musical.ly
Unfortunately you can't, welcome to the new world of haves and have-nots, you thought information was gonna be free forever, but it's not, you're gonna pay if you want it, and that's gonna boil it down to the informed and uninformed, and forget about politics, if you want to know about trends, what's going on in business, you've got to pay, sorry.
That's what content companies don't understand. It's an evolution. Get them hooked, then close the doors, you're gonna make more money than ever before. But only a few companies in each vertical will sustain. And in news, it takes infrastructure, which is not easy to replicate, the HuffPo is a shadow of what it once was, even though it's better, and BuzzFeed actually has gravitas, but in the world of social media...
It's about innovation. For all the scuttlebutt about the power of Facebook, if it didn't buy WhatsApp and Instagram it would be struggling now, kinda like Apple, why does everybody always look at today instead of tomorrow?
Musical.ly is looking at tomorrow, Generation Z.
This is not for you, for old farts, this is for kids with more time than you, who are still figuring out their place on the social stratum, who are unafraid of taking a risk, making fools of themselves.
So basically, you post a video of yourself to a short musical clip.
Doesn't sound so revolutionary in concept, I've been tracking the story for over a year, sifting through the e-mail, because overhype is rampant and trends frequently don't last, but when I read about John Janick getting his acts involved, and Jason Derulo, when I saw the impact of these videos, I decided to check the app out.
And it is an app. Just like an older generation never knew a world without computers, without the internet, the youngest generation never knew a world without smartphones. You parents can bitch and moan, say your kid doesn't need one (doesn't DESERVE ONE!) but without a smartphone you're disconnected, not part of the firmament, never mind the discussion.
And for all the hogwash about the downside of technology, whose fires are stoked by the ancient intellectuals in the "New York Times," most of what technology brings is good, hell, did you see that article in the "Wall Street Journal" extolling the virtues of Kindles, especially the new Oasis? The writer said he'd never go back to print, and one day the publishers will wake up and see they've made a mistake, after all the Luddites buying physical books disappear.
Now musical.ly is not like Snapchat, there's very little learning curve.
And it's not like Facebook, where you boast about what you've done.
Nor Instagram, where you fake it for pictures.
No, musical.ly is all about the here and now, about making a video and posting it instantly. You almost want to participate, until you realize you'll never be that skinny, and your aged body can't take the workout.
It's riveting, to see what these kids come up with. And you instantly see beneath the surface, wanting to become a neighborhood (national, INTERNATIONAL!) star, the passing of information, which is so fast these days.
And then you look at the chart. And realize this could be the most important one in musicdom, even more important than the vaunted Shazam, this is what kids are listening to right now, kids who may or may not have a streaming music service, this is where hits are being BUILT!
And the categories are simple to divine. Popular, Song Chart and Leaderboard. Kids are involved, it's a community, with stickiness.
"Sensor Tower's data suggest that on average people spend more than three minutes in Musical.ly every time they open the app (compared with roughly two minutes on Instagram and 85 seconds on Snapchat) and that users are spending more than 15 minutes on Musical.ly each day (compared to more than 22 minutes on Facebook)."
I don't think musical.ly stars are forever, hell, I don't even think musical.ly is forever! This is one thing the straight media gets wrong, believing that acts can translate their success from one vertical to another, from social media to Hollywood. Sure, they've got fame, but so does that guy who roller skates and plays his guitar on Venice Beach, fame is not enough, especially today, when you're lucky if it last 15 minutes, and your talent is this, making musical.ly clips, not acting, not writing scripts, not supporting television shows, you overwork yourself to make coin, and then you're broke down and busted, sitting on the side of the street. As for musical.ly itself, what we've seen in the past ten years is a succession of social networks, there's always another cool one, one that captures the fancy of children, most of them are fads, and there are so many, but musical.ly is based on music, CHECK IT OUT!
"The Social Media Platform That Has Gen Z Obsessed - Musical.ly has captured the attention of the millions of teens who post videos on the platform - and now its influence is rippling through the music industry": http://on.wsj.com/2zwNT7J

Hey, Western Union Man
Been one of those days, my computer speakers blew up, now what? That makes three dead sets on my desktop. And the manufacturers of all of them have gone out of business. Do I spend a lot, the internet seems to recommend Audioengine, or do I go for cheapies, those JBL clear ones for $160, or maybe sequence to Sonos Ones, but that'll be good for Spotify, but not everything.
The night before was wonderful.
Coran Capshaw was being honored by the City of Hope. And although the entertainment was Trey Anastasio and Dave Matthews, nobody listened. And although the food included sushi, it seemed like nobody ate, everybody was so busy TALKING! It was like a reunion, people from across the country you see once a year, or once every couple of years, we caught up, talked about Trump and Weinstein, I coulda stayed there all night. Actually, I did, just about closed the place.
And I was so revved up I could not fall asleep. I don't know about you, maybe you're integrated, but not me, most of the time I'm alone in front of a computer screen, and to tell you the truth I don't want to hang with most people, but there are certain environments that are so satisfying and rewarding I could stay there forever, like summer camp, like that month in Mammoth, like last night.
So I've been in a fog all day. And my Fridays are now like college Fridays. You remember those... You'd stay up late, 3 or 4, playing records, getting high, getting drunk, and although I do neither of those anymore on Fridays I stretch out, I rarely get to bed before 3, which is to say I read two days of papers through and through and found out the kneeling has had no effect on the NFL, they studied it, ratings are down because there's too much football, but no more in red states, which you'd expect, and although I read this in the WSJ, it's amazing how the scuttlebutt is wrong, all the bloviators on TV, and then I read about the Netflix ratings, which are inherently inaccurate, since they don't include tablets and phones, but "Stranger Things" is a smash, let me look it up, 15.8 million people watched the initial episode the first three days, 4.6 million watched the entire series last weekend, and that shows the power of programming, a hit, that's as much as the "Walking Dead," as many as "Game of Thrones."
And then I watched Bill Maher, which is depressing because political comment seems to have no effect, the Republican party has rallied around Trump, fearful of being primaried, and then I went out for a hike, just shy of midnight, it was cloudy, yet bright, because there's a full moon, and it's cooling down, a SoCal November, which means it's hovering around 60, and then I walked in the door and took out my contacts, which for some reason were foggy, and on Spotify I heard...
"Hey, Western Union Man."
I'm shuffling all my tracks, it's pretty fascinating. And the last time I wrote about this was when I discovered the original by Jerry Butler on XM, but the version that hooked me was on Al Kooper's initial solo LP, "I Stand Alone."
Al not only played the organ on "Like A Rolling Stone," he formed Blood, Sweat & Tears, and got kicked out of his own band, which then went on to monster success with his formula, but the irony is no one ever plays that album anymore, fans just spin the original, "Child Is Father To The Man," which is spectacular, and it's this formula that's employed on "I Stand Alone."
The flourish on the Butler original is strings, but on Kooper's take of "Hey, Western Union Man," it's horns, the track starts with a flourish right out of Philadelphia, kinda like "Rubberband Man," BUT THAT CAME AFTER!
It's like you're at a castle, but the king is hip, the trumpeteers are part of an ensemble, they're wearing uniforms, but not military, they're infected by the sound, they're not standing still, they're swaying with the music, you can only stand at attention.
"Oh, Western Union Man
Send a telegram"
That's right, now it's just for moneygrams, but it used to be the quickest way to send a message, the e-mail of its day.
"This is what I want you to do
I want you to tell her that I'm all alone"
The scourge of humanity, it'll keep you in a bad relationship, it'll have you hanging with boring people, because staring at the four walls can drive you to suicide.
"And if a telegram don't do
Send a box of candy too
And maybe some flowers
Tell her that I missed her for hours and hours"
That's lyric writing. The twists and turns, the image, the compactness.
And, as Lou Reed said politically incorrectly back in '72, the colored girls sing...
SEND A TELEGRAM
SEND A TELEGRAM
They don't make 'em like this anymore, this sound isn't even replicated, a sound you'd hear in nightclubs, with big bands, Steely Dan goes out with a horn section, but no one else wants to pay, but the horns put the whole thing over the top.
And after the flourish of the chorus, with everybody wailing, the whole thing breaks down, just a bass, and Al testifying, right in the middle of the number, and then...
"Listen to me...
Tell me have you got a boy you can send
This is what I want him to do
Put him on his bike right away
And see if he can get my message through
Date it tomorrow
But mail it today
I want the girl to know that I miss her
Something like yesterday"
Nobody even knows about mail anymore, the Post Office is for junk and Amazon on Sunday, but you used to live for what came in the box.
And the hook is that chorus...all about sending a telegram, and just when you're wishing for it, that horn flourish comes back and there's literally a telegraph beeping in the track, literally everything, including the kitchen sink, has been included, all you can do is jump up and jive, thrusting your arms in the air, willing her to come back.
That's the power of music, it's why women are drawn to musicians, how do they come up with this, how do they lay this sound down, a sound that has yet to come back.
Greta Van Fleet is bringing back rock, but no one seems to be bringing back the big dance bands, all we're left with is records, deejays, and it's just not the same.
"Do you hear what I say?"
I bought Al Kooper's solo LP because I loved Blood, Sweat & Tears that much. I was a white boy in the suburbs, in an era of experimentation after the British Invasion had started to fade, but the truth is there were people older than me who'd experienced history and knew the greatness of these soul tracks.
Like "Hey, Western Union Man."

"Hot sauce really doesn't have nutritional value. It's vinegar and peppers for God's sake. What did you expect? Why are you even trying to determine the nutritional value of hot sauce? Just enjoy it!
Unlke you, I love The Offspring. Props to Rock and Roll Peg Pollard for putting "Self Esteem" on Rock 102 San Diego back in the day, long before any station knew who the hell they were. We had them on Rockline with the late great Bob Coburn. Great band! Great hot sauce. Viva Dexter!

Bob, like you I was a Tobasco fiend. I have all the flavors but red is my
fave of the bunch. I also have a collection of hot sauces and I love
habanero. However, over a year ago I got hooked on Siracha Hot Chili
Sauce. It has replaced all hot sauces for me. However, I will always put
a drop of Tobasco on my oysters. You can put this stuff on anything and
it will make it great. The flavor is better and deeper, less vinegar, more
texture (it replaces ketchup)When I want more hotness, I just add some
Trader Joe?s Habenero sauce. Anyway, try it, put it on your eggs,
sandwiches, pizza, hummus, whatever. You will thank me! Just look for the

If you haven't, get to a Bristol Farms or Sprouts and try Lucky Habanero salsa. It's that good. Their regular is good and has a kick, and the Dragon Lips version takes it to another level. Family owned, and delicious. In fact, I am taking a break after this to drive to Bristol Farms to get some!
We're more of a Tapatio family than Cholula, but it has its place. Have several other reco's if you like on hot sauces. Just stay away from Dave's Insanity Sauce - all the heat, none of the flavor.

Brother Bru Bru's African Pepper hot sauce is The One. (The original; not the concessional milder stuff or chipotle variants that were late in the game).
Brother Bru Bru himself was Bruce Langhorne. Studio musician (notably on Bob Dylan records in the NY era) and arguably the titular inspiration for "Mr. Tambourine Man." While that song is clearly not about any particular individual in a narrative sense, Langhorne was known as the character running around Greenwich Village with a wagon-wheel sized tambourine.
Bruce succumbed to kidney disease recently. This disease that took him inspired the hot sauce, however. He liked hot sauce but couldn't find one he liked that was salt-free. So he made his own.
It's the stuff.
Best,
Andrew

i really enjoyed your hot sauce tips!
here's one right back at ya...
i think this is a great spice product to use for people who don't like immense heat.
it is called NANAMI TOGARASHI or seven spice. it has a 2 types of pepper, some
seaweed, some orange peel, black and white sesame seeds and ginger.
it comes from japan where people like a bit of zip and not massive heat. in context, you would put this on
a ricebowl dish or in ramen or udon.
a few shakes gives a pop, 10 shakes gives a bit of heat.
i always carry a bottle in my stuff or in my inside jacket pocket.
blandness comes into life in odd places and you don't want to be unprepared!!

Tabasco is a thin vinegary hot sauce. It is good on oysters. But it is not good on Mexican food.
Sadly, in many chain Mexican restaurants, Tabasco has marketed their way in, so you can't get Cholula or even Tapatio, which is close to Cholula. Luckily in LA (which is, of course, part of Mexico) you can usually always find it.
But Tabasco is not hearty enough for Mexican cuisine. You want a Cholula or a Valentina (I saw this sauce more often in Mexico than Cholula).
Sometimes, though, you can ask the waiter to ask the kitchen if they have any Cholula. The cooks usually have some for their own use.
Gonna try Dexter's sauce. Thanks.

Yes!!!
The green sauce is amazing!
I was working at The Warehouse in Vancouver (Bryan Adams' studio) and one of the assistants brought it over to me. I flipped. They said you gotta tell Bob Rock, who was working downstairs, apparently he's got a relationship. So I got to meet Bob Rock and he had them send me a case that arrived by the time I got back to NYC. I phoned them up to say thanks, couldn't have been nicer.
I wouldn't eat eggs without the green for a year. And yes, the other two are just ok.
Love the letter!

Try Lindy?s Taco Sauce Bob!
I was born and raised in Whittier, CA and my Mom ONLY bought Lindy?s.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071K7ZP67/ref=cm_sw_r_fa_dp_t2_TbrDzbDDQGJ59
LINDY'S PREMIUM Red Taco Sauce originates from the kitchens of
restaurateur Erlinda "Lindy" Jaime, a pioneer of the Mexican food craze in
Southern California. Her extraordinary taco sauces are classics, as rich
in tradition as they are in flavor. The perfect complement to all your
favorite dishes. Buen Apetito!
Lindy's red sauce is coveted in my family. I grew up with it. Most of us
migrated away from Southern California and quickly realized we were only
able to find it in one grocery store (Stater Bros) that is only in
Southern California.
Whenever one of us goes home to visit we stock up and bring it back for
the rest of the family. Last time I went I filled almost an entire
suitcase with the stuff.... at least 20 bottles bubble wrapped so they
wouldn't break on the plane.
Knowing it is now available for purchase on here makes my heart and
stomach happy. Granted, $10 a bottle is obscenely expensive. It's only a
couple dollars in Stater Bros.

On your recommendation I will try Dexter's sauce but my favorite green hot sauce is El Yucoteco. Fair amount of kick.

Also, if you like spice with flavor check out Chile Crunch. This is not a hot sauce. It's red pepper chile flake and garlic cooked down in oil, so it likes chile oil with crunch. This can go on EVERYTHING! This stuff will change your life.

Since I left California I've had trouble finding decent Mexican food and try nearly every place I see.
The salsa in the restaurants here sucks. So I make my own at home.
But there was one place, in downtown Norfolk, VA, called (strangely enough), California Burrito. My first thought was "Yeah. Sure.". But I went in anyway and not only did they have great burritos, they had their homemade VERDE hot sauce...which was top drawer. I'm not a big fan of green sauce either. And this shit is great on everything. Including Chicken AND Tuna salad. (Which, historically, requires Texas Pete...which is ubiquitous here).
I just noticed I have a few medium shakes left in the bottle.Time to head back to Norfolk.
Scott Sechman
P.S.:
There was one really good Mexican place in downtown Roanoke, VA. It's the only place I've seen here that has a salsa bar and it was extensive. Too bad it's 300+ miles away.

I love me some hot sauce so ok i'll bite and i agree with tabasco. The fact they age it gives it that extra pop that other hot sauces don't have. No to be a shill but there's a local brand here in Baltimore called Huckle's. All hand made, local, artisanal and all the buzzwords. Anyways, the long and short of it is their late-harvest jalapeno sauce is great. I'd put it up against anything (other than tabasco). I also just look for stuff to put it on. Anyways, if you're interested, i'd happily send you a bottle, because you can't buy it online yet (and i am not affiliated with these guys, i just love hot sauce).

What a perfect brand name! "Gringo Bandito" First off there are Holland's blond tresses on the label. But more significantly is the nod (perhaps unintentional) to the fact that since 1967 gringos have come to believe that "bandito" is the Spanish word for bandit. It's not. It's the Italian word for bandit. But "bandido" doesn't rhyme with "Frito" and language rudiments don't count for anything in marketing.
That said, I'm going to add a bottle of Gringo Bandito green to my condiment shelf and many thanks for the heads up and enjoy what I hope is Holland's two-part joke on the label as well as the contents.

Hey there Bob,
We have never met--my name is Nick. Reading your hot sauce email was so funny and unintentionally related to what's going on in my life right now--I'll explain.
I recently signed a deal w Sony/RCA for a song of mine called Hotspice. A month ago, one of the marketing team guys suggested we do a Hotspice hot sauce for promotion stuff, (and because, who doesn't love hot sauce). So now that the deal is closed, we are going to speak to Sony's product manager and make it a reality--super hyped!
Just finding it so funny that I received both hot sauce emails at the same time and wanted to share that. I'm no celebrity--and I'm not even sure if anyone will want to buy our hot sauce, but I am confident that help the song in some weird way. If you'd like, I will mail you a bottle if and when the hot sauce gets made.

Thanks, Bob, I ordered, have never tried, but always look forward to checking out a new salsa.
I'm your age and a salsa junkie since moving to Colorado for school and discovering Huevos Ranchero (flour tortillas only) for hangover mitigation.
I was into the reds for most of these years, used to make my own and moved through various high end gourmet favorites over the years.
But, in the last few years its the greens that really turn me on.
I have 2 gotos to add to your list if you haven't tried.
The pour-on table sauce a la tabasco or perhaps Dexters that I love is El Yucateco.

The jar salsa that I mainline - have even poured in cocktails - is Mrs. Renfro's Green Salsa. Now I've tried a couple dozen green salsas and enjoy most, but this one is orgasmic. Bob: Totally second your comments on Hamilton in LA. I've seen it twice and my wife Cathy has gone four times including this past Sunday night. We play the music all the time. It's so perfectly timed for what's happening in this country today. By the way, I bought "Hair" in previews in New York and brought it to LA where it played for several years at the Aquarius Theater on Sunset (now the Nickelodeon). That show was perfectly timed for 1967-69 with it's hippy cast and anti-Vietnam theme. I have incredible memories and stories from producing that.

?Hole in one, Bob. I'm a mother of three in the UK, one working in the music business, one on an Andrew Lloyd Webber scholarship at Arts Educational Schools (Musical Theatre), the youngest reading Drama and English Literature at Exeter University. When my son and younger daughter were still with the South London Youth Theatre, they became huge fans of Lin Manuel Miranda and 'In the Heights'. Then news reached them of 'Hamilton'. Within a week, the entire company - kids aged 14 to 18 - had memorised the musical, and started doing impromptu versions of some of the songs. It became their obsession. None of them was that interested in American history. They could barely give a toss about British history. But something about the concept, the whiplash lyrics, the music, the stance of the piece got under their skin. It has been extraordinary to watch its effect on them.
We would have gone to New York to see it, but who could get tickets. So the kids signed up for priority booking for the London run, and we joined the lottery last Christmas. We were lucky enough to bag four tickets at normal prices, in decent seats, in a London theatre which is still being rebuilt after 'Billy Elliot'. We see it in January. I have been a parent for 29 years, and I have never known a single obsession like it. The kids begin to weep with excitement at mere mention of the fact that the date is now looming. The anticipation is tsunamic.?
I couldn't be more familiar with the songs, ?having spent the past couple of years listening to kids going mad for them. I am no hysterical fan myself, having spent my earlier life on the road with artists from McCartney to Elton to Madonna and Michael Jackson. But there's a tremor in the bones that reminds me this is different, and life-changing. We know that we will leave with no doubt in our minds that musical theatre has been changed forever; that it's not now 'all about' the jukebox genre, and that punters will no longer take a risk on songs they've never heard and might not like. Lin Manuel Miranda has achieved a remarkable and irreversible thing. He has challenged stereotypes, invited the world to open its eyes, hearts and ears, and has proved that 'everything' HASN'T 'been done' before.

I wonder if I would have made time for this if my son hadn't insisted. Of course he was turned on through a buddy of his. Sure they roared. It's about time we all roared together. Diane and I saw this two years ago with the original cast and paid a scalper's ransom for the nosebleed seats and it was worth every penny. Changed my whole outlook on rap as a delivery system and an art form. Wait till you start hearing tissue paper and cheeseburgers hawked behind rap lyrics!
But the American history. The educational possibilities with jaded kids in urban schools, mathematics, you name it.
Lin Miranda is from another planet...and it's called earth. The Invasion came from within and it's right on time. Thanks for rekindling the fire I had when I came out of the theater Bob. I wish I could drag every lily white, country classic metal rock bumpkin I know to this show to open their minds. It's like an acid trip and makes us look inside! Putting in the soundtrack CD now!

The minute I heard the Hamilton soundtrack, five songs in, I realized this was the greatest piece of artwork created in my lifetime. I'm an entertainment attorney in practice for almost three decades and a self-professed musical theater geek. I don't say this lightly. What has impressed me more than anything was that when Miranda was writing it, Obama was president and at the beginning of that hopey, changey time. Miranda, most likely, did not foresee that this work of art would be the voice of the Resistance. But it is. It is the story of how we rose up and beat back a monarchy. How we fought for the freedom of immigrants, minorities and "others". And if people listen closely, they will know that the world sometimes turns upside down, but we can right it.
Oh...and if you didn't know, Miranda is a big fan of the hilarious podcast "My Brother, My Brother & Me" and incorporated a couple of references from that podcast into the soundtrack. Yet another reason why he's a treasure!

Yknow, I always enjoy Kid Rock's Stern interviews. Every time I come away with the same conclusion: "I like the guy. He seems cool, he puts on a great show; it's a shame I don't like his music, but 'two outta three ain't bad'".
I actually read your take on it before I got to hear it (something I usually try to avoid; just like a movie I'm really interested in, I try to avoid knowing too much about it before I go to the theater) and based on your Letter I figured I'd enjoy this one as much (or more) than any of the previous ones. But I gotta say, this time around he came across like a real asshole. The arrogance ("Man, read a book"...as if Howard should assume we already all know how many tattoos he has?), the stupidity (he obviously just learned the word "narrative"), the ignorance (the NYT is "gay"? Look, say you don't like it, but what kind of jackass would use that word to describe it in 2017?). The showboating while he mangled "Ramble On", almost as if he was giving us a gift?...it was so embarrassing it made ME uncomfortable.
It seems like he's gone backwards. Maybe this was the "real Kid Rock" all along; he certainly talks like he's over trying to pretend like he cares. And he certainly doesn't have to. But for the first time ever I freaking hated the guy. It was hard to finish the interview. I questioned if it was my personal politics getting in the way, but no, they aren't news to me. He was unbearable.
Love you (and The Letter)!

He's dabbled in rock, country, rap, and hip hop with varying degrees of chart success and has collaborated widely and creatively with a variety of musicians, earning their respect. He was also a pioneer at fighting scalpers and offered low-dough tour shows that directly benefited his fans and helped build a true bond with his audience. He's stepped up big for veterans and has traveled the world to entertain our troops. On the business side under the tutelage of Punch Andrews, he was an early believer in controlling his catalog and songwriting which has rewarded him handsomely. Back home in Michigan, he's a guy who puts his money to work on a local level in a state where that matters. Underneath his scruffy and occasionally polarizing exterior beats the heart of an artist and a man who cares.

The first time I saw Kid Rock was at a Govt Mule show at The Beacon. I hadn't been a fan of the media persona erected about him. He walked out to Warren (Haynes) shook his hand and then sang my favorite live version of "Cant You See" ever. A year later I caught a show in Atlanta. He is like a party with many appetizers. Some you gobble up and some you take a bite of and fold the uneaten part in the cocktail napkin. A year or so after that I banged into him at the Sky Club in Atlanta and we both got shook up. He took my bag and held my arm and walked me to a chair. We both took a minute. I thanked him and introduced myself. He sai "I'm Bob. You Kay? Yup. But I'd be much better if he sang a bar or two of "Cant You See". Man looked me straight in the eye and said "Beacon?" I said I'd converted that night. He said something like I didn't look like a Mule fan and I said u didn't think he looked like an accountant. My husband saw him at The Fontanel a few weeks ago. Said it was outstanding. He's a good man who puts his money where his mouth is and he is direct and smart and deeply empathetic and compassionate.

It's not Trump that's going to win him re-election. It's the people who are opposed to him. What a hateful, repugnant bunch of spoiled babies the left has become. Every time another story about how someone is "outraged" about a big nothing (like Kid Rock or some of his, let's face it, inconsequential, antics), I say to myself, "Awesome. There's another thousand votes against the left (read: Trump)."

Won't lie Bob. I have zero feelings towards Kid Rock. Love and/or hating the guy seems like a waste of time. I enjoy some of his music but I've never downloaded it. Similarly I would never go out of my way to listen to his stuff. Meh. He's meh. Like so many these days, the internet just makes it easier to reach that conclusion.
Ambivalence. The worst word for any artist.
Thanks for your letters. You've not reached "meh" yet.

Obviously you have never been to a Kid Rock concert. It is more like a cover band concert he has so little original music of his own.
He gets the crowd going by using his divisive talk and telling everyone to fuck off. From single moms (stop having babies)(never mentioning maybe the guys should step up) to not wanting to pay to help someone who needs help because you know they all are just milking the system. As he uses every swear word available then says we should be able to call Him by his name. I guess this is where he brings in the religion angle. Sad so many follow him and his divisive talk.
He was not kidding when he said he would run. He was not able to stand the kick back he got. Under all the I am tough talk, he is not.
I work at an arena and watched 5 Kid Rock concerts. His fans are all drunk and the arena is full of pot smoke. He fills up arenas because his tkts are cheap, I give you that, only way he can fill it up.

Dexter Holland's Hot Sauce
We never ate hot sauce when I was a child, it was not a thing, food was bland, vegetables were boiled and my taste buds were fresh. But as I've aged I've required a little zest to spice up my food. As a matter of fact, I employ Tabasco each and every day, usually with Bob's Market's chicken salad.
That's right, the market is named after me! And before Santa Monica outlawed plastic bags I had a plethora of name brand merchandise! And I never ate chicken salad, hell, it was years before I even ate tuna salad! I'd sneer when my mother made it. I was all about fried bologna, I even ate fried eggs back then, even though I won't touch the progeny of chickens in any recognizable form these days (unrecognizable is cool, especially in ice cream!) But as I've gotten older I've become more experimental, hell, there's little I won't eat other than eggs and liver, I've got to have sea urchin with a quail egg at every sushi bar, the weirder the better, and I'm burning out on so many of my staples, but not Bob's chicken salad.
Really, what they're selling is meat. Bob's is all about the butcher shop. But not only do I not cook, I don't know how to! I no longer go out for every meal, but I buy prepared stuff. And Whole Foods is expensive but bland. And Gelson's is expensive and good, but geographically inconvenient. So I'm left with Bob's.
So I decided to try the chicken salad.
I don't want too much mayonnaise. But Bob's is thick, mostly chicken. Bob's chicken salad is almost like eating a breast. Whereas everybody else's is some gooey mess and...
The point is I cannot burn out on Bob's chicken salad.
But I only eat it with hot sauce, without it it's too bland.
Oh, not too bland for the hoi polloi, but for my aged taste buds, and I've come to need that Tabasco zest in order to be satiated, in order to survive.
Yes, Tabasco. Mostly traditional red. Very occasionally green. And I keep a bottle of chipotle around, but I've got a love/hate relationship with it. And speaking of Chipotle, you've got to listen to Guy Raz's podcast "How I Built This" with Steve Ellis, the founder of the chain bearing that name. I once got sick from Chipotle, but this makes me want to go back, I like this guy. (http://www.npr.org/podcasts/510313/how-i-built-this)
Anyway, out of the blue Jim Guerinot sends me a sampler of Dexter Holland's hot sauce.
Dexter Holland... I'm not the biggest Offspring fan. But I respect him, for not being a nitwit. He has a Ph.D., right? And I know he flies Guerinot to Telluride in his jet. He's a renaissance man.
But I'm sick of brand extensions. Just because you're famous that doesn't mean I should be interested in, never mind buy, the products outside your vertical.
But in this case, I LOVE hot sauce, I'm gonna try it out!
Right now the benchmark is Cholula, it's everywhere, it's the standard at Two Elk in Vail, where I pour it all over my chili, like I said, I need to spice up EVERYTHING! And basic Cholula is good, and the brand extensions are fascinating, but they don't wear well, Tabasco does. You never burn out on Tabasco. You check into a hotel, they deliver those breakfast sausages with those tiny little Tabasco bottles, MMM! Although I will say opening those little bottles is damn near impossible. It's the seal. And once you do, you have to shake them violently to get any out. Which makes no sense, since you're gonna toss the bottle anyway, why not let it all come out, or hang out, like that great song by the Hombres...
So there are three models of Dexter's Gringo Bandito hot sauce.
There's the traditional red, which is satisfying, but I still prefer Tabasco.
And then there's the hot stuff, and once again, Tabasco is preferable.
But then there's the green stuff...
Now I'm looking for things I can eat so I can use it.
No, hot sauce does not go well with yogurt. But with tuna salad??
I was hungry last night, I was reading Jennifer Egan's "Manhattan Beach" and I realized I could not go to bed without a few bites of something. And my nutritionist says the Balance bars I devour are like candy bars, so I'm trying to cut down, but I'm not really interested in real food, but then I see some tuna fish in the fridge and a lightbulb goes off, I CAN EAT IT WITH DEXTER'S HOT SAUCE!
So I break out all three flavors. Testing them once again. But it's the green I cannot get enough of.
And I'm thinking of other greens. That one at Campos, it's pretty spectacular, but it's much more spicy, that zest is not for every day.
And they don't have a good green at Poquito Mas.
And I'm wondering where Dexter's green is on the spectrum...
But then I don't care. I'm convinced. This is great stuff!
So I go online and Google, and it turns out I'm not the only one. This stuff IS pretty fly for a white guy, someone not from south of the border.
And salsa has eclipsed ketchup. Our entire nation is one of gourmands. So I know many people don't care, then again many do.
And in Southern California, the shelves are littered with hot sauce brands.
And to tell you the truth, I have not tasted them all. But I have tasted a lot. But most are one and done, I don't need any more.
But I'm already worrying about Dexter's Gringo Bandito green running out. And there's nothing worse than having chicken or tuna salad without hot sauce. I've literally gotten up from the table and run out to buy some, because every meal must resonate.
And every life must have some spice.
TRY IT!

More Kid Rock
The one comment I will address head on is on Kirt Webster. Which the shocking accusations of sexual assault and mistreatment of others I take dead seriously. I never witnessed or heard about any of this outside that he was probably gay, which I could care less about. We (BMG) cancelled his and his companies services upon not only hearing about these, but other rumors that are starting to swirl. I hope to god this shit he is being accused of is not true as he has been nothing but a good friend to me. But if it comes to light that it is, I will be the first to cut the head off the snake.
Unfortunately, I believe sexual harassment is like cancer. We all know someone affected by it and it has to stop.

Probably why he's succeeded at doing it his way – too many talented people start to believe the BS people around them say and lose their way and their edge. Not Kid Rock. He's kept it real.

Bob,
It was great reading all those opinions about Kid Rock. Truth is he is "one of us" and works hard at what he does. It's all about the music for him for sure. AND ALSO the Working men & Women and the Ticket Buyers and His city of Detroit...and he gives of himself and gives to so many charities. He has lifted Detroit Up with all he gives and has given to that city. He is simply "The Man's, Man" (and you can insert woman here too, if you'd like.)
I'm from outside Detroit also and my dream is too meet him someday, However I do reside in Nashville now and I know he lives up the road from me! Someday!
Anyhoo, enjoyed it...I'm Happy You get Him...AND I loved Kid's Rock email there at the end! Great exclamation Mark!

The only thing I've never liked about Kid Rock is his use of the Confederate flag. That's only because he's a smart guy who came up in Detroit. He knows black folks and should know better about using that kind of symbolism - regardless of how *he* and other white folks view it (often as a symbol of the *nice* parts of the South, not the racist stuff), it's seen as a painful reminder of racism, hillbillies, etc for minorities. I know Kid Rock knows black folks. If he just asked them openly and honestly, "How do you and your family feel about this symbol?" he's have all the info he needed on that. I consider him an honest and genuine dude, so I just wish he'd do that and *listen.* And don't just ask one dude, ask a lot. Get some real life data points on the board.
Short of that Confederate Flag stuff, the dude is legit. He makes cool songs and kicks ass.
I'm 32 and I remember seeing his songs/videos on MTV and they were just cool as hell. You can't deny cool and you can't deny quality.
I also always had a lot of respect for how much Rock respects black music and black culture and his historical roots in Detroit's music scene.
He's always seemed like a super rad dude.

Does anyone every talk about all the young white poor kids that didn't join in on the white flight after the Watts riots? I remember being spit on called honkey every other day of my High School years. I had to take two buses in order to attend a High School out of my district in order not be beat up every day! I remember watching the fires from my Grandmothers house on 109th Place and after that my life changed! I never could stay after school because if I didn't catch that bus a 3:30pm than I walked through my crime ridden neighborhood. One of my brothers became a junkie and my oldest brother left four years before the riots. From the 6th to the 12th grade all I remember was having blonde hair and blue eyes I was the devil! Nobody ever talks about this period. It's truly a miracle I even graduated from High School! I have never heard this narrative! This is not PC so this won't be shared and I understand.

Just read the feedback to your Kid Rock post.
Kid Rock has a pretty extensive catalog of kick ass, fun music. And for some people, that's just not enough. When we were children, we didn't fall in love with music (whoever your band was that lit the flame) because of the message of the artist or their politics. We got hooked because the music was fun and the personalities and characters were appealing. Way back in 1984, Ratt was my first musical crush and their album Out Of The Cellar lit a fuse that has never burned out. I liked the way the music sounded. I liked Stephen Pearcy's voice (if you can imagine that) and the way his hair was forever covering half his face. I loved the guitar hooks and the superb production from Beau Hill. Most of all, I loved the way the music made me feel when I listened to it. And Kid Rock has done the same fucking thing for me for the last 20 years. Saw him live for the first time 2 years ago and the show was outstanding. He played multiple instruments and delivered non-stop energy throughout the entire show. And everyone in the sold out crowd was happy. But, shit, he visited the Trump White House. And for a lot of people that's simply unacceptable and therefore he's a hack. I can't think of a more ridiculous reason not to enjoy good music.

I'm going to write this, not to defend, but to show you that Kid Rock is all about the music:
A few of my musician friends (also all Detroit Tigers) fans went to Cheli's in Detroit a few years back to catch a Tigers playoff game in that awesome atmosphere. While at our table a busboy told one of my band mates that I reminded him of Kid Rock which was crazy to him because he's busing Kid Rock's table upstairs. So my boy, asks is there any chance I'd be able to meet him since i've been a fan of his hustle and straight up dedication from the very beginning. I actually molded our whole bands strategy around Kid Rock's 'never say die' motivated attitude. He wasn't able to pull any strings but when I caught wind that he was there I saw it as an opportunity to put us on his radar. (At that time we had been touring North America for about 6 years, had pushed well over 10,000 albums independently, had a single on a few Detroit and Flint stations, as well as a little steam on MTV2 and muchmusic in Canada). I went up to the bouncer at the stairs, asked him if I could go up, NO DICE. So i did the next best thing, found out where he parked and stationed myself at his truck until he ended his night and i'd hopefully get in a few words. My boys knew my dedication and didn't dispute or say a word. After a half hour or so one of them came out and told me that Kid Rock is downstairs at the bar, so I made my way in and sure enough there his is, Cigar in mouth, rocks glass of whatever liquor in hand, and hat on his head. I kind of eye'd up the situation for a moment, and then just said 'fuck it' and went for it. As he was about to make his way back upstairs I cut him off and put my arm around his neck like we were friends for years and said 'i'm a independent musician, and I will empty my pockets, and every dollar on my credit card for 5 minutes of your time'. No bullshit Mr.Lefsetz he looked at me, kind of grinned in a way that told me (Kid i remember when I was in your position) and then proceeded to saying 'come with me upstairs' so i followed and as I looked back at my group of friends they all had looks on their face that said 'Holy shit, whatever Mike just said, WORKED'. As we head upstairs we passed the bouncer, he shook his head with a smile and shook my hand, it was awesome. Once we got upstairs we were face to face in the hallway, I had his undivided attention (Chris Chelios came out at one point, as did KR'sgirllfriend and he introduced us to each other and let them know he'd be back in when we were done chatting). We discussed music, mutual friends and connections, even some of his projects he'd been working on, but most importantly he dialed in when I discussed our band. He said sing me something, so I sang our latest single which had been charting regionally, he said that's actually really good. Let me hear something else, you don't even have to sing it kid, you've proven you can sing (just so you know, hearing one of your biggest musical influences tell you you're good at what you've dedicated the majority of your life to is a feeling I can never fully describe). I worded the lyrics to our follow up single, yet to be released at the time, and he said 'I want to stay in touch, I don't know what i can do for you, if anything at all but take my email and keep me informed on what you guys are up to.' Everytime I emailed he responded btw. As the convo was ending I offered to buy him a drink which he said wasn't necessary, so I took it as our time is up and to head back down. I thanked him, and he said 'Hey kid, keep fighting the good fight' and also made sure I subscribed to YOUR newsletter which i've read ever since. On my way downstairs I passed that bouncer again and he said to me 'good for you' in a proud form of admiration. From there, I went outside and broke down and began crying as I was overcome with emotion. My best friend found me out there, saw me and began crying with me. He was the guy that introduced me to Kid Rock back in 1998 when Devil Without a Cause first came out, and we listened to that album non-stop, we were impressionable 17 year old kids and couldn't believe how over the top and badass this rock meets rap guy from Detroit was.
So whether people have good or bad to say about him, I always defend him, because opportunities don't come often in the music industry and he could've easily told me to 'Fuck off' when I approached him but he didn't. I truly believe he saw the hunger in my eyes, and that passion and fire that a young dedicated musician has. So here I am, once again with tears in my eyes telling you this story, still pushing along trying to make something of myself in this crazy business. Cheers to you Bob, and to you Kid Rock, your five minutes of time gave me a lifetime of drive!!!
