Re-Desperado

Loved this. I was blessed to do the second Eagles show in Nov of 1972 at my first club Tulagi in Boulder. They wanted a few out of the way places to test out the songs they were going to record for their first album. They played a week in Aspen then for me in Boulder. Glyn Johns flew in from London to take notes and go over the songs after the show when the audience left. I booked them because I loved the pedigree of the 4 members and thought without hearing them that they'd be amazing and had a shot to get big. It was right before finals at University of Colorado and I told Geffen Roberts management company that no one would come but they didn't care. Plus there was a major snow storm and my club was freezing which made the audience even smaller. I remember Bernie playing guitar and banjo with gloves. I did watch history being made for the 20 people coming each night. I always thought they were great but Don always tells me how mediocre they were. (Being his worst critic made him the great artist that he was.) Lucky to watch history being made. Still my favorite band and manager(Irving) of all time.

I got Desperado from MoFi that came out last year. The one-step vinyl, which was the purpose of the remastering you're listening to.

It has always been the only Eagles album I ever bought and loved. Which is why, when they opened with "Saturday Night" in 2014, I could have left the concert right after and been happy.

After all I'm no fan-boy; I saw them twice – once in 1975… well not really the Eagles but a Joe Walsh Kirschner In Concert taping at Santa Monica Civic in late 1975, when Frey, Henley, and Felder sat in for Turn to Stone, etc. They had to do a few takes of some of these. It was super interesting to watch, and it wasn't clear why these Eagles were there other than friendship – Walsh was not in the band then. But their harmonizing on Walsh tunes was a revelation, so it made sense when he joined.

He even opened with your theme song, which I loved.

But the MoFi One Step remastering of Desperado, which is where they got the new SACD remasters – from a digital feed that was tapped off the signal going to the lacquer – is shockingly great. After over 40 years of steady listening and relistening to this album, it actually sounded better. Suddenly it is a new thing.

Yes, I have a system that can highlight these improvements. If only for this record, I'm glad I built this setup. And Johns can say what he wants, but he brought the best out of the Eagles.

So, thanks for this morning surprise Your description exactly mirrors what affects me about this recording and why I love it. I don't care about the Eagles except for this album. If they did nothing else, they'd be great artists, for me.

Hello Bob,
Enjoy reading your posts, always.
Had to reply, as in my UBER on the way to LAX, my post-50-african-american driver was playing Desperado when I entered the car. Told her it was one of my favorites, and she smiled and said: If you don't like the Eagles, you don't have a soul. I got a little teary, but that's just me.

Be safe,

Thanks for writing about one of the classic albums of all time. A lot of the reason I am in the music publishing/song business is because of this album, the title song in particular. I was a teen when it was released, and didn't know much about song writing or songwriters, but I could tell on first listen that these guys had reached a new level for themselves, and maybe for the craft. I think it was a case of some pretty talented people getting together, inside and outside the band, and challenging themselves to be, (apologies to Steve Jobs) – "not good, not great, but insanely great".

This was the moment they broke through the insanely great barrier, and rest is history.

Best,

Michael McCarty

P.S. Desperado is my favorite song of all time. You could write a book about the genius craft/art behind it.

I've been building my personal sound system since college days. Seems every few years I upgrade to some new electronic devise to keep up with technology. My current system probably cost me as much as a years tuition for my daughters college education. Maybe not, but chasing the sound is an obsession that I enjoy. My speakers, ATC are north of $20k. WTF.

Most big rig owners will aways wonder…"It music sounds really good, but maybe it can sound better if I…". Bottom line is we are never satisfied and the chase will always continue. My girlfriend once asked me, "do you ever just sit down and really listen to the music without being critical?" I do, but with a critical ear that music lovers in my/our generation just can't suppress.

The latest Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced, from MoFi is as close to the master tapes as I'll ever get.

The journey continues.

Thanks for what you do.

Hey, Bob thanks for the piece on Desperado. It inspired me to take a 40
minute break from the insanity of the current world and take a deep inhale of Tequila Sunrise and the others...

I had a good laugh turning the album cover over and rediscovering the outrageous back cover photo—genius badass concept with the band hogtied, mangled and defeated at the feet of the vigilantes who look just like them: long haired, scruffy and who could just as easily have been on the wrong side of the rope. I wonder if any of your readers know the identities of the vigilantes? The one on the far right looks like J.D. Souther...
Anyhow, thanks for the album break, I (we) all need one...

Loved your take on Desperado. It's my favorite Eagles' album and Bitter Creek is my favorite track on that LP. However you failed to credit Bernie Leadon as both the writer and vocalist. In addition it's Leadon's great guitar outro that seals the deal on the song. I'm probably in the minority but I became less of a fan after Bernie left the band. He was the best musician in the original band. Go back and listen to Peaceful Easy Feeling. That's Bernie's guitar solo channeling Clarence White on the B-Bender. Obviously the Eagles went to whole nother level with Hotel California and Joe gave the band a more rocking sound but those first 4 albums represent my favorite period of the band.

Desperado is what I keep coming back to year after year when I listen to the Eagles. I am not tired of any of the songs. Loved hearing them do "Saturday Night" on the 2015 tour when Bernie was back in the fold. That and "Train Leaves Here This Morning" where the highlights of the show for me. Really wish they had put out a DVD of that tour as most of the other Dvd's just seem to be a rehash of what they have been doing the last 25 years.

One of my favourite albums of all time. The instrumental transition from Doolin Dalton reprise to Desperado Reprise at about 1.26 is perfection.
Interesting that the album cover features the 4 of them and with what happened later with Randy Meisner, the lyric "Four men ride out and only three ride back" seems prescient.
And Desperado I think is as perfect as a song can be. It's got sadness, but it also has hope, something that seems to be waning these days.
Henley surely must go down as one of the finest lyricists of all time.

I think my brother Bill bought Desperado, but I ended up knowing it...having it imprinted in my brain after listening to it many, many times. I always thought it was the pinnacle for the Eagles, everything after that was comercial pop, meh. All these years later, I haven't changed my mind. Doolin-Dalton,Tequila Sunrise, Bitter Creek, Desperado, it didn't get better from the Eagles (and I really like Lonesome Joe Walsh), Neil Young and Crazy Horse, well yeah, but the Eagles never again reached for that truth.

Thanks. I've been reading you for more years than I can count now, and I really enjoyed this.

"Desperado" was always one of my favorite albums, from the day it came out in my sophomore year of college. I agree with all your comments about specific songs, particularly "Certain Kind of Fool" and "Bitter Creek." I loved "Saturday Night," the lead-in song to "Bitter Creek", as well — the wistfulness matched my mood exactly that spring (I couldn't find a girl).

I don't have a MoFi system so I can't hear what you're talking about with the sound, but it doesn't matter. What I can hear sounds fantastic. The music carries the day, even without the high fidelity system.

Just as an addendum, I want to point out that Linda Ronstadt's version of "Desperado" was a major factor in helping to make the song one of the iconic works of its era. Both on her "Don't Cry Now" album and in subsequent concerts where she used it as her encore, Linda's version elevated the status of the song to a higher plane in the zeitgeist. Don Henley has acknowledged this in many interviews, and indeed, the song has been associated with her almost as much as with Eagles.

My wife and I bought $300 plus tickets to see the Eagles in Nashville last Thursday. We have seen them at least once per decade since our first show in 1979. The last couple of times I saw the band before last week, I was bored out of my mind. I had grown into a hater. And, I really did not like the audience. At one show about 15 years ago I blew up at the guys behind me cutting a real estate deal all the way through "Desperado". Once a yuppie......

So, I went into the show last week, where they play "Hotel California" start to finish then the hits, with low expectations. I was really interested in what Vince Gill brought to the table. That guy could be the mayor of Nashville anytime he wants. He is so beloved in this town.

Ok, count me blown away. It was a real band. No tricks. No programming that I could hear. They almost went into the ditch a few times and pulled it out with some glances, like a rock band should. Everyone was in top form, especially Joe Walsh. The guitar playing (yes, I still love solos) was a clinic. And Henley's voice was strong and forcefully delivered. Just under three hours of hits on top of more hits. The audience was all gray, but they were raging. And yes, Vince was incredibly special on the Frey songs. They had a full orchestra magically appear behind the band on those songs that had strings. They had the Fisk Jubilee Singers doing BGV's on some songs.

Older acts are always a gamble and usually can't hold a candle to their past. As a guy who sees multiple shows any given week let me advise that If you can afford it, this band is in top form and it made me happy.

Best,

Don VanCleave

Re-Abortion

You're so right. We don't need more than marches in blue states and blue cities if we want to protect a women's right to body autonomy. This reminds me of all of the Women's marches after Trump was elected. Great camaraderie but the marches didn't prevent Trump from appointing three unqualified right wing justices to the Supreme Court, and that's why we're here now. Alito actually quoted a 17th century witch burning jurist in his horribly misguided leaked decision! If there ever was any doubt about the right wing's intention to set the clock back on women's rights and human rights at least 100 years there you have it. Normal judges with brains and a heart tend not to quote 17th century witch burners as valid legal precedent.

I wish we were hearing more from leaders in the entertainment and media industries. That they will pull their offices and events from states like Tennessee and Texas (MusicBiz and SXSW I'm looking at you). These entities have more than enough money to take a stand with their enormous revenues these past many years. These same entities (record labels, publishers, media outlets) depend on persons who can get pregnant and persons who could die from pregnancy. You can't have a flourishing creative scene in an oppressive draconian state or country and thus it would actually be good for business, good for the entertainment industry to take a stand.

And what can the people do? The people, the enlightened people of this country, or just those who don't want themselves or a loved one to go to jail for taking the abortion pill, or go to jail for murder in Louisiana for having an abortion, or know a doctor who could go to jail for providing an abortion to a women suffering an ectopic pregnancy (for those who don't know, and apparently this is a great many of our ignorant elected officials, an ectopic pregnancy occurs in the fallopian tubes and can NEVER lead to a viable pregnancy but can without medical intervention almost always lead to the death of the person carrying the ectopic pregnancy), or for helping an eleven year old who was raped ((ust a reminder to your right wing readers, when it's an eleven year old it's always rape) or any doctor who ends a pregnancy for any number of various reasons, what can we do? We can go on strike, and I mean stop working, stop spending, for as long as it takes to force the Senate and the House to enact legislation making abortion on demand the law of the land, that it be treated as a medical decision between a pregnant person and their doctor. Period. Even a week long work and spend strike could bring the country to its knees and scare any state senators and representatives who may be on the fence on this issue. Let's use the power of the mighty dollar for good. This is what it's going to take to prevent this whole nation from slipping into some dystopian nightmare where the ignorant and the cruel are running the show.

I was an editor on a documentary about the Women's movement in 2013. One of the interviewees was a woman who started and ran an abortion clinic in Fargo, ND for 20 years, 1981-2001.

She said that every single week, someone who had been outside the clinic protesting was inside getting an abortion, or the daughter of someone who had been outside the clinic protesting was inside getting an abortion, or the wife of a legislator who was trying to shut them down was inside getting an abortion.

She also said that, without fail, each one said "it was different for them".

You would think that if a women found herself in a position where she had to overcome her "deeply held religious beliefs" in order to obtain an abortion would understand that other women might be in that position, too, and that maybe it was necessary to have (and they would be grateful for having) a clean, legal, affordable place to do it.

To this day, you can go online and read about "anti-abortion" women rampaging through clinics demanding to be first in line for their abortion because theirs is "justified", and everyone else in there is a slut using abortion as a form of birth control.

The selfishness and hypocrisy know no bounds.

I know a lot can't because they are on the line, but many can. All people who care about each other, because those old white men are desperately clinging on, and they see their own mortality in our myriad faces. Dance, refuse to serve them, clean their houses, drive them by bus or car, cook for them. Oh and how about no sex? Save our girls and our boys from their misogyny and homophobia. Great piece mr Lefsetz. Here in The Netherlands the suitcase handlers on Schiphol (one of Europe's largest airports) decided to go on a spontaneous strike a week ago, on one of the busiest days of the year. To protest bad salaries and working conditions, ensuing a lot of chaos and huge criticism on Schiphols leadership. And guess what: unions are now talking with management about their complaints. No hard results yet, but seeing the amount of pressure from both society and politics, management will undoubtedly budge. Already new strikes have been announced for this summer, so pretty sure this will keep up the pressure to see real change.

You nailed it. I've been saying it to my wife since Ferguson, then Trump, etc. etc. Until the majority of Americans are willing to risk their jobs nothing will change. That's how we got here. Everyone that thinks putting a black square on instagram for 24 hours is "doing something" to "fight back." The average American isn't willing to sacrifice their own livelihoods.

And I get it, believe me. Most of us get our health care through our jobs. There's risk not just to your pocketbook but to your actual life.

I left music and became a coach and teacher. If any group is about to realize its power, it is teachers. They're coming after us from every direction. I work in a private school so its a little different, but every public school teacher in america going on strike at the same time? Country will grind to a halt.

But you know what's sad? Tucker Carlson's lead every night will be about how the country's suffering is these greedy, selfish, entitled teacher's faults. ESPECIALLY the black and brown ones, who are just lucky to have a job.

And enough people will believe him.

As soon as you use the phrase 'anti intellectualism' you're already in the realm of the elite effete and in a corner but every damn dumb thing, creeping authoritarianism, consumer inequality, crap medical availability, all of it stems from deprioritizing education.
American education should be up there with the military in importance. (You'd think that the powers that be would realize that if the masses were better educated new and better ways to blow shit up would abound but perhaps the emphasis is on maintaining stupid)
Presumably if the masses were better educated Roe vs Wade might be seen as a benefit. Maybe nobody would think that JFK Jr will become vice president too but maybe that's too much to ask.
All education should be free and subsidized.

I don't think the Left is home alone and scared - their problem is appreciation of complexity. The right has all the sound bite answers nailed down airtight. The Left really has no answers because... well? Who does? We're looking at extinction. We're trying to solve very difficult and expensive problems. Plus, we're looking at the fact that one half of America wants to return to The Dark Ages.
Truth is, you can't win an argument with a fool because they can manufacture 'facts' as needed.
The dem's and Left can't compete with the Right just as, for many, Hamlet can't compete with Rambo.
The left has some serious messaging, framing, and communication problems - but I'm not sure they'll ever be able to compete with the Road Runner. And that's pretty confusing.

I think they're waiting for the Road Runner to run off the cliff.

Their opinion is purely based on a man-made idealism (usually religion) instead of actual real-world impacts that result from being forced (FORCED) to have a kid you didn't plan for. I think everyone really needs to think about that. that is not democracy. People creating and forcing legislation that doesn't impact them is not what democracy is about. Unfortunately, that's more and more the american way. Freedom my ass. It's all a farce.

Spot on, as usual.

This is bigger than abortion or Trump or whoever else is making noise. We are at a crossroads. One is either for Democracy or one is for Autocracy. And sadly, a solid 1/3 of the country, or more, is for Autocracy including some very influential big players. What they seem to fail to accept is that Autocracy always ends in a 'cult of personality' government and eventually the ends do not justify the means. I could go on and get into the weeds but either one accepts these historical lessons and accepts this is our current situation or one does not. And I'm at a loss on how to convince anyone on the Autocracy side to change.

Here's where music can make a statement...
All artists and touring musicians should pull out of any tour dates that are scheduled to happen in the 26 states that have these abortion laws lined up. I don't know why they didn't do it with Texas in the first place but now, those artists should pull the plug on bringing any business to those states. Sure, the fans will be upset but they can travel across state lines just like those in need of abortion will have to.

As you said, we should be cutting these states off in an economic way. The democratic states already prop them up but that's a political nightmare to unwind. The artists should take a stand - pull off those tour dates and put these red states in an economic chokehold in the best way they can.

If artists take a stand like that, others will follow. The first are the true rockstars who put art and morality ahead of money.

It is not surprising as to how the right feels about abortion, until 1 of their offspring suffers an horrendous rape and pregnancy as a result. Women of means will continue to obtain abortions wherever the law will allow, whichever state will perform. Is banning RU486 - the abortion pill-next? It's disappointing to watch our country going backwards as to a woman's right to choose an outcome from an unwanted pregnancy. And how strange that Gorsuch and Kavanaugh both told female senators what they wanted to hear? Keep going Bob.

What's happening in the States right now with the GOP is terrifying.
It's very, very strategic and targeted.
Its aim is to take down democracy, to take down the U.S.

You are 1000 per cent right to talk about Putin's strategy in this regard.
This has been going on for a long time..
But what's shocking is how a country so involved with people talking about patriotism,
and the party of Lincoln, is leading the country in this direction.
It's also shocking how many American voters have come up with this odd mantra, that if they've always voted for a specific party,
that's how they'll vote no matter what the current state of the party is.

And the level of people getting into politics to take advantage of this?
People who, as recently as 10 years ago would never have gotten this far,

We're living in dangerous times.
You've nailed it.
The centre and the left and people who really grasp what's going on, need to step up, speak out
and take this head on.

To me, it can be simplified:

FOX News begat Trump, assisted by Russian social media bots
Trump begat 3 anti-abortion supreme court justices, assisted by McConnell who invalidated Garland and expedited Coney-Barrett
Radicalized Supreme Court begat the end of Roe vs. Wade

None of this would have happened if the national consciousness had not been polluted by FOX. They are the source of this.

I love your emails Bob. You are a truly a bright and shining light. Thank you for your work. The abortion news has made me very frustrated. I have a wife and two daughters and it's embarrassing I will grow up in a world with more rights than they will have. I donated to Planned Parenthood but don't know what else to do.

Thank you for reminding me I'm not alone!

If democracy dies, its blood will be on the hands of those of us who refused to join the battle.

Watching the Democrats talk to the press is like watching a guy in a movie who won't pick up the gun that's a foot away as the murderous villain is approaching. Inside you're screaming "Grab the gun!"

The truth is sitting right there waiting to be used. Imagine what would happen if we were screaming the truth every day!

The left prefers nuance to binary simplicity. Shades of color to black and white. Consideration to certainty. But it ain't working. It's never gonna work. The people have had it with thinking. It's time to ACT UP!

Biden has to rest up and go out to the microphones and blast away. Every day. The Democrats must raise their voices in outrage and condemnation, relentlessly, every day. The Republicans even served up abortion on a silver platter for us, and we're letting them get away with that.

For God's sake, the former President is a proven fraudster who lies with glee about something as gravely important as a presidential election, and Biden never takes him on.

C'mon man.

From your abortion letter today below. Do you remember when Life Magazines entire issue was photos of the 500 American soldiers (KIDS, mostly) who were killed in Vietnam the previous week. That helped turn people against the war. Still shocking to see those photos.

The "New York Times" printed victims of 9/11 in their pages, how about victims of abortion, day after day after day. The deaths of yore, never mind the more recent terminations.

It's the eternal problem, the left is always nuanced, the right is simple. They don't wanna talk about the 110 thousand atopic pregnancies that could result in death from this. They don't want to talk about rape, incest etc. they don't wanna deal with the child after it's born. We are in trouble. I hope we can fight back somehow. I believe Putin jumped into this years ago with the right wing. In England and France hungry Poland. Used simple Nazi Tactics to separate the countries. Trump was the Trump card, and here we go. They'll work hard to keep us barefoot and pregnant Won't they?
My question is, If it takes two to tango, and the result is a woman's pregnancy. Why is there no responsibility for the men involved in creating that life that needs to be so protected by these right to lifers, etc.?
And while we're talking about lives, what about the mothers life?
Would you like to look at the child that you knew was a product of rape or incest, both of which are illegal separately from resulting in an abortion, right?
I hope some of my sarcasm/irony/hypocrisy is dripping through here.
And what about the men who pay for their women to have an abortion, where does this leave them?
The people in charge of crafting these laws to rule our lives are ignorant and have no clue. Or any experience in the matter. . Yes Supreme Court this means you.
No woman wakes up thinking "oh let me have an abortion today".
What if they passed a law saying that the man who caused the abortion should be castrated. Sorry guys - did all your arm hair and maybe your pubic hair just stand up on end when I said that? Uh -huh. Thought so.
But the worst part of all these new abortion ban bills is the fact that the government will pay you to spy on your neighbor & report if somebody has an abortion. Interesting how they have this extra money to pay these people but don't have the money to really govern their state properly. Sorry but that's despicable.
Jc - from the heart & better experience with these things

You said it all well. Fact: In states and countries that either outlaw or allow abortion, there is an inverse correlation with crime 18+/- years later. No abortion, crime up. Abortion, crime down. Unwanted children suffer as does society. Lose-lose game.

You are ABSOLUTELY right. A national strike (which may unfortunately effect the economies of pro abortion states more than right wing states) and it's time to start playing hardball, use technology against those who want to own women. Have women truckers come in and block roads that lead to state legislatures or homes of disingenuous journalists or networks who know they are lying but love their paycheck and face or voice spread around the nation.

How bout demanding the corporations we work for pay while we strike? Support their employees fighting for basic rights. Why do we buy a damn thing from a corporation that is tucked away in a tax free red state and doesn't say to a governor "we'll move to your state but not if you don't demand that you are a state that passes the ERA?"

Do people get that women are not considered equal under the constitution.
Not all, ofcourse, but many white men who seem to fear they are losing everything are gonna make sure they own our bodies and make sure we are not legally equal everywhere in America.

I used to diminish how much women were discriminated against. It's because I thought I could do anything I put my mind to and to acknowledge such discrimination existed would make that journey emotionally harder.

History has taught us one part of the genius of creating a middle class economic tier is that people don't like to give things up that provide comfort.

That along with assassinating progressive leadership stopped us from achieving our goals in the 60's and 70's. Sure we got outta Vietnam but accepted Ronald Reagan and his trickle down fantasy land. We gonna have to be willing to give up some creature comforts for the greater good. Do we still claim to be willing to do so?

Insane in the membrane.
Can I and can we stop pretending things are a way they are not?

What do you suggest the left do? Block the entrances to every evangelical church in America? Prevent people from entering Chick-fil-A, Hobby Lobby and other companies known to give money to anti-choice efforts? What *can* we do at this point since we don't have the majority in the Senate to eliminate the filibuster and may very well lose the House in a few months?

I will be out marching, but I know it does little to nothing at this point. We needed this outrage when Obama's SCOTUS pick was denied, when the press was vilifying Hillary and people were eating it up (btw she was right about EVERY SINGLE THING), when the right was packing the courts for years and years and years, like the left should have been doing. As a woman, I am so angry that my right to my own body is controlled by 9 people on a court. How sad it is that women born today have fewer rights than women born 50 years ago.

And I am so furious that the *women* I know who are anti-choice and vocal about it (it's obscene to me that there are any women at all on this side of the argument) are the very same women I know who have taken advantage of the privileges we had protected under Roe v Wade. These same women who had miscarriages (and subsequent D&C procedures) and went thru in vitro (tell me again how many embryos are destroyed during IVF?) - but now that *they* have their little families, they are fine taking away those protections for the next generation. SMDH.

We all know who this is going to affect the most. This isn't about saving lives. This is about protecting the upper class and controlling poor women and making sure they stay poor. And they have the nerve to say it's in the name of God and Jesus.

If we aren't going to separate church and state, isn't it high time then that we tax the mother-living-shit out of these religious institutions and put that money towards caring for the living human beings in this country who need our help the most?

We can never compete with the right wing outrage machine. But we must organize and stand up for the majority of Americans who see this potential Supreme Court decision as the biggest disruption to everyday life, as we've known it, in our lifetimes. I can't even imagine an effective general strike at this point. Who will be the leaders that emerge from this moment? Will there be any? Is it possible to organize the liberal coalition? Turnout in our local Nashville elections this week was beyond dismal. I struggle to find hope in this moment.

As I love my Arizona and am happy that it turned blue and will continue so, I'm from Germany and try to accept any other countries elections and choices as long as it is known as a free election. I (as almost all Europeans) hated and hate Trump. He's devil's son. My late Grandma from Italy always crossed herself when he was on TV and that was BEFORE he played a politician. That says a lot. I was laughing at her that time..

As someone who lives the major part of the year in Europe I can tell you that it all starts with your TV. "Reality" shows are not showing reality in the US. They are scripted. You guys yourself feed each other with fake reality. Your heroes are not people with high moral standards or living for and helping to turn the world into a better place. Those are crazies like Musk, Trump or the Kardashians. I mean hello???

Contrary, people who try to do what might help the majority of the country have to live in fear. I don't say that Sanders or AOC are always correct, but they fight for stuff people in most parts of Europe have as a standard of living for 50+ years. And we are free, you can say shit on tv if you think it's shit. And fuck, when you want to use a swear word, nobody cares.. there is no ef's... say exactly what and how it is. That is living the truth!

I have many friends in the US for decades now whom I love dearly. I'm lucky as none of them is a Republican. Funny side story is that I was a huge John McCain fan. But the Republican party has nothing in common with John McCain, he would be a Blue by nowadays standards.

However, the German law concerning abortion is very strict too. We have 12 weeks into pregnancy. Afterwards its only allowed if the mother's life is in danger. Mother is always more important than a non-born. That is probably the difference. We consider life that is already living on earth a higher worth than a "might get born in a couple of month" and "might be alive"...

I think the whole discussion that it is only about a female's body is wrong. It is part of it and of course I want to eat if I want, drink if I want, exercise if I want to and be pregnat if I want to. Nobody else should have the right to tell me what I HAVE to do. Suggesting yes. We have to go to a clinic before too and hear alternatives like giving birth and having the baby adopted, as there are long lists of couples waiting for a baby. But decision is only what the pregnant woman want.

But beside the female's body, everyone fighting for "LIFE" needs to acknowledge that an already living life is higher than a not born. Simply you can not put the basic rights of a living person below the rights of "someone/something" (whatever you call it) that is NOT living on earth.

To come to an end. Get your people educated. Teach them about consequences. About standards of living on other parts of the world. About rights and laws in other countries.

We are ONE earth. The problems you guys produce will become others. Like crazy Putin now. Suddenly he's not someone we hope to change in then long run, he became bitter enemy of the Western world. Shit does not know borders.

Guys help your wifes/gf's fight for their right to live the way the choose. They choose you, they know how to decide right, right ?

"Where is the left wing?
HOME ALONE AND SCARED!"
-- Bob

Bob,
The above is not how I feel -- I'm sometimes scared but it's not freezing me up. I'm knocking on doors* of Republicans (and former friends) one of whom tells me, "Don't go to my neighbors house; he'll shoot you if he finds out you're a Dem." And he's serious.

I'm trying! I'm still up for the public argument. I'm writing Lil' Susie Collins and Manchin and Lisa. I'm buying ammo ...

1. ... out of desperation for doing SOMETHING, I've even *decided to run for the Maine State House of Representatives for Christ's sake! Seriously. Qualified for our clean elections funding and everything, thinking "I might be able to help, somehow" ... and that's all I can think of to do!

2. I had my 5-years of rants on fecesbook, getting threats from several different people, pissing off former friends, family (yes, two of my brothers), and former students. And attempting to argue using reason, ad fontes, Snopes, lists of journalistic standards, blah, blah, blah, before I realized that NO ONE GIVES A SHIT about facts and truth; THEY are in control. Power is there's and there's exclusively; just like Putin, the threat of greater violence is there, the silo is completely encircled by the invisible fence outside and no rational person knows what to do -- many of us would "do it", but we can't figure out the "it" and the train's already off the rails.

3. I have several guns (the norm, here in rural Maine) even though I rarely hunt anymore, BUT I just recently bought another -- a small Glock for concealed carry.

What do "we" -- I'm a centrist-leaning-left guy; you know the kind, one who used to discuss and debate ISSUES -- what do we DO to take action? (I like your idea about protesting Fucker Carlson's place in western Maine, but what's that accomplish?) ...

... the far right is a juggernaut of bullshit and lies and they know they control the levers of power -- SCOTUS, lil' Mitchie, the State Houses, some (how many??) law enforcement folks. How to fight that?

It's a fucking CULT, pure and simple. Ever try to get someone out of a cult, until they're ready? It's a seamless world of -- how many? -- 35 million? 45 million people? TrumpianCultists. And there's no talking with them. Here in our region, they're now on our tiny little school board, the fundy churches are weaponized around this bullshit -- and the actual weapons are oiled and ready.

Trump whistles, the dogs will come. Again, but more of them, more confidently.

DOJ and Merrick and the holy Senate (remember when that was a place of honor?) appear to be gutless shills, themselves. The ONLY thing that I can see that might work, won't be done. WON'T BE DONE. Prosecute Trump and all of them, balls to the wall, and quickly. Take the chance that when the violence erupts, law enforcement and the military will hold. If they do and those people go to jail, then right wing momentum WILL stall. If they don't hold, oh well; the military would've been coming for us eventually anyway.

Tell me -- how do sane people ever come together over this? What do we DO besides hand-wringing, arming ourselves, me running for the state House, you doing whatever individual thing you do, young people holding signs and doing it the way we did in the 60s -- there is no simple, galvanizing "thing" that draws people on the center and left together, the way psycho-rage conspiracy draws the right together. And, we don't have 50 years of planning all this, experimenting to see what works, re-reading the dictatorial playbooks of antiquity.

What.
Do.
We.
Do?

Looks like we fucked, Bob. Please, PLEASE, show me how I'm wrong.

What we are seeing now is what happens when the next generation gets complacent and entitled. The rights that our foremothers and forefathers fought so hard to protect have been taken for granted. I attended all those meetings with my mother, I made phone calls, I helped her sponsor events to secure the rights of women and provide education about what options were out there for women. I had the honor of meeting all these amazing women who fought for women's rights. But, all I currently see is the hard work that my mother, and those before her, worked so hard to protect only to have completely been undone. Why? COMPLACENCY AND ENTITLEMENT. I am a Generation Xer and my mother fought HARD to protect women's rights and the rights of women to control their health, their bodies. I did not take that for granted and supported her causes to protect those freedoms, those rights. Unfortunately, the generation after Generation X never saw any of that, none of it. They only got to reap the benefits of the work that the previous generations had done, but never saw the sausage being made. They also didn't suffer any real tragedies in their early years of growing up, no wars, no guns in school, no confusing messages being delivered to them 24/7 through their cell phones. Their challenges were different, but they basically had it easy. Easy leads to complacency, complacency leads to entitlement. Here we are.

But, what happens in the real world as a result of these legal decisions? They don't affect people with money. The folks with money will figure out a way around this nonsense. The problem lies with those who do not have the means in which to solve these problems. The problem of a 16 y.o. who gets pregnant and has religious parents that force her to go through with a pregnancy to term. The problem of a 25 y.o. woman who has no financial support that gets raped by a boyfriend. The problem of a 30 y.o. man who has accidentally knocked up his girlfriend and doesn't have the means in which to care for himself, let alone a child and mother. These are real situations that exist now and will only grow in numbers if we continue on this path. Taking away these rights from people (not just women) will bring back what my mother and those before her worked so hard to protect. The back alley abortions, women harming themselves in order to "rid themselves" of unwanted pregnancies….it will all come back.

I'm not BLAMING any single person, any entire group or even specific generation for any of this, but I'm gonna say something that might piss people off. I just returned from a 3 day music festival in Atlanta and what I noticed was the fact that people had a lot of tattoos, beautiful artwork, intricate pieces…things you knew took a lot of time, and money, to create. I actually felt a little FOMO, as I didn't have any myself. Of course, it's everyone's right to mark their bodies up the way they wish (see what I did there?). But, if people spent as much time, effort and energy on protecting women's rights as they did on which tattoo to get next, I'm thinking we might be in a better situation than we are now.

Finally, I don't have the answers, I don't know what path is the right one…society has become so damn divided and angry at each other, it's seems impossible to even sit down and have a real conversation about the problem, let alone, how to solve it.

I was thinking about my babysitter, who went to New York City. SO EXCITING to a little girl! I wanted to go on big girl trips, too.
But when I asked her what she did, did she have fun? She cried... Life before Roe v. Wade when so much was unspoken. I thought I'd done something wrong. Her mother told me, "no, everything's okay" and took me in the kitchen and gave me a small glass of Coke, asked me about school.
Years later, I asked the Mom what made my rock star/glorious blond haired/cheerleader babysitter cry, she told me the whole story.
This was the same mother who got me a charter subscription to MS magazine when it started publishing...

Rhetoric is easy. Adoption. Abortion. Just words.
The impact of both... on many... That's what no one considers.
Everything you say about young unwed mothers is spot on. SPOT ON. Plus the stigma for the child, the one on Aid to Dependent Children, who can't do the school trips or whatever, as well as the wear and tear on a mother who now has to pay for childcare if she's to work at a job that pays minimum wage or not much better. Words don't have dimension, real life implications or the exhaustion/rejection factored in.
Easy to sling words, hard to understand their reality or impact.

John Prine and the great Bobby Braddock (the Country Music Hall of Famer who wrote "He Stopped Loving Her Today") got it right when they wrote "Unwed Fathers."
"From an teenage lover, to an unwed mother
Kept undercover, like some bad dream
While unwed fathers, they can't be bothered
They run like water, through a mountain stream..."
He sang this in Dublin Ireland in 1988... a country where abortion was morally so wrong, and yet, the people felt every word because they understood the impact.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVXCVKqpw1s

And for all the well-off LGBTQ+ people who voted for Trump et al because of the tax incentives (and I know some), they're coming for you next. This is how it begins...
Women have no value to these people. Sexism isn't removed by virtue signal promotions of women into jobs, because often they can embody the same toxic masculinity cloaked by pro-femme rhetoric.
So it continues. Amazing how quickly progress is washed away if you're not diligent, because to quote your friend Larry McMurtry, "It Can't Happen Here."
Somewhere in heaven, my father weeps for us all...

Bob, I have never replied to any of your emails before, but what you said was spot on. In the post truth world manufactured by the right where ignorance is weaponised, lies lionised, and the deliberate distortion of reality is gleefully and shamelessly blasted from the faux news sound system by the smirking point men and women of the trumplican cause, it seems that truth is "quaint", a poor second cousin of their false glamors and hyberbole. And now that the king of modern fake libertarianism, Elon Musk, owns Twitter, it's going to get worse. I too get demoralized and wonder how we ever going to get out of this mess and address any of the crises we face. All I know is that the only way they will absolutely win is of we don't push back. I can only imagine the kind of nasty emails you're gonna get for this. And again, it'll mostly come down to party lines. Without offering my own opinion, I'll just say this. I had dinner with a woman who worked at a Planned Parenthood. I was always sort of on the fence about abortion. She told me stories of battered and broken women coming in having them because they'd been physically, emotionally and mentally abused by their partners into having a baby. I feel like many Pro Life folks think abortions are limited to irresponsible sluts who got drunk and didn't use protection on either end. That's patently untrue. It can happen to anyone.

Even the so-called Libertarians on Reddit can't decide if they should be pro-life or pro-choice, despite being the political group most associated with personal freedoms.

Congratulations, America, you now have a truly activist Supreme Court completely willing to ignore prior legal precedent, Stare decisis, in order to enact their warped political agenda.

The rest of the democratic world weeps at what is to come of your election process and personal rights hard worn through years of suffering and discrimination.

The next on the activist court's chopping block is the same birth control methods you, and most of us, have relied on to keep most pregnancies voluntary.

Yet another reminder that elections have dangerous and damaging consequences. Oh, but her emails! A reminder too, that the tired old "both sides are the same" is complete bullshit.

One of the fundamental tenets of the GOP is being manifested daily, via state legislatures, Congress, and the courts, especially SCOTUS: that, no, all men are not created equal and certain people - depending on your race, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, and financial status - should NOT or NEVER be regarded as equal. And they're working relentlessly to make that the law of the land.

For those in the "both sides are the same" crowd, when choosing between the lesser of two evils you should always choose less evil. From democracy to privacy, that choice has never been more clear.

I've spent the last two days on Twitter, in a mile-long Twitter thread, trying to get one of my Libertarian friends to read that NY Times article about Tucker. This guy is a data junkie. He won't read it, despite all the data in the article. He claims that calling Tucker racist destroys all cred for the article. He'd rather bury his head in the sand and focus on that single issue than read that article and have his beliefs challenged. This is what Tribalism has wrought, an unwillingness to entertain ideas and discussion from the other side, two separate realities. How are we ever supposed to fix problems in this country if we can't communicate with each other?

One of the most interesting panels I saw this year at SxSW was an augmented reality panel. Glasses/contacts that cut out of your field of vision extraneous data that has no meaning to you. Now imagine applying that tech to people. Think it can't happen?

You do a huge service by speaking up. Most progressives have weaned out or lost touch or cut ties with right wingers during Trumps presidency. You, and maybe Howard are the only ones I can think of who have conservative people who read or listen to you. So it's imperative that you voice your views Bob, also because many progressive men get pretty quiet when it comes to abortion. Hell even a lot of left leaning women do as well. They don't want the vitriol. It's not a pretty sounding word. There are so many unarguable facts when it comes to women and their bodies but if someone is just going to yell "baby killer" over and over, they will never hear the rational reasons as to why abortion must remain an option and choice for women—and men. I bet there are thousands of men reading your letters who are grateful af they could help their girlfriend, sister, fling, wife, affair obtain a legal and safe abortion. They need to speak up too. As a woman and mother who has had 2 abortions at age 12 and 23, I am so grateful that you have the courage and intellect to articulate the issue.

Today's TV Recommendation

"Feel Good": https://bit.ly/3kNVOTO

My friend John started testifying about "Slow Horses." He was a fan of Mick Herron's books. He testified about the Mick Jagger theme song. But I had no frame of reference, knew nothing of what he was talking about.

But John kept mentioning it. And scrolling through Apple TV+ I saw it. And decided to watch it.

This is the Gary Oldman show. Cops in England. Well, actually MI5. It's a high class production, visually rich, acting impeccable, but Felice fell asleep in the first episode. But we watched another. I was impressed that Apple commissions such highbrow product. But there was absolutely no buzz on it. Maybe because Apple rolled out episodes week by week. Sure, if something is an instant hit this can build buzz. But if something is left field, without HBO exposure on cable TV, one of just a very few projects, it is lost in the shuffle. But maybe it's just not worth the buzz.

And then we switched to "Feel Good."

It was on my list, I could not remember what it was about, but I rechecked with "RottenTomatoes," and its ratings were 100% critics, and 90% audience. Really doesn't get any better than that.

So we dug in.

I guess we're inured to mediocrity. The songs in the top ten. The genre movies. It's a smorgasbord of professionalism. But creativity? Envelope-pushing? Jaw-dropping? That's almost nowhere to be found.

Why?

Because both creators and purveyors are worried about getting ahead of the audience, being uncommercial, sent to purgatory. So we get endless safe, like "Slow Horses." But "Feel Good"...

Now it's not much of a commitment. Two seasons. Twelve episodes. All under half an hour.

But there's a segment of the public which won't bother to tune in. They can't handle it when two women have sex, even though Mae considers herself non-binary, not sure whether she's a boy or a girl. But Mae is not only magnetic, she's real. That's right, "Feel Good" is a thinly fictionalized version of comic Mae Martin's life. And to tell you the details... Would undercut the viewing experience, so I don't want to.

Are there some clichés in "Feel Good"? Yes, the character Phil, like out of a TV sitcom, well-played as the third wheel, but he doesn't ring true in any way, he sticks out.

But Mae. And her life and quandaries. And the relationship issues. BINGO!

Doesn't matter whether it's heterosexual or homosexual or any kind of human relationship, they're all the same...insecurities, issues of mutuality.

Our viewpoints are skewed by most music and TV. Where there is a male, but sometimes a femme fatale, who dictates, who rules a world they believe they dominate. No one dominates the world, and everybody has insecurities.

Come on, is the other person into you? Are you behaving correctly? Are you moving too fast? Or too slow?

And every person is different. You can say the same thing to two different people and get vastly different reactions. One can reject you, feeling offended, the other can reject you because you're moving too slow.

Mae is screwed up. But in truth, we're all screwed up.

Mae wants to feel connected. Is she just needy? Does who she's involved with matter?

I've never heard of Mae Martin. But in "Feel Good" she emerges fully-formed. I cannot fathom how she created her own show and got it so right. The dialogue, the feelings. Being true to her vision. She hasn't had the rough edges sanded off. She's genuine, and you can feel it, it shows on screen.

This is not "Friends." Not that it's heavy, in most instances it's light. But "Feel Good" is not superficial. To have a sustained relationship is nearly impossible. If you're together with someone for years you've weathered so many crises to get there, or one person is just internalizing their feelings and staying silent. There are the misunderstandings. Miscommunications.

I don't want to say any more, but Mae Martin and "Feel Good" are what the internet and streaming explosion promised but didn't deliver.

Yes, now everybody can make and distribute music. Has this generated any left field superstars, taking us to unknown places that wow us? No.

But Netflix...

Come on, Netflix was HBO on steroids. At HBO creators heard no, at Netflix they heard yes. And only by saying yes, trusting in creators, can you end up with something like "Feel Good."

Now I was reading in the paper about Netflix's new game show with Howie Mandel... This is where Netflix is losing the plot, literally, trying to be all things to all people. Its original programming started out highbrow, the outlet doesn't need the lowbrow, it may think it does but it doesn't. HBO stands for something, Netflix used to, but now it's muddying the water.

Netflix doesn't need the detritus. People will watch smart shows. You just have to lead them to them.

The problem with Netflix is not the lack of new, great product, but the fact that the average customer is unaware of most of it. Like "Feel Good," which premiered in 2020 and concluded in 2021. I'd never heard of it, or maybe I read about it and forgot about it. No one ever told me about it. But it's there, just waiting for you to partake.

It's the new and different, the outside that resonates. And this is true over and over and over again. "Squid Game." "The Tiger King." The phenomena can't be categorized, they are truly must watch TV.

Stop lauding HBO and Disney with their anemic new streaming offerings. Sure, catalog goes a long way, but it creates no buzz, builds no shows, especially if you've got so new few shows available. Today people devour product. They eat it up nearly instantly. And then they want more. They want to jump from show to show, the flat screen is not the idiot box, far from it, TV is the most dynamic creative medium extant today.

As for allowing a free, ad-laden tier... That's hogwash. There aren't that many people who want to endure the commercials. Look at the Spotify numbers re listening. It's the paying customers who spend all the time on the service. And Charlie Ergen just said the ad-supported TV model was broken, with fifteen minutes of spots an hour.

As for Netflix's subscriber loss...

Now all the numbers are in. Seemingly every technology company took a hit, even Amazon. What happened? The world opened up. Covid restrictions evaporated. Everybody isn't sitting at home, in front of the TV.

But Wall Street only sees numbers. And Hollywood thinks it is in control of the audience when in truth it is vice-versa.

Watch "Feel Good." Maybe only in little chunks, it might overwhelm you. But when it's over you won't forget it, and you'll tell everybody you know about it.

Like me.

A Little More Abortion

My inbox is blowing up with missives from the right wing. They're not cautious and they're not pretty. They're agitated and explosive. Which means what I said resonated with them. Their goal is to shut me up. Their goal is to shut everyone up who doesn't agree with them. They want you to believe you're whacked, don't understand, should stick to what you know and better be ready for consequences.

This is not what happens when I write something that pisses off the left. Takes a long time for the lefties to respond. And it's whiny. And internalized. It's focused on the issue, not me. It's action free. Non-threatening. Coming from a defensive position as opposed to an offensive position. Passive, not active.

Now one of the big problems we have in society is people are uninformed. They only read and see that which agrees with them, and the algorithms at Google and Facebook ensure this is the case, after all they want you to use their products, they want you to be addicted, they want your time, they don't want to piss you off.

But if you read/watch a cornucopia of information you get a much more broad insight into what is going on.

I point you first to the piece by Erwin Chemerinsky (dean of the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law) in the "Los Angeles Times" on May 2nd:

"Op-Ed: The brazenly political Supreme Court shows it will strike down abortion rights": https://lat.ms/3KPj5PG

Here's the most important section:

"'Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division.'

Every aspect of this statement is wrong. The reasoning of Roe, a 7-2 decision that was repeatedly reaffirmed by the court, was not weak. For decades before Roe, the Supreme Court held that the liberty of the due process clause protected fundamental aspects of privacy and autonomy. Prior to Roe, the court had protected liberties such as the right to marry, the right to procreate, the right to use contraception, the right to control the upbringing of children and the right of every person to choose 'whether to bear or beget a child.'

Roe followed these decisions with the common sense realization that laws that prohibit abortion and force a woman to carry a pregnancy to term against her will are intrusions on her autonomy and privacy. Unless the court is going to repudiate all of the other privacy rights, it is impossible to deny that laws prohibiting abortion also intrude on a woman's liberty."

Next I point you to Aaron Tang's (a professor of law at UC Davis) piece which is also in the "Los Angeles Times":

"Op-Ed: The Supreme Court Flunks abortion history": https://lat.ms/3KOwEPt

All of this is pure gold. It refutes Alito's screed with facts.

"But the most shocking aspect of the leaked opinion is something else entirely: the glaring historical mistakes that pervade its supposedly originalist analysis. Contrary to the draft's conclusion, for as long as America has existed, so too have abortions — in most cases free of any form of criminal punishment."

You should really read this Tang article because it completely refutes Alito's analysis. Which is that there's no constitutional right to an abortion and therefore it must be thrown back to the states to make or not make law.

You see the Republicans got out there first, with their spin. That the Justices' hands were tied, that they were only doing what was required. And this has been repeated ad infinitum. As for the other side...the only thing that has gotten traction is Alito's quotation of Sir Matthew Hale, who "had at least two women executed for witchcraft and wrote a treatise supporting marital rape": https://bit.ly/3MYlNUN This is like taking legal advice from Charles Manson.

In other words, Alito is cherry-picking what he wants from history and assumes the general public will just buy what he is saying and move on. Betting if there is any correction at all, it won't get much amplification, never mind traction.

Which brings me to S.E. Cupp's segment on CNN: https://cnn.it/3MWw3fY

Every lefty must watch this, to see the right's strategy, they're on the same page, they're saying that the leak of Alito's draft opinion is worse than January 6th, really! Watch this to know what you're up against. This is a machine with talking points it keeps hammering again and again to the point where its audience knows and believes what is said, irrelevant of veracity. Ever have an argument with someone who has got the facts wrong? That's what my e-mail is like. I mean if we can't agree on the facts, how can we have a discussion?

And Putin's strategy is to tire you out with misinformation so you'll give up and stay home.

This is not all by accident, it is planned. And the right wing has its vocal troops in alignment.

Where is the left wing?

HOME ALONE AND SCARED!

More Abortion

"Don't let someone tell you to be optimistic. This requires a rethink. Something out of the box. A long ball thrown. All this bs about the system and protests are just that. We need a general strike, or something else dramatic. The system is rigged against us and to believe the system will save us is fallacious."

I wrote that yesterday to a friend whose wife felt he was defeated. And that that was not helping the cause.

Don't be optimistic.

Don't go out and protest.

Don't think that someone else will do the job.

Do not believe the government and its elected officials will solve the problem.

To protest in the street is too sixties. That's what we did before we could reach the world with one keystroke. Furthermore, the Trump era showed us it didn't make any difference, the bad actors just went on their merry way and ignored the mass gatherings.

And I'm not saying to employ the internet for a fake consciousness-raising program. Like the Ice Bucket Challenge, and that's a good one. Changing your picture on social media, retweeting something, that does little good, don't bother.

But you could employ cyberwarfare.

Now let me go back. I'm not advocating breaking the law. But you may have to in order to move your ball down the field, especially when someone else has rigged the game.

It's not like this is the first time democracy has been in peril.

And what does the public do when it doesn't get its way, when the minority, and frequently the wealthy, lord their policies over them?

THEY GO ON STRIKE!

Let's start there, every Monday everybody in America who is pro-choice refuses to go to work. Donezo.

But I may lose my job!

If you're not willing to risk your job, you're not dedicated to change. And there is strength in numbers. Maybe only a few people stop working the first Monday, but as the Mondays ensue, the group will grow and grow until...

Let's be clear, it's Disney's employees that made the company stand up for LGBTQ rights. So, DeSantis passed an inane law that will raise taxes on his constituents to punish Disney. And what has Disney done? FIGHT BACK! Yes, Disney says under the agreement it signed with the state, Florida can't change the law without paying it a billion dollars. And now residents of Disney's domain are suing Florida. Why is everybody so fearful of losing something that they cower instead of fighting back? The right fights back, but not the left. Or when it does there's so much infighting that those fighting back are ostracized.

You've got to cause disruption. Didn't we learn that in the first decade of this century? It was Shawn Fanning who brought the music business into the modern world. Those in power at the labels wanted no change. But the people did, they were sick of paying double-digit dollars for CDs with only one good track. Was Napster breaking the law? Ultimately a court decided it was copyright infringement, but then KaZaA, without a centralized database, came online and the legal questions got ever more complicated.

I could recite the history of the evolution to music streaming but it was third parties, not in the industry, pirates in some cases, who pushed the ball forward. Yes, there were economic consequences. But the future we're in now...record label revenues are up, manufacturing costs have been eliminated and some people got lost in the shuffle but others have done very well. Furthermore, the customer can now get the history of recorded music for ten bucks a month, ain't that great!

But when it comes to the big issues, politics, and abortion, the Democrats have to color between the lines, they're afraid of touching the third rail. And when a Republican does, they're embraced by the party, can you say Matt Gaetz or Madison Hawthorn or Marjorie Taylor Greene? And then you've got Kevin McCarthy, who is denying what he said even though it was recorded! Do you expect to beat these people by playing by the established rules? You can't.

As for cyberwarfare... Attack anti-abortion organizations. Any institution involved in restricting access to abortion...is in the crosshairs. The loonies on the right think guns will ensure their freedom, hogwash, he or she who employs technology controls the country, never forget it. Put a few hackers on the case and there can be turmoil nearly instantly. As far as stopping it, they haven't found the Supreme Court leaker yet, and even if the culprit is found the legal system works very very slowly. Didn't we learn this with Napster, et al? That the ball keeps moving even though you sued?

And the right protests at abortion clinics with guns. Pro-choice people have to block access to right wing institutions physically, this will gain much more attention than showing up at some federal building with a flag.

And the effort must be continuous. What happened today is gone tomorrow in the internet era. Ukraine is already back to being the top headline, three days later! That's right, abortion has been pushed down. That's yesterday's news.

Trump keeps propagating his b.s. story about the election being stolen...

The left wing cries once and goes home.

It's not like the strategies aren't extant.

As for Fox News... Go surround Tucker Carlson's home and studio in Maine (or Rupert Murdoch's!). Piss him off. Prevent him from broadcasting. This guy believes he's got a free pass. It's legal to protest, go for it.

And it's not about the number of people you gather, but getting news traction. Passive general protests don't even get above the fold coverage anymore.

Almost all of the creative people are on the left. They can't come up with any ideas?

Netflix employees are afraid of what Dave Chappelle says about trans people. I'd think they'd be more upset about the lack of abortion rights. Make Netflix stand with them. Or else...they go on strike.

All those corporations, who've oftentimes given money to anti-abortion causes...they must be made to testify, to take a stand, pro-choice. It's not like they haven't taken stands on social issues before, long before the government. Like providing benefits to non-married same sex partners. If you expect the government to lead...

The newspaper will print the facts.

It's up to the public to take action.

And the public has so many options, so many tools in its belt.

And the story of history is one person changing its course, revealing truths. Whether it be Daniel Ellsberg or Edward Snowden or the leaker of Alito's draft.

Yes, they leaked, the court will never be the same. The processes have been perverted. Have you been paying attention the past couple of decades? The right has been perverting the cause of justice constantly!

And the Supreme Court Justices are just people, they are not gods.

Sure, it would be great if there were term limits. All this stuff the process won't deliver.

But people will change, when you force them to, when you make life so difficult they've got no option, at least not an economic one.

Yes, it all comes down to economics in America. Every single thing. Which is why the revolt has been so tempered so far. People with enough money...they're worried about where they're going on vacation, the travel industry is through the roof. And they know they can fly young Ava or Aurelia to another state if they need to terminate a pregnancy.

If you don't make the people with money suffer, you'll never get real change.

I'm not saying to be violent.

But I am saying passive protest is passé. When Martin Luther King, Jr. was agitating for equal rights there were three TV networks and tens of millions of people watched!

And there's been white backlash for eons. Don't take away my chance, my job, anything. No one can lose anything in America anymore. Talk about socialism...I'm entitled to my job, my income, don't tax me...I could go on and on.

Not that I want to muddy the waters. Let's start first and foremost with abortion.

Coming out as gay...that helped ensure gay rights. Some women are coming out with their abortion stories... Hell, maybe if these wankers found out their sister had an abortion, or their hero, they'd re-evaluate their position. Remember, the fight against opioids only really gained traction when the sons and daughters of middle and upper class whites got addicted and died.

You've got to bring it home.

We live in an information age, we can use information to our advantage.

The "New York Times" printed victims of 9/11 in their pages, how about victims of abortion, day after day after day. The deaths of yore, never mind the more recent terminations.

But we've got to be together, organized. The right gets everybody in line, why can't the left?

Oh, the left is a supposed big tent, that accommodates all voices.

Well, someone needs to make a decision and get everybody on the same page. And that person is a leader. Someone who can motivate the troops. And believe me, this is a war.

So far democracy is losing. The changes will come to your front door. Better to start battling now before it's too late.

The MoFi Desperado

https://bit.ly/3y7IXUs

1

"Desperado" was a stiff when it was released. It's not like it didn't sell at all, but there were no hit singles, it didn't burn up the chart, it didn't even get banged on FM radio. That didn't happen until later, after the release of "On the Border," with its number one single "Best of My Love." And then the following year "One of These Nights" cemented the Eagles as the biggest band in the land. All summer you heard the title track, "Lyin' Eyes" and "Take It to the Limit" incessantly, on both AM and FM, and despite Steely Dan ultimately singing "turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening," only hipsters pooh-poohed the band, just to hear that intro to "One of These Nights" was to go on an aural trip into the ether of California, when the state was still a dream as opposed to an object of derision.

And then came "Hotel California."

It's rare that the heavily expected follow-up to the monster hit exceeds expectations. "Hotel California" was a leap forward, with more hooks, more insight and phrases that entered the vernacular, like "life in the fast lane." "Hotel California" cemented the band's legacy, they were no longer just hitmakers, they were seers, chroniclers of life...if you don't resonate with "Wasted Time" you never had a breakup.

But what about "Desperado"?

I bought it the day it came out. At this point the Dude and so many more put down the Eagles, but back in 1973, they were just another band with a good debut album with a hit single. Albeit a monster.

Maybe you didn't buy the album, but if you did you heard not only the follow-up single "Witchy Woman," but magical tracks like "Earlybird" and "Tryin'" and you wanted more. That's what fans always want, more. And it's a responsibility to deliver something of equal or better value. Which most acts abdicate, frustrating their fans. That's what is astounding about the Beatles' output, they never missed. And neither did the Eagles.

And the insider hype for "Desperado" was heavy and hot. There were endless stories in music magazines about the western theme, the photography session, the fact that Jackson Browne was included, along with J.D. Souther, tied the knot for all those following the Southern California music scene, dreaming if they could only live there their lives would work.

But the album came and as I said above, nothing happened.

But like I also said above, the one thing a fan wants more of is the music, so people later went back and bought "Desperado" and discovered its magic and it slowly grew in the public consciousness to the point when Don Henley steps up to the microphone and starts singing the title song it's the highlight of the show.

Now you did not need a big stereo rig to get the Eagles, but it helped, especially with "Hotel California," and then shortly thereafter Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours." This was not two track low fidelity and if you had a good system you could extract nuggets that those listening through the speaker in the car dash could not.

But now those systems are passé. They're not the dream they once were. That was your number one desire, a great stereo. They had stores dedicated to selling you just this. You went and marveled at the equipment, contemplating what you'd buy next as you built your system, or upgraded it. And to sit or lie in front of the speakers, stoned or not, and listen to the music and let your mind drift...was the height of life. Music was not the background, a complement to your activities, it was your activity, it was life.

So how many people have the equipment to hear the aural truth in the MoFi version of "Desperado"? Very few.

Not that my expectations were high. I've still got my vinyl, I've got the CDs, how much is left to extract from the master tapes?

Turns out plenty.

I was shocked. I learned that Don Henley was right. His vocal on "Desperado" could have been improved. I always thought it was nitpicking, another artist who could never be satisfied. But when Henley sings it live it's not just another song, it's a summation of not only a lifestyle, but all our lives, a better life, one in which limitations were less, where we explored the fringe and some got stuck out there and some made it back and artists chronicled the journey.

I'm listening now and I'm hearing the treatment of Henley's vocal, the strings in a new way. The song is so great it can't be killed, but someone needs to let the band loose, which ultimately Bill Szymczyk did thereafter.

Glyn Johns did not take the Eagles seriously. They made the albums on his terms. In his way. When true artists have a vision and want to do it their way. "Desperado" was cut in dull and dreary London, whereas the Eagles were not about constriction, but an opening up, a superseding of limits. And the title track is controlled in a way that what comes after is not.

2

The second side of "Desperado" has a cover of David Blue's "Outlaw Man." I had to buy Blue's album to hear his take, it was not as good. But it fit the theme of "Desperado" perfectly so the Eagles included it.

But the second side also includes "Certain Kind of Fool" and "Bitter Creek," the songs I love most on "Desperado" along with the title track.

"He kinda had a craving for something no one else could see"

That's what it takes to be a rock and roll star. There's no school, you just have to have a vision, believe in yourself and execute, and you still might not make it. Oftentimes you're the only one who believes, but you want it so bad.

"He wants to sing, oh yeah
He wants to see lights a-flashing
And listen to the thundering"

What he wants is to let loose, to be free, the freedom of yore, which was more about what you thought than what you did.

"They got respect, oh yeah
He wants the same, oh yeah"

Some things never change. Isn't this the essence of hip-hop?

And "Certain Kind of Fool" is sung by Randy Meisner, an integral part of the group until he stopped delivering on stage and was ultimately excised and replaced. Henley and Frey wrote it with him. But Meisner's nearly pained vocal conveys an emotion that makes the whole number believable.

But "Bitter Creek" was something different.

"Once I was young and so unsure"

Now everybody knows everything. We see preteen entrepreneurs. Everybody wanting to skip the discovery process of life, trying to figure out who they are. But back in the seventies that was part of growing up. You might ultimately go down a career path, but before you did you wanted to drive cross-country, see the Rockies, get high, try and figure it out, and then you'd take the experience into everything you did thereafter.

"Out where the desert meets the sky
Is where I go when I wanna hide"

Hiding, it's the opposite of today's social media world. Do you ever feel you just want to retreat, lick your wounds, be free of the incoming, try to soothe yourself? I certainly do, and this is when tracks like "Bitter Creek" resonate so much.

"I can't wait to see the old man's face
When I win the race"

There was a generation gap. Not only could our parents not believe in our paths, they couldn't even understand them. We had something to prove. And the best of us did.

We were desperadoes.

3

"Desperado
Why don't you come to your senses
You've been out ridin' fences
For so long now"

The dream. We held on to it for as long as we could. We thought it could work, but it didn't. And one by one we sold out. But we never forgot.

That lumpy guy in the bad suit? In his heart he was a desperado, and still is.

That guy in the boardroom? He may be rich but he'd rather be a rock star, he wants to be a desperado.

Everything was possible, and we wanted to get our share.

"Desperado
Oh, you ain't getting no younger
Your pain and your hunger
They're driving you home
And freedom, oh, freedom
Well that's just some people talking
Your prison is walking through this world all alone"

You wake up one day and you realize your life is no longer working. What you dedicated yourself to has not panned out. Your life is hard. You've been flying solo, forgoing the treats of humanity, the comforts. The touch, the conversation, everything everybody can't see that means so much. It's not on your resumé, you can't see it on LinkedIn, but it's everything.

"You're losing all your highs and lows"

This is when you know you've got to give up, take another direction. When the dope no longer gets you high. When you're going through the motions and getting less and less satisfaction, fewer and fewer highs.

"Why don't you come to your senses"

We wouldn't listen to our parents, we had to hear it from people we trusted, who we knew were trying to channel truth, who understood us.

"Come down from your fences
Open the gate"

Buy a ticket. Take a chance. It's as true at seventy as it is at twenty. I know you've been beaten and bruised, but there are still rewards in life if you'd just take a chance. As Jackson Browne sang in "The Late Show" the next year:

"You could be with somebody who is lonely too
(Sometimes it doesn't show)
He might be trying to get across to you
(Words can be so slow)"

"But there's a rainbow above you"

Hope is everything in this world, it's the silver lining, without it you're done, you're paralyzed, in mind if not body. You've got to believe things can get better.

"You better let somebody love you
Before it's too late"

As the boomers aged, as the songs on the hit parade came and went, "Desperado" started to shine in a way it had not before. You could give up the dream and still be whole. What you thought was selling out could easily be buying in. Instead of waiting for the perfect love, finding a companion, a person who'll be there for you, is what makes life endurable, worth living.

So "Desperado" has become a secret anthem. A song that means something to listeners that others do not. It's not a ditty, people believe it's their life, that Don Henley has looked into their soul and understands them, is nudging them to move on down the line, to give up being an outlaw and embrace the good in life. He's setting your head straight. You don't really want to be a desperado.

Except when you're out in the wilderness.

Except when you're at the Eagles show.
