Re: Character Counts
Hi Bob,
My dad was a Canadian army officer and we spent most of our childhood living overseas. For a while we lived in Pakistan (during the overthrow of Ali Bhutto in 76). While my dad was off dealing with the conflict between the Pakistanis and Indians, my mother, brother and I had to fend for ourselves.
One day walking home from school through the streets of Rawalpindi, a man grabbed my brother (who was 8) and started running off with him. As I threw rocks at the man, mostly hitting my brother, our dog grabbed the man at the calf and wrestled him down. A Pakistani army officer watched what was happening, came by and shot in the head what we learnt later to be a white slave trader. I guess my very young and very blonde cute brother would have fetched a tidy sum.
This is how we explained to my mother who was waiting at home, how my brother got brains and bone fragments on his good school clothes. Of course we then had most of the senior Pakistani police at our house confirming our story to my mother who was convinced we made it up. After she realized that we and the police were telling the truth she quickly told my brother to have a bath.
The next day as we went off to school, my mother simply told me to pay closer attention when we walked home.
Today, my wife won't let our daughter play in the front yard unsupervised.
