If you're looking for instant acceptance, you're not a rule-breaker who will break the hegemony.
An individual has incredible power. A scene can be monolithic.
In the new era the musicians will not listen to the labels, will not collaborate, will not rewrite. That's what the majors now use for insurance. But it sands off the rough edges of art, and it's always the rough edges that hook us. We're looking for originals with a viewpoint, not automatons fronting for old men.
So the founders of the new enterprises will be incorruptible, you will not be able to tell them what to do, both the acts and the companies. And the companies will be more partner than enemy, trust will reign, and transparency will rule.
It's only a matter of getting started.
Tech has been the story in music for fifteen years.
But that story is over. Streaming won, piracy is a non-issue. Sure, data is important, but art cannot be quantified.
Now the focus is on art.
And this is the major labels' blind spot. You expect them to sign you because you're good, not realizing they only want moldable talent in the framework of that which has already hit which will be instantly successful.
The new and exciting is not instantly successful. Personal computers were offered for two decades before most of the public embraced them to participate online, mostly on AOL.
And then...
The software became more valuable than the hardware, internet companies were built, the unforeseeable became real.
The public has no loyalty to the corporation, only the sound. And people are always intrigued by that which is new.
But now, it takes ever longer for the new and different to get traction.
But it will.
And the majors had better watch out.
P.S. The majors could prepare themselves for this by signing that which is innovative and great but not obviously commercial and investing in it over a period of years, accounting fairly all the while, but they won't. They're giant corporations reporting to shareholders, they're beholden to quarterly reports, it's anathema to their business model...but it will be the death of them.

And right now the major labels are doing an exceptional job, especially for themselves.
Forget the old turn of the century construct, that the labels were doomed because of the internet. Turned out when chaos reigns he with the most infrastructure and relationships wins. If you're not on a major, it's nearly impossible to get noticed. And despite recorded revenue being down, most labels now share in ancillary income, from live to merchandise. The labels have adjusted.
By only releasing pop music, that which can instantly sell.
The labels are not stupid, they're helmed by brilliant, experienced gentlemen, who realize the investment in money and manpower it takes to make a hit. So, they've gravitated to only that which will hit. If you make music outside today's hit paradigm, which is primarily pop and urban, you can't get signed.
This blind spot will be the death of them.
The same way it was the death of Geffen Records.
That name is still in use, but the company itself has been eviscerated, because Geffen refused to sign rap. And then rap dominated and the company folded.
Can today's majors fold?
Look at publishing. The inroads made by Kobalt are remarkable. Because Kobalt provides the one thing traditional publishers do not, transparency.
Since inception not only have record labels given artists bad deals, they haven't even paid on those deals. You can't get an accurate accounting, and the deals are written to ensure that you don't. But with Kobalt, you can access all your info on a regular basis.
Transparency is coming to the recorded music side. As well as fairer deals.
But it will require a few outliers to sacrifice their careers for it.
Curt Flood was an exceptional baseball player. But today he's known primarily for opening the floodgates of free agency. Used to be owners made all the money, franchise holders were not bitching about losing cash, the players were indentured servants.
But not after Curt Flood.
Who will sacrifice themselves for the good of today's music industry?

"Someone Else" Emitt Rhodes

This should not be good.
In an era where our greatest living artists can't even see the target, never mind hit the mark, what are the odds a has-been, a barely was, would be able to strike a bullseye?
Well, maybe not quite. But he's close.
And it's positively revelatory.
We boomers live in the past, because our favorites seem to have lost the plot, Sir Paul keeps putting out music, but we stopped listening long ago. Ditto on Stevie Wonder, even Paul Simon. They had too much success, eyes are upon them, they're paralyzed, they seem to have lost the ability to channel God.
And that's what great songwriting is. Evidence of humanity. The artist is channeling pure emotion. He or she locks into something that makes the hair on our arms stand up straight. Forget the actors, it's the musicians we are truly in love with, because they illustrate our lives for us.
"When you tell someone you care a lot
Prepare yourself for a broken heart"
You think it's different when you age, that you're no longer a teenager, that you know what you're doing, you're not insecure, but then you get a crush on someone and cannot sleep, they're all you can think about. Can you tell them? Can you even approach them?

You'll feel so small, be so afraid"
The sound is akin to Stephen Stills's "4 + 20," quiet and intimate, as if no one is listening but you. Your brain opens up, you're suddenly in touch with your thoughts and your emotions.
Because it's life and life only.
And even though you're wiser through experience, you still know so little. You drive a sedan, not a compact. You might even own a house. You invest in appearing together, but you're still at loose ends, and the more you've got, the less you're willing to risk.

And you just can't make no sense of it"
Go around the block enough and you can see the flaws, see the reasons for not getting involved, you can control your emotions, only you cannot. You're infatuated.

It's for you to guess, for her to know"

You start to wonder, if she's not interested in being with you, is she interested in being with someone else? Got to be. Because you're madly in love, can't she see it in your eyes?

I was just discussing this with my shrink today, I don't like to compete. If everybody else wants it, I don't even go after it. If anybody else is interested in her I won't make a move. I'm inured to losing. The brass ring has eluded me. I don't feel capable, I don't feel desirous...but none of this undercuts the twisting, turning feeling eating up my insides.

Experience. It keeps you down. We accumulate wounds and shoot for the middle at best, we no longer expect things to work out. That's for the youngsters and the winners, the rich and famous paraded in front of us in the media.
Music is supposed to be youthful, aging is anathema in America.
Then how come this guy who never won is getting it so right, singing about the human condition of the sixtysomething, whilst his compatriots with success can only cover hits from the past, looking to stay in the spotlight.
Defeat will get you down. Emitt Rhodes had some airplay, got some accolades, but he made no money, got no ubiquity, bitter he retreated to his home in Hawthorne. And with the burgeoning of the web we all found out he was down there, accessible, but he was not the same guy, he was old, he was fat, he was no longer cute, it was all too creepy.
Kind of like Brian Wilson. An automaton paraded in front of the public so they can remember what once was. He can neither write nor play, never mind sing. So what are the odds Emitt Rhodes can?
"I like her so much, it makes me ill
And it makes no sense, and it never will"
I had a crush on a girl for two years. Back at the turn of the century. She'd send me e-mail, I'd respond and receive nothing in return. Was she just not interested? She was so present, so intimate when we saw each other face to face.
I realized she was an inveterate social climber, flawed in more way than one, but when I see her name in my inbox my heart still skips a beat.
"I wish I may, I wish I might
I must be wrong, I can't be right"
A bridge? It's like today's artists lost the playbook, the bible, even though all the hits of yesteryear are online to sample. Songwriting... It didn't used to start with the beat, but the changes. And those changes hooked us to the point we could not stop listening.

I must be crazy, shouldn't I know better than this"
You're no longer wet behind the ears, you've had so much experience, you've been in this exact same place before...
But you can't control your emotions.
But too much music evidences machines as opposed to humanity, imitating tech, trying to be perfect.
And in the middle the song rocks hard, but at the end it twinkles again.
WHAT WAS THAT?
I knew Emitt Rhodes had a new album, I saw a story in the "Wall Street Journal," I made a mental note to check it out.
But I didn't.
But then today I was stimulated, surfing a site that reminded me of him.
So I went on Spotify and saw his mug, reinforcing that this was gonna be a disaster, a failed attempt, a coda to sully my memories of being elated by "With My Face On The Floor," spreading the word on the insight of "Love Will Stone You."
But you'll come down.
That's the following line. That's how love is, after the high comes the lows.
But the opening cut, "Dog On A Chain," was good. It had the exact same sound from way back when, but with a modern vision. Rhodes had not had plastic surgery on either his face or his soul, he was singing from where he was today. Hell, "Dog On A Chain" was about divorce, how you feel after the kids are gone as well as the wife, when the house is no longer yours.
"You ain't no good I hear her say
Under her breath as she turns away"
It's the women who are over you first. They ate your act up in the beginning, were supportive so long, and then...
They're no longer interested, you haven't changed, but they have. Your act no longer works, there's nothing you can do to get them back.
What kind of person sings this stuff?
Someone who grew up when music was all about personal expression, who remembers when you didn't conform but went on your own journey.
And I'm sampling the tracks. And they're all good. They hearken back to what once was, but they're not set in amber.
And then I hear "Someone Else."
It's quiet and intimate, so personal, I'm positively stunned.
It's like the labels are irrelevant, all the commercialism, all the endless tech talk.
This guy in the South Bay who paid his dues once has not eradicated his mind, is not a has-been lamenting what could have been, all these years his brain has still been working, he's been ready for his comeback.
But unlike those putting out endless albums that require one listen at best, he truly HAS!
I'm not telling you "Rainbow Ends" is perfect. But if you remember what once was you'll be positively stunned at this update.
Some stories stick, some don't.
The fake Rodriguez story got traction, he toured after the movie to utter boredom.
But who cares about a failed alcoholic who hasn't recorded for forty years?
Turns out I do.
And you will too.
