Love On The Spectrum U.S.

This is riveting television.

It will make you smile and it will bring tears to your eyes. As a matter of fact I'm holding back the waterworks right now.

You know someone on the spectrum. Even though they may not even know it themselves. But in the last thirty years incredible advancements have been made.

The spectrum... Usually with every little thing taken away, something is added back in. You'll be wowed at Subodh's mathematical skills.

So that's what this show is about, people on the spectrum dating, many for the very first time.

Do you remember the first time you went on a date? Remember your anxiety? Somehow this show gets it right better than any movie. There's anxiety, wishin' and hopin', and a fear of playing the game.

We've got Dani who not only has an undergraduate degree, but a master's too. She seems so competent, but the longer you're exposed to her the more her issues are revealed. The diagnosis. It wasn't until she was nearly an adult that her aunt realized she was on the spectrum. And usually this is a relief, it explains so much.

Like the people making fun of you. You're trying your best, but you just can't read the signals. But you want what everybody else does, love.

Boys don't talk about it. They say they want a girlfriend, and then they shuck and jive and you realize you'd better start cracking jokes too or you'll become a pariah. You don't want to be sensitive around the guys, you'll be labeled a sissy and ostracized. Hopefully you find your people, but some people never do. And then there are others who yearn to be accepted into a group that in truth they'd rather not belong to. But the inner desire to be accepted, that never goes away. And everybody is sensitive, they just might not show it.

As for the girls? Sure, they can be catty, but they're also supportive. They dream, they fantasize, they know what they want and even articulate it, but getting it? That's harder.

And even harder if you're on the spectrum.

The signs start coming early. You get kicked out of pre-school. You have trouble making friends. Everybody tells you to fly straight but you don't know you're not, you just know you're not approved of, and that feels awful.

Hopefully you can get into a special program tuned to your needs. But frequently you have to have money and tenacious parents. And with both parents working outside the house and the hurdles you need to jump to get government assistance, it's hard. And then you become an adult and no one cares about you anymore, you're on your own. And if you can work at all, you can't pay your bills. Just pull yourself up by those bootstraps why don't you!

And it is a spectrum. They no longer call it "Asperger's." So there are people on both ends of what I describe above, highly functional and less functional, but one thing is for sure, you never detach from your parents, who worry about how you'll survive after they die.

Loneliness. It's the scourge of America. That's what's great about the internet, you can find your people. Sure, there's a lot of hate, but those who decry screens are denying the need to connect, to talk. Of course this connectedness comes at a price, hate and showing off, but all progress comes with negatives, you've just got to adjust your vision, because the past is never coming back.

So the six episode series starts with people who are yearning for love, but they don't know how to get it. There are coaches.

And then they dive in.

Will the other person accept their autism?

This is a big issue for Dani. And Kaelynn too. Once the boys find out who they really are, will they dump them?

There are so many interesting plot twists, but in this case they are real.

Maybe you can't watch this. Because you can't own your feelings. You can't own your needs.

And on some level it's painful, because you see where your own inadequacies are, none of us are perfect.

But the humanity shines bright! In a country where everybody's trying to become rich and famous, in truth most people are just living their lives, and the penumbra is ultimately irrelevant, it all comes down to the personal, your feelings.

It's conversation, it's touch.

One of the things I like most about being in a relationship is the floor. What I mean by that is when you're involved with another person your feelings only get so low. But if you're alone...you can sink to the point of suicide. You're bouncing off the walls. And not everybody has a community around them. And as Chris Rock says, you get married because you don't want to be the oldest guy in the club. Yes, you age out of a lot of behaviors. And if you're old and single... It's a couples world and some will include you as a third or fifth wheel, but you don't always count on it and after the conversation you go back home alone.

You'll breeze through the series in a day. Because you're instantly invested, you want to know what happens.

We're all looking for truth. And in most reality television there is none.

But that's at the heart of "Love on the Spectrum U.S." WATCH IT!

Zach Bryan

Have you listened to this album? IT'S A REVELATION!

The insider buzz got to me. How could a guy have the same last name as one of the biggest stars in country music? I couldn't take him seriously. But when I started seeing his name everywhere...

Let's be clear, I'm not talking about consumer publications, that's hype. I'm talking about trade publications. There's hype there too, but they're really focused on numbers, and they're all talking about Zach Bryan, so I decided to check out the music.

And I'm stunned. This is closer to 1972 than 2022. This is mostly one guy on his acoustic guitar, singing from the heart.

So I start to do some research.

I'm late to the party. This guy had indie success, he's got a hit on the country chart. But how is anybody supposed to know?

Also, you dig deeper and you see his music was featured in one of Spotify's fakokta new programs, promoted by the streaming company. But that's not the interesting part of that story, but the fact that people continued to play it. You can get it on the playlist, but will people listen to it more than once, will they save it?

The music is so AUTHENTIC!

Authenticity is rare these days. Do I really care what Britney Spears has to say about the Texas school shooting? At first I couldn't find any musician weighing in, but then I searched. Were any of them canceling gigs, putting their careers on the line? Of course not, that would be too much to risk. They're no different from the Republicans, they offered thoughts and prayers. Remember when Boston called on James Brown to quell riots? Who would you call today?

The acts are so busy selling out that when you encounter authenticity you're stunned, you're drawn to it.

And it didn't happen in rock. Because rock considers streaming the devil. Did you watch that Ted Gioia YouTube video with Rick Beato? It's laden with so much b.s. I wanna puke. Why don't people understand that streaming saved the recorded music business instead of killed it? As for Sony and Warner immediately selling their shares in Spotify, they didn't do that because they thought it was gonna tank, they wanted that money right away, to add to their bottom line. If you think major label executives are thinking long term, you've never seen their contracts. All the action, the upside, is in the bonus, just like in Silicon Valley it's in the low-priced stock options.

Not that anybody on the inside is going to listen to Ted Gioia. But my inbox is full of recs of this video. Yes, the key is to sell physical recordings, that's the future for artists? Huh??? Do you see the movie studios putting all their energies into DVDs? Hell, it's all about getting the product as soon as possible on their proprietary streaming services. And vinyl? Talk to anybody in the recording business, vinyl is an inherently flawed reproduction method and the vinyl "warmth" you're hearing is mostly distortion. Never mind the inherent problems with the needle being at a different angle in every groove. And all these damn records are cut digitally to begin with. And now streaming services allow you to listen to them at HIGHER than CD quality. But you're telling us to go back to vinyl? To come out with a better vinyl record? That's like movie studios championing VHS tapes.

And there's no understanding of popular music and the money involved. It's a business.

I could go on and on, and not all of what Gioia says is wrong, but too much of the nuts and bolts is, and he'll be steering the wannabe musicians and even the real musicians the wrong way. It's not only the Republicans who are prey to misinformation.

Anyway, turns out Zach Bryan was in the military. And he's from Oklahoma. I listened for right wing b.s., which permeates the country scene, I couldn't find it right away, but I'm not sure it's not there. But there are THIRTY FOUR SONGS! Yes, Zach Bryan's new album, "American Heartbreak," is two hours long. That's double the length of "Exile on Main Street." It's gonna take a long time for me to digest this. But I wanted to hear it, I listened to the whole damn thing, it was more interesting than any of the usual suspect podcasts, more genuine, more lifelike, it's what music can do that no other art form can, assuming you're trying to get it right.

That's the funny thing about music. Play the game by the rules and the result is rarely transcendent and ubiquitous. But go on your own hejira and your honesty might resonate with the public, blowing you up in a way that could not be foreseen.

And if you listen to Zach Bryan's hit, with 92 plus million streams on Spotify, you'll find "Heartbreak South" is sans all the studio tricks, it's got a feeling of life absent from all the stuff on the hit parade. And he's singing about being alienated and misunderstood, remember when that was the essence of hit music as opposed to bragging about how rich you are or singing about how you love your family?

And "Heading South" is almost three years old.

And those focusing on the marketing as opposed to the music will talk about the "Yellowstone" synchs, when the truth it's in the MUSIC!

I mean start playing "American Heartbreak" from the top. You'll be amazed, this is not in-your-face, this is just someone playing their music, you're eager to lean in.

And unlike too many lauded singer/songwriters, Zach Bryan has a good voice. Bob Dylan could get away with having a less than perfect voice, BUT HE WAS THE BEST LYRICIST OF ALL TIME!

Another thing about "American Heartbreak," its success is ahead of the usual suspect sites. I couldn't find credits for the album on AllMusic or Discogs, which are usually extensive. The guy is in the spotlight, but the album in so many ways is still a mystery.

But one thing I can tell you is that Zach Bryan did not do it how everybody else does it these days, HE WROTE THE SONGS HIMSELF! At least that's how it appears based on my research, like I said, there's so little info.

But really it's all about the music.

In case you haven't been paying attention, the biggest album of the last eighteen months has been Morgan Wallen's "Dangerous," another double album. But on Bryan's more than double album there's none of the studio trickery, it's not overproduced, it's closer to one of the initial, magical Bonnie Raitt records, with that homemade feeling.

Maybe Zach Bryan is so good because he's been removed, in Oklahoma and the Navy, he's not in Hollywood groveling for attention.

Not that Bryan is Dylan, and...

You may click to stream and turn "American Heartbreak" off immediately. It's not noisy enough, not punk, not loud enough. Or maybe you'll lament the absence of beats. But that's just fine, because there are enough people looking for this stuff to build an audience and a career.

Zach had to prove it independently before Warner got on board. That's the majors for you, they don't believe in it until you prove it, they don't want to take a risk.

But Zach Bryan is not a business story, it's a MUSIC story.

And I'm not gonna provide any links. Either you're interested in checking him out or you're not. That's right, a real music fan makes an effort...is looking to be plucked from the desert, saved by what they cannot articulate, but they know it when they hear it.

And in this case it is Zach Bryan.

Hacks-Episode 6

You know when you do something great.

Conventional wisdom is no one knows anything in Hollywood. Only hacks believe that. Certainly when it comes to music, some songs are UNDENIABLE!

My favorite story here involves Al Kooper. He was being inducted into the Guitar Center RockWalk and we're sitting in the green room after the ceremony and Lonn Friend was interviewing him, he'd scored that gig, and Al said that Lynyrd Skynyrd cut "Sweet Home Alabama" a year before it came out.

He was in Atlanta, he'd moved there because of the music scene, funny how it's one of the epicenters of hip-hop today, and he'd signed Lynyrd Skynyrd to his label Sounds of the South and had recorded the first album and "Free Bird" was just starting to gain notice and Ronnie Van Zant called him up and said the band had a new song they needed to cut right away, and Al booked the studio time and they cut the track and like I said above, it wasn't released for another year. So I asked Al if he knew it was a hit. And he said...IT WAS SWEET HOME ALABAMA!

If you listen to the John Fogerty podcast, you'll hear the story of how he wrote "Proud Mary," as well as how he decided to start playing Creedence songs live again. I don't want to step on the story, but the bottom line is he wrote nearly all of "Proud Mary" in a flash, alone. And when he was done he felt like he'd written a standard, something on the level of Stephen Foster, something that would last forever. HE KNEW!

So the arc of this season of "Hacks" is Deborah Vance, i.e. Jean Smart, has lost her residency in Vegas... That happened last season, but now I'll give a spoiler alert, even though you know how these shows play out, maybe you want to be surprised and can stop here but...

Deborah goes on the road to hone her new routine. She's throwing out the old, the stale one that worked for decades in Vegas, and is starting with a clean slate, she wants to tell her story, she wants to be honest.

But it's not working.

Get this straight. She's come down from the mountaintop. She had a steady gig in Vegas baby, and now she's back on the road, paying her dues, in small clubs, in secondary, TERTIARY markets and you'd think a star of her caliber would kill, but that's not how it plays out. She keeps missing the mark, she wants to give up.

That's another thing, the greats not only know when they've hit a grand slam, created an 11, they also wrestle with giving up. If you haven't thought of giving up, you're probably a hack. Because a true great may project an image of confidence, but inside many feel like a fraud. After all, they need the success to make themselves complete, it's all that counts, success, they're just that damaged.

And after you decide to stick with it, the light bulb does not go on instantly, you just have a little more oomph, a little more inner strength that keeps you keepin' on. You're in the creative wilderness, looking for hooks. And if you're honest with yourself, you know what's B material. You not only know what is B material, but B+ too. You need to be in the A category to play, especially today. An A- will get you notice, but to transcend the pack, to truly gain traction with the public, you need a solid A, and hopefully an A+.

And the dirty little secret is no one can reach that level every time out, NO ONE! Furthermore, the best stuff usually comes when you're not even trying. You're taking a shower, you're driving in your car, you're out and about and suddenly you have a blast of insight. And sometimes the insight feels good but ultimately is not good, but then there are other times when your adrenaline starts to pump, you know you're on to something, and you know you have to commit, catch lightning in a bottle, or the moment may pass, your opportunity will be history.

Deborah keeps missing the mark.

But then it comes to her in a flash. Like my shrink says, sometimes you change one little thing and the whole picture changes. And suddenly she's back on track, it all works and now she wants success even bigger than she had, more than Vegas and...

This is a business built on dishonesty. Either people are falsely humble or falsely bragging. It takes years to understand the game. Actually, someone had me going today, and then I got off the phone and realized I knew much more about the subject than they did, but they had me convinced for a while there, I just needed to step back and give it some context.

And when you hit a grand slam, create an 11, you're not thinking about the money, the sponsorships, none of the crap that the amateurs can't stop talking about. No, you get this feeling inside, like you've climbed Mount Everest. You've planted your flag but you're solo, there is no audience, it's just you, and that's enough.

Sure, after the fact, when the track is released, you might get the accolades, even win an award. But if you think it's about the award you've probably never been in the zone and hit it far over the fence, nearly 600 feet. Which is why the greats put their Grammys in the bathroom, if they even know where they are.

The feeling of victory is fleeting. On one hand you're excited, on the other you're scared.

You see you want to try again, you need to try again, but you're afraid you won't reach the same level.

And A+, undeniability, is very rare. A great will always produce something serviceable, but something transcendent? If you can do it once or twice a year that's a good record.

And you know it!

Texas/Gun Control

Benghazi.

Hillary's e-mails.

The stolen election.

You know exactly what I am talking about, even if you don't know the underlying facts, because the Republican party hammered these messages every day for years, they kept them top of mind, they still want Hillary locked up, even though she's a doting grandmother sans elected office.

Abortion?

That was last week's news. Or maybe a couple of weeks back there. How long did abortion stay top of mind? Oh, it's gone folks. People don't dig deep, they hit the headlines and move on, they're trying to cope with their own incoming, we're all overscheduled and overwhelmed.

Back in the old days, twelve to fifteen years ago, the left controlled the internet. There were all these victory laps after Obama got elected. The lionization of nerds who ran the online campaign. Since then? Nothing. As a matter of fact, the Democrats have gone on defense, they can't cope with the incoming, Cambridge Analytica...

This is a messaging issue folks. And if you want to change hearts and minds, if you want people riled up, if you ultimately want change, you've got to start at this grass roots level.

Once again, the music business is at the forefront, the canary in the coal mine.

You see there are too many acts and no universal outlet to expose them. There's no MTV, minting stars overnight all over the world, and terrestrial radio has a fraction of the number of active listeners it had previously, no matter what bogus statistics the industry keeps proffering. So where do you go? ONLINE!

Musicians are everywhere. Labels, having realized their reluctance to license their wares hurt them at the turn of the century, are willing to license anybody who can pony up with big bucks today. They realize what looks like nowheresville today can be absolutely crushing it in a matter of months, and you've got to be ready, be prepared to seize the moment.

Everywhere you go online you see musicians hawking their wares.

You know where else you see this tsunami of hype, and that's what it frequently is, false information...POLITICS! On the right, the left is way behind. Yes, every interactive platform is inundated with right wing acolytes spreading their message. Furthermore, they've falsely accused Facebook and Twitter of being left wing havens, when that's not true whatsoever. Check those Facebook stats, it's always the right wing views that are shared most.

Are you getting this? Not only do Republicans own the sphere, they gain even more power by saying they don't!

That's been the Twitter argument, "free speech."

Well, in truth Twitter is not owned by the government and can do whatever it wants, it's a private company, all the social media companies. And unlike the mall cases of yore, saying they were the public square even though they were private property, there are endless places to spew the same stuff all over online, you can even create your own platform, like Truth Social. The barrier to entry is nil. Just like in music. The mall was the only place in town, online we have Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok...never mind websites. You can get your message out. The question is whether these social media outlets have an obligation to allow you to post. OF COURSE NOT! Come on, when the shoe was on the other foot, when David Geffen dropped the Geto Boys, you didn't see these same right wingers crying freedom of speech, and that was when the barrier to entry in the music business was so much higher!

Are you getting this? It's a full court press, 24/7.

And what do the Democrats fight it with? A circle jerk of complaints about the heinosity of the right wing. And not only does it have no effect, it doesn't even reach the intended targets!

Man, we've got to wipe the dead wood from the Democratic party.

And I'd start with Schumer and Pelosi. Both lauded as political professionals, they've got no idea what is going on in America today, because to know that you've got to be online, like youngsters, ALL THE TIME! And what do we constantly hear from left wing educated boomers? The smartphone is the DEVIL! We've got to limit screen time. Meanwhile, the right wing keeps populating the platforms with information and disinformation. I mean you've got to play to win.

AOC bitched about this. The last election cycle. How candidates have to focus their campaigns online, instead of TV and print. But the oldsters blew back. AOC is right!

Sure, older people vote in higher percentages than younger people. But who do you know under the age of 35 who even sees commercials? Youngsters don't have cable, their computer is their television and they watch streaming services with no commercials. So these TV ads aren't reaching them AT ALL!

But the old school reporters inured to the old game parrot the words of the out of touch ancient.

You don't want to be too progressive. You've got to fight for the center, that's the only way you can win. IS THAT HOW THE REPUBLICANS DID IT?

No, the Republicans realized first and foremost you need to stimulate your constituency, rile them up, and give them hope you can effect change. We don't see the equivalent on the left, AND THE LEFT IS IN POWER!

Oh, we hear Democrats crying about Manchin. Well, the Republicans don't have any problem keeping their elected officials in line. Either you get with the program or you're ostracized. They're trying to achieve goals, they're taking the long view.

As for the Democrats? They've got no plans and are just waiting for the future to play out. I don't recognize my country, but the Greatest Generation? They've never seen anything like this. Disputing election results. Conspiracy theories. Listening to Q. Taking the voting power out of the hands of the public and giving it to legislatures and elected officials. This is nuts. And what is the left wing plan? I can't even see one!

Every week Bill Maher said that Donald Trump wouldn't leave office quietly, he'd do his best to stay. And what did the Democrats on his program say? THAT CAN'T HAPPEN! But that's exactly what did!

So the majority of Americans want meaningful gun control.

But what have we got? More and more states allowing open carry.

It's like we're living in bizarroland.

The public will get behind leaders hammering a point. As for the usual suspects on TV and in print, who can believe in those people?

It's not like we haven't seen this movie before, this is not our first school shooting, it's not our first rodeo. But all the Democrats can do is say they can't do anything. To the point where their constituency is completely demoralized.

You want change?

You've got to keep the story alive. And today you do that online. And it's only going to be more so, forget that b.s. about streaming services and their ads, the overwhelming majority pay. You've got to go WHERE THE PEOPLE ARE!

At every level.

The Republicans play the long game, fifty years of trying to get rid of Roe v. Wade. Meanwhile, along the way, abortion rights are tightening, pro-life people are surrounding clinics and killing doctors... Believe me, we've got the same passion on the left, if only they believed they could make a difference!

There are so many ways. The recent California law allowing individual citizens to report gun manufacturers for shirking their responsibilities. Yes, you can force gun companies to cower.

A vigil. That's endless. We did this during the Vietnam era, reading the names of the dead.

We see this time and time again in music. The biggest bands have ARMIES! Remember the KISS Army? And Lady Gaga's Little Monsters? And BTS fans? Cross them, say something negative about their beloved, and they'll track you down and inundate you with hate, over something you wrote/said about a musical act! But do we have these equivalents in politics? Oh yes, on the right, but not the left. If I write anything political I immediately get e-mail from those on the right, they're the first ones in, and they keep at it, no matter what. The left? They respond later, if at all. They're asleep at the wheel.

Hollywood has been completely disrupted, it's not business as usual. And you know what the cause of that was? THE INTERNET!

And 4G/LTE allowed new apps to appear, like Uber.

But when it comes down to Democratic politics...IT'S THE SAME AS IT EVER WAS! It's like the internet didn't even happen.

So if you're a Democrat, I've got to tell you, you're the lobster, you're the frog, you're already in the pot and the water is beginning to boil. But since you're not yet cooked you believe everything's groovy. BUT IT'S NOT!

What did James Carville so famously say? IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!

And he was and still is completely right, everybody in America is selfish, they're watching their money first and foremost and want more. Yes, the right is famous for fighting culture wars, which they ultimately lose, but they know it's not truly about culture, it's about winning elections. Which they are very very good at, whatever it takes.

IT'S THE INTERNET STUPID!

Go on Reddit. Find those OnlyFans women. That's right, sex sells and they want some of that cash. So what do they do? They cross post! They don't post in only one category, but any one they even remotely qualify for. And they post each and every day! Frequently multiple times a day!

That's what YouTube and Instagram "influencers" do too.

Democratic politicians? How do they expect to influence anybody if they don't even play. You decide on your message and hammer it everywhere each and every day, to the point it becomes conventional wisdom, like Biden has dementia, can't put two sentences together, and has accomplished nothing in office. THAT'S COMPLETELY UNTRUE! But the right wing has hammered this everywhere each and every day to the point where even the left wing outlets repeat it. Like the fact that Republicans are gonna win big next November. Where's the campaign to say the opposite? Oh, that's right, the rule tells us it's an off-year election and the other party...

Come on, that's not a rule.

Yes, the Democrats are playing by rules that don't even exist.

And for the right, it's a FREE-FOR-ALL!

And the Republicans are working the angles to boot. I hate to tell you, all those professional sports teams, even college, they're working the angles. Did you see Nick Saban accusing his competition of buying players?

But the left is afraid.

No wonder the right is winning, AND THEY'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO WIN!

Go All The Way 50th Anniversary

It was released fifty years ago Sunday.

The Raspberries were an AM band in an FM world. FM started on the coasts, San Francisco and New York, and by time "Go All the Way" was released every metropolis had an FM outlet. And that meant if you listened to FM you never listened to AM, unless your car only had an AM radio. But by '72 8-tracks were invading cars, you didn't have to listen to the dreck on AM anymore. But some still did.

I never ever heard the Raspberries on FM radio. Sure, somewhere sometime they may have gotten airplay, but the Raspberries were decidedly uncool. Not only were they an AM band, THEY WERE TOO GOOD!

Punk rock did not emerge for a few years, the first Ramones album came out in '76, but that was a reaction to prog, to overbaked records by trained players, not against power pop, which actually had its own renaissance at the end of the decade, and ultimately became part of new wave.

But I knew the Raspberries. You couldn't escape "Go All the Way" and the follow-ups. But I never ever bought one of their records. Why? It seemed formulaic, of the moment, disposable, when in truth it was anything but.

There was coverage in the rock press, mostly about the scratch and sniff sticker on one of their albums, but if you were cool you didn't own Raspberries records. They were never on the bill of the show you wanted to see. And then, all of a sudden...

"Well I know it sounds funny
But I'm not in it for the money"

The Raspberries were getting fantastic reviews. Everywhere. From credible writers. About their 1974 album "Starting Over."

Huh? Just as the band's star was fading, they never had another hit long player, "Starting Over" peaked at #143, the cognoscenti were into them. It's like they grudgingly agreed they liked all their hits and now that AM was no longer interested, they could laud the band from Ohio.

So I bought it.

Oh, to be an active record buyer in the seventies. It meant you hung out at the store, you knew every outlet in town, at one you were a regular known by name, they saved records for you. You read all the rags, had a mental shopping list and went to the store and bought four, five or six records. You needed them, they were as vital as air and water. And they were always a surprise, even the biggest albums only had a few radio tracks, you dropped the needle and went on an adventure.

Which wasn't always satisfying. But that was part of the magic, what you thought would be great wasn't, and what you bought on a whim became your favorite record you testified to everybody about.

And most records went unheard. To get someone to buy an album was a huge feat, to get over that threshold. And the best ways were radio and live, but it was hard to get on the radio and even harder to be seen, especially when no one wanted to pay to come.

"Well if the program director don't pull it
Then it's time to get back the bullet
So bring the group down to the station
You're gonna be an overnight sensation"

"Bullet." This was insider language. Which the hoi polloi didn't know, never mind having no idea there was a program director, never mind what he did.

"I've been tryin' to write the lyric
Non-offensive but satiric too"

Wait a second, weren't the Raspberries mindless AM pap, non-thinking fly-by-nights? No, the band was thinking all about it, which too many acts today do not. It's like the formula's been lost. I mean all you need is verse, chorus, bridge, but that's too much for them, whereas the Raspberries had learned at the feet of the Beatles, that was the starting point for so many of the baby boomer acts.

"I fit those words to a good melody
Amazing how success has been ignoring me
So long I use my bread making demos all day
Writing in the night while in my head I hear
The record play, hear it play"

The game hasn't changed whatsoever, everybody's laboring in obscurity, looking for a hit. I mean you can post it on Spotify, but that doesn't mean anybody will listen to it.

Now I'd never heard "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)" before, I just dropped the needle on the Dual turntable and this sound came out of the speakers, this mini-symphony, an analogue to "Good Vibrations," really, "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)" should be in the pantheon, but it's not. Times had changed. In 1966 AM played everything, in 1974 the playlist was much more constricted, most of the big classic rock tracks never even got played on AM radio, and the Raspberries fell between the cracks.

But I was a fan, I immediately bought Eric Carmen's first solo album, I needed more. And now the public agreed, "All By Myself" was a number one record, however Eric was still relegated to the AM world. But there was more, "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" and a song that Shaun Cassidy ultimately turned into a monster hit, "That's Rock 'n Roll."

Played in bars
I spent my money buyin' new guitars
I screamed my heart out
But how I loved it
That's rock 'n roll"

AND IT MOST DEFINITELY WAS! Scratch a boomer in the music business, they all had an electric guitar and an amp, they all dreamed of making it big, they had bands, they were inspired by the Beatles.

"Well come on everybody
Get down and get with it
Come on everybody
Get down and get with it
Come on everybody
Get down, that's rock 'n roll"

A mash-up of Freddy Cannon and Jan & Dean/the Beach Boys, this is the sound of the early sixties, when rock 'n roll infected the youth, smoothing the cleaving away from the old fogeys, the establishment.

And having proved he could do it, that he possessed the magic, knew what he was doing, Eric proceeded to produce and record his unjustly ignored masterpiece, "Boats Against the Current," which wasn't even available online for eons, you see it was a legendary stiff, I bought my copy as cutout, where all the disappointments came to live, if they weren't buried, literally.

"She Did It" was a very mild hit, with its "Sail On Sailor" intro, but it was too sophisticated for most mindless listeners, this was the analogue to the Beach Boys' "Marcella," but Carmen could populate entire albums with this stuff, which the boys from the beach no longer could.

But the heart of the album literally comes in the heart of the album, track 5 of 8, "Love Is All That Matters." This is late night music, majestic, in an era where corporate rock was dominating, it was akin to a late sixties production, soft and meaningful, heartfelt, almost a male Laura Nyro.

But the piece-de-resistance is the closer, "Run Away," an eight minute opus that will pick you up and fly you away from this mortal coil, will overwhelm you with its richness. Today everything is hard, or pulling directly at your heart, whereas "Run Away" has no concessions, it's just banking on being so damn good that it's irresistible, and it is!

Not that anybody today will admit liking this kind of music. The black jeans and leather jacket crowd hate strings, if something can be perceived as wimpy it is buried, but "Run Away" is part of why classic rock is classic. Brings tears to my eyes listening to it. Never heard it on the radio, never heard anybody talk about it, I just played it turned up loud enough on the JBLs to take up all the space in the room.

There was one victory lap, after the subsequent albums missed the target, I'm speaking, of course, of "Hungry Eyes" from the "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack, a B movie that became a classic, unheralded at first, but a big hit in both the theatre and home video.

I've got this feeling
That won't subside"

You might put on a tough image for the guys, but when you're lying in bed alone at night, what goes through your mind? When you've got more than a crush, you've actually connected, all you can think is about them.
And then...

Nothing.

Hip-hop and the Seattle sound took over the airwaves. AM bands were relegated to the oldies stations, which now existed on FM, but didn't play anything that wasn't known by every member of the audience.

But I found out I wasn't the only one who knew the magic of Eric Carmen and the Raspberries.

And then they re-formed.

That's what you've got to know, so many of the acts of yore that you want to see don't get back together and go on the road because of the economics, the venues won't guarantee enough to meet the costs, and will oldsters show up, on a weeknight, even on a weekend?

But the Raspberries did. For a little bit more than fifteen years ago, and I was there, at the House of Blues.

You know how it is going to see these old heroes, whose records you know by heart, you're rooting for them, urging the little engine that could to gain speed and chug along. But they rarely do. The singer's voice is shot. The sound is a facsimile of what once was. If you know the songs you can fill in the parts, overlook the clams, but it's just nostalgia, you leave the building feeling slightly queasy, you were there, you saw them, but you never need to see them again.

That was not the Raspberries at the House of Blues back in 2005.

And they played "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)," along with "I Wanna Be With You," Tonight" and Let's Pretend," but the finale, the final encore, was...

"Go All the Way." Which we couldn't believe you could say on the radio, then again, Bread had "Make It With You" a couple of years before.

But the stunning thing was the sound, that slap of Wally Bryson's guitar, it was just like the magic coming out of that small speaker in the dash of your car. You thought that was a studio sound, you didn't think it could be replicated live, but Bryson did.

And Eric Carmen still sounded like the guy on the record and...

This was a band.

There aren't many bands anymore. I mean bands with big hits. They're afraid of looking bad, they go out with supporting musicians, hard drives, it's all a little bit fake, and you can tell. But when there are slight imperfections the sound imparts humanity, and absent that element music is just sheen, it bounces off you, it doesn't stick.

It's a lost art. No one practices, hones the sound to get it just right. It's just too much work. But if you wanted a hit record in the old days, when so many people were paying attention, this is what you had to do.

I didn't go all the way with the Raspberries in the beginning. It took a while for me to commit. Which is how so many long-lasting relationships are.

But those are the ones that stick.

The TikTok Backlash

TikTok is the new MTV.

The world runs on information. And he or she or they who knows the most triumphs.

But wait you say, doesn't the world run on relationships?

Yes. But those relationships run on information. Did you see the HBO Max series "Tokyo Vice"? I don't recommend it. It's too slow and not quite good enough, but it all comes down to who knows what and how they use what they know in negotiations, to secure an advantage.

But the old concentrated sources of information are no longer delivering for us. I'm not talking about the big outlets, the NYT, WaPo or WSJ, but the trade papers/magazines. Used to be the best info was from the trade press because they had access, which the hoi polloi did not. They knew the players. But they were also beholden to their advertisers, the industry itself. So to find out negative information required further research, mostly being on the phone with others.

And then "Billboard" went consumer instead of industry. And "Variety" hired insiders, but not being known for music coverage, most people never see it. And "Rolling Stone" went monthly and its news is behind a paywall and...

I just researched to see if "Variety" is behind a paywall. And finding it is not, I clicked on the publication's "Music" tab I found a story on the same topic:

But I would have missed all of this if Apple News+ hadn't featured the "Time" article in my feed. I'm paying for this information, you should too, because without it you're as second class citizen. And while you're at it, subscribe to the digital edition of the "New York Times," irrelevant of your political persuasion, the U.S., if not the entire world, runs on the "New York Times." Did you see the article about the resurgence of the clubs in Ibiza?

Young people are being infected with Covid at a much higher rate than oldsters, who are at a greater risk of dying from the virus. Do youngsters just not care, how will this affect the live business?

But what I'm talking about here is TikTok.

The gatekeepers are gone. Do you know what it's like trying to sell in an era sans gatekeepers? Very hard. Much harder than in the past when you controlled what was played in the radio station (only major label records because of a legal judgment supporting indies, I know, confounding), and the relationship was even stronger at MTV.

But MTV is essentially history and terrestrial radio is a vast wasteland of oldsters and it's young people driving the new music business and the hot place of exposure is not streaming services, although Spotify's custom made playlists and genre playlists help (youngsters are on Spotify, active music listeners are on Spotify, much more than on Apple or Amazon, its two significant competitors), it's TikTok.

TikTok not only grows stars, it makes them!

And conventionally musicians have signed to major labels for the check. But what they're giving up more and more is control. Because music is a business, and the people running the labels need to make money. Mazuma always trumps art, never forget it.

So what you've got is the signed artists complaining, and the unsigned having a free-for-all, and TikTok can aid the labels, but they cannot generate views, which is the essence of the platform.

I know, I know, you don't post on social media and think TikTok is the devil. Well, it's gonna take a long time for you to break, and that's another point, how hit music has detached from the rest of the industry, it used to be one continuous continuum, now they're completely separate. The majors don't want you if you're roots-oriented, musically and/or marketing-wise, the development is too slow, they can't get paid. So if you're doing it independently and succeeding, that's great, but don't complain most people have never heard of you, that requires TikTok. Print isn't even close. That's right, information comes from print, but the youth don't read, they follow trends, go where their buddies do and gain critical mass oftentimes before traditional media even knows.

So, we've had a complete flip from the seventies, when the artists took control from the labels. Now the label is king. You do what they say. They're your own personal gatekeeper, as Prince said back when, you're a slave to the company.

But the game is different now. The cycle is so much faster. And is it really about maximizing the short term or having a career? THE SHORT TERM! The label doesn't care about your career!

And the labels are undercutting the credibility of the artists, of the whole music sphere. The Kid Laroi staging a fake feud with Scooter Braun? That's closer to WWE than classic rock. When they asked for people who would do anything to make it, they didn't mean this, they meant dedication to your craft and working 24/7, not manipulating the audience with falsehoods.

So if you go viral on TikTok you can blow up, even though you were hiding in plain sight, even if the label had marketed your track years ago. That's the story with Glass Animals. And of course there's the Fleetwood Mac/cranberry juice story. The Mac video was spontaneous, but the labels would like more control, they'd rather circumvent the process by paying people, but ultimately the audience is in control, and there are essentially unlimited offerings. The music business is always a harbinger of what comes next in not only media, but the general marketplace. Your competitor is not the usual suspect corporation, but some individual maybe in the middle of nowhere using the new tools to put a spin on the item you didn't foresee. You have to constantly reinvent yourself, or have a monopoly, and even then you've got to have your eyes attuned to both the rearview mirror and the future.

Will the artists win this battle against their labels?

Note, Capitol didn't say Halsey was wrong.

But history tells us protesting against the entity paying you beaucoup bucks never works. As for consumers, it's only a hard core attuned to your plight, and one thing we've seen over and over again, especially with the Tidal launch, is no one has sympathy for wealthy musicians complaining about their income.

Re-Kevin Sutter

Kevin was one of my best friends. We saw a lot of shows in the Seattle area over the years. He was a wealth of knowledge about the business. I learned much. We did not hear from Kevin for a few days so I called the police to check on him. He had passed away. He had COPD and died from a cardiac incident according to the coroner. I and many others will miss him. Love you brother !

Dear Bob,

Kevin's sudden death really took me down. At this state of my life my friends are falling like flies. We used to speak twice a week… shoot the shit… talk radio/record business gossip… recent music and sports.

He made me swear not to talk about his decision to retire. Honestly, that was a decision that came 5 years too late. The business was not kind to him. The new era of radio programmers were disrespectful and it would piss him off. Trust me, none of these people have any sense to speak of. He would have to take inferior projects to make his "nut".

The last few weeks our calls have had an air of tension. He was disinterested in everything I talked about and would hang up on me for no reason. I knew his health was failing by the tenor of his voice. He had an appointment with his doctor, but he felt too weak to attend. I advised him he needed to go. He couldn't drive. I suggested that he take Uber or a taxi. Again, Kevin would chastise me for offering my opinion and asked me not to mention his weak state to anybody; which I complied with.

I owe so much to Sutter. I was fired from Arista when I returned from my honeymoon. Pretty fucked up!

He hired me and it was the beginning of a great relationship. My career blossomed under his tutelage. We had been friends for over 35 years.
I miss him already…

There are lessons in all this… Always call your friends no matter how busy you are. Even a voice mail or a text would suffice. Don't brood.. Don't carry a grudge…

I received word of this a couple of days ago via Anne Leighton, our US PR. I also read the Bob Lefsetz obituary.

Very sad to hear of his passing and last few years of struggle. When we last met in Seattle at a concert, I felt that things were not great for him.
He was a huge help and inspiration regarding the promotion of Crest Of A Knave and kept things rolling on the PR front relentlessly. Drove me mad, sometimes, but the end result was a gold album and a Grammy. In fact, Kevin was the one to call me in the UK very late at night to inform us of the Grammy win.

We've stayed in touch over the years. As soon as we announced the release of a vinyl album, he would reach out to ask for one… which I gladly sent immediately.

His expressions were priceless… "dude" especially.
We went to see David Lynch's "Blue Velvet" when it opened and he became obsessed, quoting the characters constantly.
He spearheaded Icehouse, Tull, Divinyls and so much more.
Our World Party and Waterboys campaigns were famous.
Spoke with Chris Wright today who felt horrible about our loss.
He was so proud to buy his home in Seacliff, LI . It was an amazing house.
Lots and lots of stories.

Sorry to hear about Kevin.

The Silencers owed him a debt of gratitude for his support in the USA.
Even when the American label company turned their backs on us, he didn't. We so wanted to tour the States again to promote A Blues for Buddha, they never did forgive us for not going right back into the studio after the '87 US tour, instead we toured Europe.
By the time we released the 2nd album in"89 they were over us and onto the next thing.

I met Kevin in Houston, 1992, the 9th Annual KLOL Rock&Roll Auction….instant brother. You know exactly what I mean.

Like you, we talked every week for many years, then it eventually tapered off. That's just life sometimes. Still, every couple months, Sutterman would call, ask about me, then proceed to tell me everything about HIM! Just part of his charm.

I'm only learning of his passing from your email, and I am crushed.

Thank you for such a passionate and poignant tribute to a wonderful soul.

Kevin was kind, fun to be around because I felt he knew so much, a hard worker, intense and smart, helpful when I was just starting out, and a super all-around music guy. I had so much respect for him, seeing him every day doing his job well at Chrysalis every day.

I worked over the last 8-9 years on various projects with Kevin. Every phone call was over 30 mins. Likely an hour. He was one of a kind. We recommended each other often for projects. We liked working together. I remember his bike accident when he had an episode. That was scary but he Bounced back. We talked divorce and life He always asked about my kids.

I don't know the last time I talked to him. During the pandemic I know.
Damn. Really bummed to see this one today.

Oh my gosh! This was certainly not news I was expecting to hear when checking my phone a moment ago on Saturday night.

Kevin and I worked at I.R.S. Records together in the '80s, on opposite coasts, and in nearly opposite disciplines (press - radio). But he couldn't have been nicer and more helpful, always the extra mile, always the extra phone call...hell, if I needed anything at all, especially while 3,000 miles from home, Kevin was always there to tell me which subway to take, where the stage door was, what the best deli was...he even introduced me to a few key New York press people who became valuable contacts and friends.

Kevin introduced me to the word "geek." He went one farther to coin the word "geekdom" The word seemed more disparaging in 1984 than it is in 2022 when its something of a compliment, tantamount to "maven." No matter the context, I think of him every time the word comes up in daily dialogue.

Kevin and I worked a few projects as indies in the past decade or two. There are a lot of great Triple A promo specialists, but there was something special about Kevin — his passion, his drive, his caring, and, yes, his absolutely endearing geekdom.

Rest up, old soldier until we meet again.

Thank you for this. I was worried that his passing would go unnoticed in these batsh@#t crazy times.

I met The Sutterman in 82. My passion has always been music (skiing was business for me) and over the years he introduced my to so many artists. With Kevin I was able to dine with Ian Anderson (who was not in a great mood that eve), hung with Huey Lewis, Blue Rodeo and many others. His care packages came regularly and he turned me on to so much new music.

Kevin (and Glynnis) are the Godparents for our oldest. We were tight for 40 years. We had regular check in's where as you know, you were a listener on those calls.

The music business is brutal and most of the time makes no sense - he lived through it all, the highs and too many lows. At Christmas I would send him gift cards to Costco to feed his DVD addiction. I could never repay him for the music he turned me on to - and yes I still listen to Was Not Was and Go West.

He loved his artists and passionately promoting them with anyone. He made me feel like a music industry insider. Loved that guy (he still called me Dude!).

You portrayed Kevin's vibe so well. (He was especially active with us when my brother and I ran the Triple A Summits in Boulder for Gavin up 'til 2000.) Your piece stresses the deeeeeeep camaraderie of our biz, one I only partially found later in the publishing/literary set with editors, lit agents, writing clients…blah blah. Would have been IMPOSSIBLE to replicate something so priceless anyway.

You touched on the importance of creative career reinvention later on, which some talented passionate lifers like Kevin simply couldn't achieve. You often say it's every man for himself, and as gratifying and rewarding our fraternity was/is, many scale a deep chasm towards the end. Maybe that's the price you pay when you do something you adore for a living…

That's a very sad story about Kevin. We spoke on the phone a few times, probably about those things you describe as 'obscure indie records' but he was a music guy. That's what I liked about him. Always coming up with ideas and showing enthusiasm.

Then I got to go to Seattle for the first time, probably around 2007 or 08, and I looked him up and called. He asked where I was staying and said he'd come around and show me Seattle. Long story short, that's exactly what we did. I watched Seattle from his car window and he showed me the sights and finally the cityscape from across the sound. Then he invited me back to his apartment to listen to some tunes and we watched DVDs and just soaked in great music. He was a big fan of David Gilmore live in concert at the time. We traded albums and then he dropped me back to my hotel.

I never forgot those few hours we spent together and one story in particular. Being an Aussie, as we were driving around I asked him how he felt about everyone in the US carrying guns. Its still bizarre to me that the sensible majority have never stood up to the power of the NRA in your weird country, where gun deaths per capita are higher than anywhere else in the world and yet people think they're safer for actually carrying them. So I said to Kevin, what happens on the roads when the inevitable road rage occurs, do people actually brandish guns? And he said yeh, it was a problem, but he had a solution. As we drove along the highway he reached below his drivers seat and pulled out a massive gun and said, "well I've got a bigger one". I looked in astonishment as he put it back away, more than bemused at this typical display of American bravado.

Kevin, was one of the good ones. VALE.

Thanks for your great piece about Kevin Sutter

Kevin was one of my best friends. We met over 35 years ago when he worked for Chrysalis and I was MD at WPYX in Albany, NY. Years later I was looking to make a career change and wanted to get involved with developing websites - this was at the dawn of the Internet age in the mid-90's. Kevin introduced me to Jim McKeon in Seattle and we started a business that continues to this day. I moved to the Seattle area and Kevin and I spent lots of time together - listening to and talking about music, going to shows , and hd loved to show me all the great places to enjoy in the Pacific.Northwest.

My internet company shared offices with Kevin and Jim's firm M3. Both as a former MD and PD on the receiving end of his calls and as a fly on the wall at the M3 offices, I witnessed Kevin's unique style of working records. He was passionate and loved to talk about the music he worked and loved. As years went on we had numerous meals together, conversations about the Seahawks and Mariners, and shared more adventures than I can remember.

Today I join all the others who are truly saddened that we will never get to enjoy his company again. He was a great friend and this is a tragic loss

Dear Bob,

I just wanted to say "Hello," and my condolences to you and everyone who knew and adored the Sutterman. He will always be with us in his humor and uncontrollable wit! I read your letter re Kevin passing away...and just would like to correct some facts and him and I.

First, we met on Long Island, and I was managing a record/CD store in Roslyn NY...called Stone Cellar. He was the local promo guy for Epic... Our first date was a head banging band from England at My Father's Place, owned by Eppy... It was wild and fun. He got promoted to Buffalo and I moved back to Vermont... We dated and got married one year later in Buffalo and eventually moved back to Long Island.

We were married for 14 years.... The reason we split up was because of substance abuse. After 3 years of me going to therapy for what was going on, and the complications associated with substance abuse (coke) I gave him an ultimatum to get help and he wouldn't. So I moved to Scottsdale to take care of my grandmother. We almost got back together 3 times, but the drugs were still in the picture. Unfortunately Kevin was doing coke with friends the day he had a massive heart attack and a stroke.

My Dad, a Neurologist, loved Kevin. My entire family did. They were upset when we got divorced. My Dad called Kevin every day at his hospital, when he had his heart attack in SEA; we all did, he wouldn't let us come see him....Not for years after. I am not sure where you got your information from , but my family LOVED him, and never thought they were better than him. I can't believe he would think that, so please if you can correct that piece of info. Way off base.

I'm not sure that you knew that Kevin was a huge classical music and country fan as well. He and my Dad shared the love of Classical music, and Kevin would find rare pieces of music and send them on to my Dad, and my Dad supplied some of the Classical music with Classical stations in Montreal, Burlington, and Toronto. My Dad was always in touch w him... My entire family always has been in touch w Kevin. Me as well. We talked regularly, and most recently he was upset that everyone around him was dying.... Childhood friends, record /radio friends. He was sometimes in a dark place some of the time and didn't want to talk.

We had annual Christmas parties where we started with a blank tree, and everyone had to bring an ornament, we had great food, fun people and great music and times. He rescued ourt cat ENA out of the garbage can. Named ENO until we found out it was a girl (hee hee).
We had mostly great times and I am very sad in finding out this news. I was the first person they called from the coroner's office. I am deeply saddened. He had great jokes, did a church lady impression and always had us rolling in laughter telling jokes. My family is very sad, and I just want you to have the facts straight... He was a great husband. We are very sad.

Re: The Arista Book

Hi Bob,

Thanks for putting a good word in for Mitchel Cohen's book "Looking For The Magic". Clive and all the music freaks at Arista tried hard for me back in 1980 when my first album came out. I'll always be grateful to all of them for that. I was discovered playing at Kenny's Castaways on Bleecker Street in NYC in July of 1978 when Robert Palmer of the New York Times came to review the headliner. I was opening the show and Don Hill, bless his RnR heart, told Robert he should come early and see the opening act. He came early and wrote a great review that got me signed to Arista.
For me, it was always about the music. I wasn't looking to get famous. That was never my goal. Fame is a joke. I was just looking to make a living making music. Fame didn't do Whitney or Michael Jackson any good. And how much fame can you get? And who cares anyway. We'll all be forgotten at some point down the road no matter how much fame any of us have.

Make no mistake, I'd love to be stinkin' rich. But surviving and getting to make music and make a living with it was always my goal. I've put out 9 albums in the last 12 years on my own label, River House Records. Wall Street doesn't lose any sleep over how well they do but with the support of great fans and refusing to give in, I've been able to make albums I'm really proud of, tour in Europe and the states all these years, pay my bills, and have more fun than ever with all of it.

In 1980 I got to open a tour for The Who across the U.S. It was incredible. If you told me when I was a teenager that I'd get to see The Who from the side of the stage night after night and get to open for them and be able to make albums and a living from the songs I wrote I'd have thought you were smoking too much crack. Now, 42 years after my debut album on Arista, I'm getting to open for The Who again in Bethel, NY on May 28. It's full circle for me. You can't make this stuff up. God bless their manager, Bill Curbishley, and Pete and Roger for all their support and generosity.

As I said, for me, it was always about the music, not the glory or the fame. At the end of the day, if the music can bring a hint of redemption, salvation and some joy, to me and others, while being alive here on this earth in these troubled times, count me in. It's more than worth it.

Here's to passion. Here's to believing in what you do no matter what the cost. And here's to more music and magic on the road ahead.

Well done Mitchell on your fine book! And thanks Bob for shining a light on it.

?Thanks for the great interview with Jeff Skunk Baxter. He went to the Taft School in CT as mentioned on your interview. He didn't mention he ended up donating to the school a small but incredible recording studio that featured a 16 track tape recording console and some solid outboard gear that lived in the basement of the school library.

When I visited the school in 1988 on my tour of boarding schools that was the main draw for me. I ended up choosing to go to Taft because of Skunk and ended up practically living in that studio during my time there having fun making music

I was in the record distribution biz when The Bee Gees Sgt Pepper album was released, and we were shipped a bunch of pallets , all "on wheels", to be returned before the bill came due. This let RSO report huge sales based on product that never stuck, but gave all the RSO honcho's their sales bonuses on a "hit" album that never was, and let us hit our sales goals. So many games were played and so much unneeded product crated that ultimately went into cutout bins or landfills somewhere. The whole business was constructed so that a few "moguls" could prosper and leave the creators in the dirt. Has it changed, or are we still dealing with the wheels and the road they run on?

Hey Bob .... I look forward to reading the Mitchell Cohen Arista book as the Outlaws my client in 1974 was the 1st rock act signed to Arista Records. Bob Fieden an Arista A&R ma found the band through Peter Rudge who managed Skynyrd at the time suggested Bob see the band. Bob saw the band play with Skynyrd in Orlando and next thing you know Clive was in Columbus GA and soon after we were launching a career. Many battles with Clive over song selection for records but some of the best and most dedicated people I have had the pleasure of working with in my 47 plus years... Bob Fieden, Rick Dobbis, Michael Klenfner, Michael Lippman, Rose Marino Richard Palmese all the mention of still bring a smile to my face. I look forward to reading the book.

Now back to the biggest touring summer in history.

In 1988 When most a&r men could have cared less about me or what I had done (play on the Rolling Stones' METAMORPHOSIS, produce Alex Chilton's 1st solo album, play in the Jim Carroll Band) or was about to do (produce B.B. King, Frank Black, Little Milton, Steve Cropper etc.), Mitchell Cohen took a song my wife and I wrote with Keith Reid (lyricist on all of Procol Harum's work), "River of No Return," and put it on the Jeff Healey Band's debut album SEE THE LIGHT. When it sold over 2 million copies and jump-started my stalled songwriting career, I experienced the Arista Magic first hand without ever having to sign anything over (I kept all my pub). In a business full of goniffs and schnorrers, Mitchell stepped up without asking "What's in it for me?" so at the very least he deserves gratitude and respect. Thank you, Mitchell, from me, my wife, my songwriting partners, and all of the artists I got to work with because of "River of No Return." Best of luck with LOOKING FOR THE MAGIC!

I met Steve Backer in the late 70's while working as the jazz buyer at the Harvard Coop in Cambridge, MA. Steve would always check in for a sales update on his artists and he graciously invited me to participate on a panel hosted by legendary WBUR DJ Tony Cennamo during the Boston Globe Jazz Festival. After leaving the Coop and moving to NYC, I had the opportunity to work closely with Steve in the late 80's when he was head of the RCA jazz division for the Novus and Bluebird labels. Along with the lesser known masters of the avant garde, he championed many new lions of the jazz world that otherwise might never have been recognized. Steve was the epitome of cool, a true record guy who gave his all to the artists he signed and his passion for music was infectious. Thanks for the tip, I'm looking forward to reading the book.

At Capitol-EMI we didn't just load out excess tonnage at year's end. Rather, we dumped it all out there at the end of each quarter.

The practice seemed to intensify in the 1990s. Our ability to clog the retail pipeline was limited, but one-stops and rack jobbers always had warehouse floor space available for rent, so that's where most of the stuff went.

While our loading propensity may have stood out among the majors, we definitely weren't the only ones hiding shopping carts piled high with unsold LPs behind the furnace in retail stockrooms.

Every time I see an Eagles post, I can't help but think…I was 15 years old working at a little rural radio station in southern Indiana. (I'd been hired simply because my Dad owned a local grocery store and they thought if they hired his kid to be a DJ, the father would buy more commercials…)

Given my radio job, the County Fair asked me to introduce the evening's entertainment for a show in front of the grandstand…Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band touring for an album, "Rudy the Fifth." I had heard of Nelson, obviously…and had even heard of the steel guitar player, Tom Brumley, because he played on all of Buck Owens' hits like "Together Again." Now I realize that they were on the vanguard of country rock…

The bass player and I were chatting before the gig…cool guy…he noted that he was from a small town like this one, only in Nebraska. Mentioned he only had a couple more dates with Rick Nelson, then he and some friends were starting their own band.

He said, "So, if you see anything by Eagles…I hope you'll play us on the radio." Randy Meisner…who is often forgotten among Henley, Frey, Walsh…but his soaring vocals established the distinctive sound as much as anyone in the original lineup. His contribution to creating music royalty should never be overlooked.

Hi Bob,

I've been enjoying your emails and podcasts, even when the subject matter is not quite up my alley. You come from a time and a place that connects with me. Our lunch several years ago reaffirmed my initial first impressions. You have strong opinions, eloquently and vividly expressed. Sometimes I agree with you, sometimes I don't, but I am always stimulated. A good thing…..

I'm writing to ask a favor of sorts. I listened to your Felix Cavaliere podcast and I would like to contact him, not just to tell him how much I enjoyed his thoughts and, of course, his music but to remind him of a very significant time in my life. You see, I was on the Dick Clark Caravan Of Stars that you discuss with him early in your podcast!!!! It was my first job in Show Business and I was the main program seller….I went out in the audience during the show and sold programs with photos and bios of the stars. I traveled on the tour bus overnight to the next gig, places like Waycross GA, Eldorado ARK, Wheeling WVA. As Felix mentioned, the Rascals traveled on their own van but I ended up on it a few times. I was always impressed with Felix…..not just his talents but his intellect and maturity. Most of all, he was a gentleman and one time he let me play the maracas when they played an impromptu set in a hotel lobby, as I remember it. I learned a life lesson on that tour that shaped my career: The tour bus would pull into the parking lot of our next motel/Holiday Inn and a cluster of the town's young ladies would gather around the door of the bus, waiting for their heroes to come out. I came out and they asked for my autograph and asked if I was available later. I said that I was only the program seller and the musicians hadn't come off the bus yet. They would say to me that it didn't matter what I did because I was "on the bus".

I resolved then and there that I would have a career in which I was "on the bus". I went into the William Morris mailroom after Wesleyan and started a run of 40 years in the agency business at WMA and CAA and then on to managing and producing…..Lots of fun, lots of memories and always happy to be "on the bus". That tour gave me the taste of what I wanted to do, and I did it.

I'd appreciate it if you would give me his email address or a way to contact him so I could tell him how my brief interaction with him literally influenced my life. He won't remember me but I sure remember him.

I got the new beats to listen to spatial audio and its amazing.

For months i had a reminder to cancel spotify and could never do it. Their personal mixes and suggested listening is so good. They also added an "enhance" feature you could do to your own playlists and the additions are awesome.

Apple music feels more like radio, you pick a genre and that's really all you can do. Spotify still feels like its my music, personally.

Still paying for both, the spatial audio really is amazing. Its like the old days - i hit play and close my eyes and drift away. But its the same as my turntable - its amazing for when and where the situation is right to listen.

Spotify still the go to for every day, working, driving, etc…

Looking at this from three different levels

1,000 ft - I have teenagers and all they care about is what's happening in the digital space. EVERYTHING is documented and posted because if it wasn't captured, it didn't happen. Which means everything is a backdrop for your documented life. Coachella isn't unique but maybe a salient illustration. I don't care about influencers and if you do...and you don't have something to sell...you are wasting your time. Influencers are a scam. Why?

10,000 ft - "influencer" is basically somebody who has an audience you can identify demographically and sell to. Nobody cares about the influencer as a person. Not their audience or the sponsors. What matters is what they are selling. Here's a test: if Jake Paul dies are people going to be sad or riveted? Would his brother capitalize and...wait for it....monetize? Bad luck is gold for this crowd because it gives them content and a storyline. Their poor coachella experience can be turned into inflated outrage and drive impressions.

100,000 ft - this country has turned into a giant shopping mall. I defy you to find anything, anything that hasn't been monetized. The United States is nothing but a giant marketplace. Nobody gives a shit about anybody else, unless they are rich or can make you money. Or both.

In this country money is all that matters. Values are something used against you by the political opposition (can you believe they believe that?) so some guy can get elected, wield power and influence, and control money. For that matter, so is the consumer internet.

The US fixation on taxation is irrelevant. Sure, taxes in Sweden (where I was born) are somewhat higher than the US. But so is disposable income which is a more relevant measurement. Scandinavians have higher disposable income because they do not have to worry about paying for healthcare and education.
That's why many people can use some of their five weeks vacation to travel and see the world. Travel have contributed to the the general public having a much more insightful and balanced view of the world. Few Americans may have visited Scandinavia, but a lot of Scandinavians have visited the US. The views of America in Scandinavia is not only based on hearsay.

I concur with Pam Arnold who replied here…regarding the hypocrisy. Certainly I am aware this is not an earth shattering surprise yet it really is off-putting to be face to face with it in a clinic setting.
The hypocrisy.
The moms, the grandmas, the women seeking abortion care themselves who "don't believe in it".
As a counselor at a clinic, for many years, I saw this often.
We used to say amongst ourselves that we were the clinic of choice for the antis.
Groan, I know.
The only reason anyone was turned away was for hostility, racism, non-compliance.
As far as actions not meeting their stated position on abortion …we put together a plan for decision making and would possibly r/s their appointment for another day, many would leave and return to have an abortion.
In almost 20 years only one family didn't return and we heard later they went to another clinic…after some medical records were shared between providers.

All this to say, the force to not be pregnant when you don't want to be is powerful…
it's such a shame that those who protest and have a public persona of religious opposition don't/won't support and vote for what they DO not what they say.

The privilege, the selfishness…it's exhausting and oh so painful to watch.

They are now successful women. Very proud of them. Not very proud of myself that she didn't feel that she could come to me and say we could be expecting another child. Pressure. We were both working very hard at decent jobs. Why do women have to hide important decisions?..The answer? Men are assholes. Plain and simple.. That was not a deal breaker. I took my disappointment on the chin as stunning as it was. I will never marry again.because i'm not up to the task.. Women should have the right to their own bodies. The injustices they have and still endure is a disgrace to mankind. A smart man walks away from an unworkable situation with a spouse. Ya don't stick around and beat them into submission. That's a coward. It's incredible from a Canadian perspective that a country as progessive as the USA is arguing about something that was decided decades ago for the betterment of society. Very sad.. Keep up the good work pal.

I'm listening to your Dave Robinson interview and it's so great to hear his voice after many years lacking communication.
Story, if I may. It's mid-70s and I'm in London on business, staying at a very nice hotel. Upon waking up one day I felt funky..a touch of the flu is how it felt so I cancelled a couple of appoihtments. At some point there is a knock on the door of my room and it's Dave Robinson. With a bag of bananas. We sat on the bed watching TV, emptying the bag. I felt fine by mid-day.
Great guy.

I enjoyed your interview with Dave Robinson. I thought your readers MIGHT like to hear some other stories about Robbo.

Dave and I worked together at American Recordings in the early 1990's. Dave worked in London, I worked in LA. We had a band, the Jayhawks, that was set to tour Britain. They had brought a woman keyboard player with them and she wanted a Hammond B3 organ for the tour. Dave put in a check request from our partner label and was told that there was a "warehouse full of equipment" that the company owned and to just go over and pick up a B3 for the tour. This was the WRONG thing to say to Dave Robinson.

Dave was given a key to said warehouse. He immediately went to a locksmith and had a copy of the key made. Dave then went over to the warehouse and tried his new key. He then went back to the partner company, returned the original key and said there was nothing in the warehouse that could be used on the tour. Later, that night, he returned with a truck and loaded up a Hammond B3 with Leslie speakers all in Anvil cases. Dave gave to the keyboard player the organ, speakers and cases for the tour and to "take home", a gift from American Recordings. The partner company never missed it.

Some months later American Recordings went through an amazing lawsuit with the partner in London. Dave played a big part in our success in this lawsuit. He was relentless.

The partner label was headed by a CEO that went home every night sharply at 7PM to have dinner with his family. He was rigid about spending dinner time with his family. One rainy night in London, his chauffer driven Jaguar pulled up to the entrance to the company headquarters in Hammersmith to pickup said CEO. When the CEO got into the back right seat, a soaking wet Dave Robinson got into the back left seat. Needless to say, the CEO was more than a little unnerved by this.

The lawsuit was dragging on in court in London. The British legal system is different from the US system. There are barristers, Queens counsels and solicitors. The judges, barristers and Queens counsels still wear the powdered wigs you see in movies. It is OLD SCHOOL and regimented. Your place to stand in the court depends on if you are a barrister or a Queens counsel. The opposing sides refer to each other as "My learned friend" or "My esteemed colleague" while they really mean, "that idiot over there". It is all very interesting.

During the case, the opposing side attempted to introduce into evidence an unauthorized tape recording of a privileged telephone call between American recordings executives and our solicitor. When this happened, the judge, who had been almost comatose for the entire proceedings, sort of woke up from his nap on the bench and suddenly became VERY interested in this tape….who had made it, how it was obtained, was it bought, how much did it cost etc.

"Persons unknown" had made the tape, it was bought for 500 pounds sterling in cash in a plain brown envelope delivered on railroad platform…..almost spy quality stuff!

Needless to say the opposing side realized that they had screwed up BIG TIME by letting anyone even know they had the tape, much less trying to introduce it into evidence. The person at the company responsible for this debacle was a nasty bit of work I will call Mr. X.

Once the lawsuit was resolved, American made a new much bigger, better deal. Dave and I had lingering animosity for Mr. X. We wanted to send him a message. Dave said, leave it with me.

Big TVs were just coming into favor in London. Dave arranged for a MASSIVE TV, the largest available in Great Britain, to be delivered to Mr. X's office. The box had a huge metallic bow on it and balloons. There was a large sign on all 6 sides of the box that said "Thank you Mr. X from your friends at American Recordings". We had the box delivered to Mr. X's office at 11AM so that everyone in the company could see that Mr. X was getting a gift from American Recordings. By 11:05 everyone in the company was talking about Mr. X and him doing a favor for American Recordings.

A couple of years go by, as they tend to do. Dave and I were no longer at American Recordings.

My wife Lori was pregnant with our daughter Mica in 1996, really pregnant. She was, as they say, heavy with child.

Dave calls the house and inquires about Lori….how was she doing, when was her due date, was she having any illness, that sort of thing. After a couple of these questions, Dave gets down to business.

It seems Dave was directing a video for the American punk band, The Descendents. The song was titled "I'm the One". The story line of the video had to do with the members of the band being donors at the local sperm bank. Dave needed a pregnant woman to be in the video. Lori certainly fit the bill!

On the day of the taping Lori and I waited and waited. Finally, late in the day, Dave and the band roared up like madmen in front of the house in 2 vans. Dave was frantic. "Get in. Get in. We are losing the light." The Milos Forman of punk was frantic to get the scene shot before sundown.

Near the end of the video, the Descendents dress like sperm in white suits and skateboard down the streets of Santa Monica.

Years went by and the phone rang and it was Dave. We picked up right where we left off. His kids were grown. His marriage was over. Life.

It seemed that one of his boys was coming to Los Angeles for a wedding and needed a place to stay. DONE! He stayed with us.

Over dinner I told the Jayhawks/Hammond B3 story. Dave's son laughed and said…"That explains it."

It seems that one night Dave returned home from work and it was this son's birthday. Once Dave realized that he had forgotten this important occasion, he apologized, saying he had left his son's gift at the office. Dave left to "retrieve his gift".

45 minutes rolled by and Dave returned home with a Gibson "Les Paul" guitar in a road case complete with band stencils and stickers.

Years later, in my dining room, Dave's son wisely surmised that his father had made another trip to the equipment warehouse under cover of darkness to "retrieve" his son's birthday gift.

The music business was full of characters………but few as colorful as Dave Robinson.
